I’m impressed with this kit. Good quality, and good value. Includes a lot, considering the cost.

  • The truth about hard and soft rods...
Color: CAMO Size: 1/2 inch
2023-08-09. Fire starter kit by VVAAGG. 1/2" Ferro Rod. 1/2" Magnesium Rod. Paracord handle. 2023-08-20. Review update. VVAAGG did reach out to me the day after my review was posted. They did not ask me to remove my review or solicit me to give a better rating, rather they inquired about specific areas of dissatisfaction. By reaching out to me first, they are displaying excellent customer relations. My original rating was based on the features and performance of the product itself and more specifically whether or not it met my needs. Just because it did not meet my needs, it doesn't mean it won't meet yours. My review was intended to inform and educate through my personal use of the product, and I hope that I was able to accomplish that. Based on this recent series of events from the Seller, I am going to revise my rating for their excellent customer service (after all, the after sales and service is a part of the owner and buyer experience and should definitely be considered.) The product is functional and as described but I am revising my original rating and adding one additional star for the excellent customer service, my new rating is 4 stars. Original review dated 2023-08-09. Every survivalist should own a basic flint and steel fire kit. They're naturally waterproof and most decent ones will be able to start a fire even in the rain. This fire starter kit by VVAAGG contains both a magnesium rod as well as a Ferro rod. Magnesium is easily flammable so if you don't have any kindling (small twigs and branches less than 0.4" or 1cm) using this can greatly help in starting your fire. In terms of the rods themselves, I need to explain the difference between hard and soft rods as they're not exactly intuitive of their meanings. In a nutshell, hard and soft rods are the exact opposite of their names in terms of usage. While both types require firm pressure, if you have to stroke the rod with relatively HARD pressure to get sparks, the rod is SOFT. On the other hand, if you can stroke the rod with relatively SOFT pressure and get sparks, the rod is HARD. With SOFT rods that require lots of pressure, you will need to be more accurate with where you throw your sparks. With HARD rods, the use of less pressure will allow you to place your sparks more easily. Lastly, with soft rods, the sparks burn for about 1/2 second, while with hard rods, they burn even faster. However, the increased number of sparks created by hard rods and the ease of spark placement allow for easier fire starting with hard rods. These rods by VVAAGG require a long, hard stroke along pretty much the full length of the rod to get sparks (i.e. these are SOFT rods). The sparks burn for maybe a half second and fall to the ground which align with them being soft rods. Despite the 10 prong scraper blade, only about 4-6 of them actually make contact when striking and as a result fewer sparks are produced. The 1/2" rods retail for $20, which is high in my opinion, but there is currently a 20% off coupon (at the time of this posting) making them a little more competitive. Unfortunately, these rods are SOFT and require a considerable amount of work and accuracy. Overall, I think I prefer the HARD rods by LMF. These rods produce sparks even when you just strike the bottom edge of the rod. The short distance the sparks need to fly makes it so that accuracy is not even needed and super easy to light kindling. These rods by VVAAGG are functional so I'm still giving it a passing grade. ... show more

  • Nice kit and it can save your life!
Color: CAMO Size: 1/2 inch
Fire starting. It’s been in our DNA since the early cave days. When the wolves who evolved into the household canine glanced into the cave, saw the fire, saw that it was good, then quite clearly give the facial expression, “Well took you long enough to figure that one out!” These days we tend to go with lighters or ready-made matches. And our ‘wolves’ tend to be little beggar fuzz balls who eye the s’mores we are making and impatient wait for us to hurry up even though we keep telling them chocolate is NOT good for dogs. But I digress. Being a former Boy Scout, and taught survival by my parents, the ability to make a fire when you need it is important. Depending on your situation, it can make the difference between how your spouse and children view you, to whether or not you survive through the night. No joke. People these days are just too used to convenience. I’ve actually seen someone at a camp site try to call AAA because they couldn’t figure out how to put their tent up from the included instructions. But survival is serious. And the convenience of being able to start a fire under any condition is important. Flint and steel was the old way. Matches are great but can get wet. Lighters can freeze or run out of fluid. Fancy smancy tools do not keep you and your family alive (or in competition against the neighboring family who are getting their tents and cookout ready). But now we have magnesium bars and steel plates. Why is this important? Because magnesium and steel will spark even when wet. That means if you can keep the rain off of your kindling, your magnesium and steel can save your life, or the lives of your entire family by keeping them warm. This little aluminum kit has everything you need in it for emergencies or a camping trip. It’s get the magnesium, the steel, the kindling (2 x in separate bags - very nice thought on that one) and, this part did make me laugh just a little, color instructions for the people who don’t know what to do with these three items. I do admit I laughed but also sombered up after realizing the company put enough thought and care into providing these. Meaning they know full well that it’s probably a good idea someone has these and were happy to provide full color to help. The short of it is - this kit has everything you need to get a fire going under wet conditions. A fire can keep you warm if you are lost, had an accident, or just doing a camp out with your family. It’s safe enough that if kids grab it it’s okay, and you can easily teach them with the included instructions. That, like Morse code, might save someone’s life one day. And this is a great kit for that day. Pros * Has kindling * Has magnesium bar * Steel plate * Color instructions that are very handy * Helps your family and canine companion look at you lovingly as you stand triumphant watching as smoke rises into the air Cons * Aluminum tin isn’t as watertight as I’d like. I’ll probably be adding a little bit of sealant to mine along just in case This is a nice kit. It can save your life. It can save your family’s lives. You will always find cheap magnesium buys tooted as fire starters out there, but this kit has everything you need for a good price. And trust me, it can make a difference. ... show more

  • Every piece is useful
Color: CAMO Size: 1/2 inch
For a recent trip into the wilderness, we decided to bring this kit to practice our fire-building skills. We had lighters as backup, and we did end up using them, but the little fire starters and blow tube ended up being invaluable. We got rain almost every day for eight days, often torrential, so it was hard to get the firewood to catch. The tin is great for keeping everything together; with all the rain, everything inside was soaked, but it all still functioned properly. This kit will be coming back with us next year, and we’ll very likely pick up a few more of the pine nuggets since they made it much easier to get the flames to grow and catch. ... show more
