I've got a heavy old 17" monitor attached to the short arm and again a heavy old Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop connected to the long arm. So far it's holding up splendidly, no issues with slipping. No sharp edges, tray surface is smooth but it comes with small stick on rubber pads to reduce sliding, comes with cable clips with slots to hold the wrenches used to adjust it, also comes with extra monitor screws in case you decide to mount 2 monitors instead of use the laptop tray which is normally screwed on to the second VESA mount. The only plastic seems to be the knob to tighten the clamp, 2 cable clips and a thin sleeves between the joints that I'm guessing are there to keep metal on metal contact at a minimum. The top of the clamps are padded to protect the top of your desk, the bottom is not. If you really care about the underside of your desk, add some felt or moleskin to the bottom part - probably won't scratch as none of the metal pieces are sharp, but it's not worth risking if it matters that much to you. Definitely would do it for a glass desk. I have an Ikea desk (FREDDE Gaming desk) with metal poles from floor to top of a shelf that are flat on the wide side and round on the thin side. I've mounted this to sit on the flat side on a horizontal section of it and it's very secure (moves the whole desk like it's 1 piece when I push the main pole back and forth). I don't think I'd go thinner than these metal poles though (about an inch wide and half inch thick). Tried to mount it upside down from the top shelf, but unfortunately it has a metal bar under it that didn't have enough surface to keep it stable. I think it would have worked right-side up on that same bar or if I had wanted to drill a whole in the shelf to use the other method of mounting it. I bought another Wali mount which I'm using as a mouse tray (the one that doesn't have the monitor arm ASN: B07BDQQVN2). Anyway, I mounted it upside down so that the tray was under the desk (the tray can go horizontal when upside down). It's the same clamp and pole and it's solid upside down. I can't see any reason it won't work in the long term. So if you have a shelf or want something under the table, upside down can work. It is risky though, if a monitor arm were to slip on the pole it'd fall right off since there's nothing to stop it when upside down. So be sure to tighten it. ;) ... show more

this is extremely helpful; now i've gotten two of them! i can still get some of my desk space while having my laptop open. laptops take so much desk space and this helps a lot. it doesn't work so well with big monitors, not because of the item itself, but because in order to: give yourself desk space under the laptop, have the laptop screen open, and use the large monitor, your monitor has to be really high up to the point that you're craning your neck. if you (can) sit back in your chair that helps. but it's really high. in order to have my bigger monitor on the left low enough to not hurt my neck, my laptop has to be low enough that it makes the desk space less usable or it has to be higher but closed or mostly closed, in which case i get less screen space. the monitor that's too big is about 31.5 inches diagonal and the monitor that's fine is about 27 inches diagonal. the only actual shortfall of this item is that the laptop platform actually can't be tilted back far enough to make the laptop flat or even tilted backwards; the front is tilted down at about 25 degrees or so to the back. i chose to put my laptop on bottom and monitor on top because, aside from probably not being able to see the laptop screen when it's held above, there would be too many loosely-connected cables hanging so far and yanking on the cables and laptop ports. so i recommend that configuration. ... show more

All in all - I am VERY pleased with this stand. I am not sure spending more money than this would be worth it considering you can get this quality stand for less than 50 dollars. I really wanted to declutter my desk and create more real estate for other objects and that's what I achieved. I read some reviews that mentioned that this is difficult to assemble - it's not. It clamps onto your desk. There's another attachment option where it can be screwed into your desk - comes with instructions on how to do that instead. Then, you slip the arms on, you attach the laptop tray to one arm and the monitor to the other. You tighten everything, and viola. It comes with pretty easy to decipher instructions. Which side you put the laptop tray on is up to you. You don't even have to use the laptop tray, actually. I realized when assembling that I could very well have used this for two monitors if I wanted to. I read some reviews that mentioned it is not sturdy - it is very sturdy. You've got to tighten everything after you put it together or it will not be. The package comes with the tools you need in order to tighten all the moving parts.
