The brakes are metal, pushing into rubber tires, which is more effective than my other walker which has plastic wheels and plastic brakes. My wife uses a standard Rollator walker to get around in the house and on visits to local destinations with modern sidewalks and approaches, but the smaller wheels on those walkers make it extremely difficult for some venues. She located this Walk Mate Rollator online and ordered it for use on her upcoming trip out of the country. The weight and size restrictions by airlines for carry-ons were no issue, as this weighed just less than 20 lbs. and folded up quite compactly. We purchased some Velcro straps separately to protect against unintentional foldout once it has been compressed. They worked great! Though there are some reviews that have negative comments regarding the assembly process, after watching a video that was available online, we found it to be quite straight-forward. The various parts fit well with each other, and snapped into place quite effortlessly. There is definitely a sturdier ‘feel’ to this walker than the one she had been using. The wheels are larger and wider, and the frame is built from heavier gauge aluminum (it has a 300 lb. capacity). The terrain encountered on her trip would have been quite a challenge for her other walker, but this Walk Mate handled the cobblestone roads quite well. Versatility to use as a walker or as a transport chair is a key feature that sets this apart from others. The only issue we encountered was a broken foot pedal “assist” that is used to help raise the front of the walker when it is necessary to traverse a curb where there is no curb ramp. We apparently exerted a bit too much force in using this feature on one curb, and the assist broke, but this did not impact her ability to continue to use the Walk Mate for the remainder of the trip. Upon our return, we contacted Walk Mate and explained what had happened. They were very understanding and shipped us replacement parts at no cost. All in all, we feel that the Walk Mate functions as advertised, and the company stands behind it. I'm in rehab & will be discharged soon. I bought this outright & I'm very happy with it. Folds easy, weight is heavy but most are for me, moves like a dream, my 2 therapist call it my Cadillac. My only complaint is the wheels are out to far. I have to make sure I look down. Don't want to trip over them. ... show more

Easy to assemble. Moves good on all terrain, comfortable to sit on. My mom is 82 and uses it for longer walks. Perfect if she wants to take a break in between and sit. Easy changeover to wheelchair. Good buy.

This walker is well built, easy to assemble looks good but, I found it difficult to maneuver in hallways and thru doorways its heavy to lift n, takes to much space in back of my SUV. It would be nice if one can handle it.

    • The instructions are really bad, follow the video to put it together, but once complete, it's good

The instructions are pretty minimal, and at least 3 parts were put on the wrong side. I almost sent it back as impossible to put together, and then found the assembly video. I had to replay parts of it about ten times before I discovered the error (first one was the wheel put on the wrong side, which made it impossible to have the brake wire on the outside of the assembly). Once I inserted the wheels correctly, the handles went in properly. Tried to put the footrest in according to the instructions, again, no. Went back to view the video another 5 times before we figured out the footrest was put in the wrong assembly. Once that was fixed, able to put that together properly. Finally, the cane holder does not go on the bottom frame as in the pictures showing the assembled rollator, but along the upright support (because it doesn't turn, and the "cup" has to be along the upright frame (where the handle bar goes. I will note that this is also how it shows it is assembled in the instructions, but not in the closeup pictures for this item.) Completed, it feels sturdy and the wheels turn well. I have no problem pushing my dad, and showing him all the features. He seems happy with it, and wanted to go for a "ride" immediately. I'll update if it isn't as durable as it seems at first assembly. First impression, though, is that it's just what he needs. It's lightweight, but sturdy. ... show more
