I'll start by saying these are a solid set of railings for the price, but they come with a handful of issues. Normally these types of railings are DIY friendly because the big brackets leave room for error at your post cuts, but only if all the stars align. Here are the problems and solutions. #1- These are designed for ~35⁰ stairs. My stairs were 40⁰. This means I had to Dremel both sides of every balluster hole top and bottom. Not a huge problem, just need a lot of patience and a very steady hand. I used a Dremel bit with the same radius as the balusters for best results. Took approx 20 minutes for top and bottom rails per 8' section. #2- You may have to notch your brackets for proper baluster spacing. Using a multi-tool for bulk and Dremel for finish. #3- center run support holes are a 2x2 whereas the balusters are 1x2. The 2x2s sent are only ~10" long. This means if you land right at the top of a riser, it's not long enough. These holes should be the same size as the balusters so you're able to cut an extra baluster to whatever height is needed. I will end up making my own 2x2 material at a custom height to remedy this. #4- When doing a set of stairs with more than one railing in a row, the bottom rail brackets do not sit in plane with each other if set directly on the same marks from a string line. They have a 1" offset. I chose to split the difference and lower the bottom bracket by 1/2" and raise the top bracket by 1/2". #5- They send 1" self tapping screws to secure the railings to the brackets through the top and bottom rails. They also send white caps. The white caps are nearly impossible to put on. I attempted 5 out of 56 before I stopped and chose to simply order some white head stainless screws for these areas. The caps are way too unreliable and I even had one break. #6- After you cut your aluminum top rails, you'll want to round off the sharp points and tape the ends before you attempt to install. Otherwise, you will very likely scratch your post sleeves while you wrestle the top rail into all the baluster holes. #7- Some of the screws may be seemingly impossible to install without putting them at a dramatic angle. I recommend a 6" extension and 6" drywall Phillips bit to screw in as straight as possible. I also recommend pre-drilling ALL holes with a 3/32 drill bit, in spite of the screws being self tappers. It's still aluminum and PVC. Pre-drills reduce the stress on the materials and screws. Some of the plugs may also seem difficult, so make a small block with the stair angle that you can hit the top caps in easier with. #4, #6, #7, are more of just install tips than issues, but worth noting. Overall, they look nice, are solid, and function as intended. ... show more
