  • A good, up to date introduction
Watchmaking hasn't changed much in a long time. Books written 60 years ago or more are still useful to a budding watch maker, and there are many choices among those older books. But there hasn't been much written (that I am aware of) in the last 20 years or so. This brand new book fills in this gap. This book is a very basic book that introduces you to modern tools and materials (oils, etc.) used in watch repair. There is enough useful information to get you going. Combine this with one or more older texts (many available here on Amazon) and you will get an informed perspective on the kinds of problems you need to be able to recognize and repair to be a successful watchmaker. The best thing to do though is read this book, pick up a few inexpensive pocket watches or wrist watches, some basic tools (don't skimp on screwdrivers!) and try your hand at servicing them. The best way to learn this avocation is to actually work on watches. ... show more

  • Learning to fix watches
Fixing watches is something that I have never really considered doing. I have a few watches that no longer work that I just have in my jewelry box as they hold a sentimental value. This book has given me the confidence to at least try to fix the watches. This would be a great hobby if you are like me and have some watches lying around that would need to be fixed. ... show more

  • Looking for a hobby
This book will teach you all about watch repair. You’ll learn about the different parts of watches and how the come together to make the timepieces that have been around for centuries. You’ll learn to repair the classic and the modern watch. A great hobby or even a side job

  • Doesn't live up to its hype
I've been a watch repair hobbyist for several years, having learned a great deal of useful information at the bench of a now-deceased professional watchmaker in my town. That said, I'm always open to new learning experiences and ideas. So, when I saw a recently published book like this, I thought it might be a worthwhile purchase. If you're looking for helpful information about starting a new hobby, don't buy this. It contains no more detailed information than you can find for free on a variety of horological-related websites. The layout of the book is sloppy, the photo placement is poor and often lacking in relevance. A section dealing with watch movement disassembly has no photos at all, and that's an area where good photography would be very helpful, especially for visual learners. Don't ignore the negative reviews. I'll be requesting a refund and probably ordering one of de Carle's books on watch repair. ... show more

  • For the watch lover.
Bought as a gift. My son took up watch repair as a hobby and this book was just the right thing for him.

  • Basic and feels incomplete
I was quite disappointed by this book. I read the whole thing in about an hour. It's as thin as a magazine. A few images had cut off text and gave this book an unprofessional and unrefined look. Almost all images are generic stock images of gears and mechanisms. It was as if a couple of blog posts were turned into a book with little to no editing. The author talks again and again about how mechanical movements are either "manual or automatic" as if he forgot it was already covered a few pages ago. Imagine being told how to service a watch in five sentences or less; that's how I felt after reading this book. Honestly, you will learn much, much more after watching a few YouTube videos on watch repair. If you don't know the difference between a quarts watch and a mechanical watch, then this book might be a good place for you to start. Even then, I'd recommend browsing YouTube for a bit before buying this book. ... show more

  • Not worth the money
Extremely vague and lightweight read, no real in depth knowledge. pretty much everything in this book could be summarized with about 3 google searches and an hour on youtube for free. only really valuable if youre too lazy to go looking for this info yourself.
