My old scope was a Leopold Vari-X III, 2-8x36mm. I've been using it a long time but the deer are coming out later or when it's overcast and it has been just too dark to see well enough to shoot, or to late. The change to a 50mm objective has been like turning on the lights. I haven't had a chance to try the Fire Dot in the field yet but it's been fun to play with. The 10 power is a small problem. I just got through my first hunting season with this rifle scope. Previously, I had the now-discontinued Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 rifle scope on my hunting rifle, and I also own a Leupold Mark 4 tactical rifle scope. So I have a high opinion of Leupold, but also high expectations. I expected this to be a step-up from the low-end "Rifleman" (now seems to be "Freedom") line, but I was sorely disappointed. There's some distortion still around the edges of the eyebox. The inability to adjust the parallax (like on a low-end scope) means that you can't adjust your focus at higher magnification (but I should have expected this). The magnification adjustment ring is much smoother than on a lower-end option. But not worth the additional money. Also the "locking" button on the elevation adjustment knob doesn't lock on mine, except when the turret is completely bottomed out. In other words, if the elevation isn't cranked all the way to the bottom, the top turret isn't locked, nor is it under a cap/cover. The scope did come with a rubber "bikini-style" cover - so it's nice that it's not completely without protection, right out of the box. And as with all Leupolds, it seems to "drink in" light, and the center of the eyebox is nice and bright. I'm just disappointed because it seems to me to remain true that if you want a truly good scope, you need to spend closer to or more than a grand to get it (especially these days...). So I will be back to saving pennies for my last and final hunting scope. Because this isn't it. ... show more
