  • Fate and karma
All he wanted to fo was to be invisible to those bully, that pick on you because of some reason or other. Other than his father consider him not much of a man and he's barely 13 or 14 year old. But fate or karma, throws it things into his life. His father died in drunken brawl. Which he is glad, he wasn't much of father. Or husband. The other thing is he developing, not a growth spurts. But something else. He is developing breasts, but boys don't develop breasts. So he was checked out, and answer was a bit more complex than a boy developing breasts . The truth is he isn't? ... show more

  • Moving tale of a mother's love.
Karin Bishop is a wonderful writer who writes brilliantly in themes of a mother's love for her child. In this case, a mother's love results in some "vitamins" that include some androgen inhibitors designed to suppress the testosterone. Imagine the shock of everyone when the next blood test shows that the little "boy" is producing as much estrogen as a healthy teen girl! Karin touches lightly on the pain and difficulty experienced by transgender and gender ambiguous boys, including some detached descriptions of the bullying and abuse experienced in school and sports. The most powerful story of course is how David's mother so completely supports Elizabeth as she makes rather sudden adjustments to being a brand new girl. At the same time, there are so many things that David has always done that seemed strange for David, but are perfectly natural for Elizabeth. ... show more

  • A fun read but with reservations
On the whole I enjoy reading Karin Bishop stories. She written many and I have read many too. Unfortunately, as wonderful as they are, they start to hurt as one read’s between the lines. As a transgender individual, I want to love her stories and savor every milestone that the her main characters experience as they get to see life from their changing perspectives. I just don’t think Ms. Bishop cares too much about transgender individuals and that hurts. As far as I remember, most of the books, if not all feature intersex individuals. It seems to me that she doesn’t feel that if you are not born a biological female, the only valid reason to transition is if you were born intersex. In this story, every supporting character repeatedly told the main character, that they were valid because of a misdiagnosis of their genetic sex. In fact, the only transgender character in the story was criticized because deep inside they were a male. I love reading transgender fiction, and Karin Bishop is a great storyteller. I keep telling myself that I shouldn’t read anymore of her books because there message is that transgender individuals are invalid, but I always come back to this toxic relationship. I need to stop! ... show more

  • Another good book from Karen Bishop.
I found this book slow to get into, but once I got started reading I didn't want to put the story down.loved the characters. It would be nice to see a second part to this story as I felt that there is a lot more of Elizabeth's story to be told.

  • In particular there was not complete closure with the Rachel character situation and most of all transition to attending school
The story was very well written, but I felt it ended a little too early. In particular there was not complete closure with the Rachel character situation and most of all transition to attending school in the fall as a teenage girl (the character had an easy out for not attending the last too weeks of school). What I really liked about this book was the love and support the main character had from the mother and best friends. Overall, I did enjoy this book which was the first one from this author that I have read. I plan to read more from this author, but will look in the reviews to indicate that the story is more complete. ... show more

  • A little to short and ended a little abruptly to get five stars!
As with all of Miss Bishop's stories I was drawn into the story by the relationship between the main character and their mother. The dynamic between parent and child is always a plus when reading Karin's stories. The only reason this did not get 5 stars from me is because it was too short, and unlike her other stories she left questions that I wanted answered, Like how was Rachel's situation resolved? Or how did Elizabeth's relationship with Nathan turn out? And was Elizabeth able to get the surgery early because of her genetic abnormality? Even though it left questions I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and as always I recommend all of her stories. ... show more

  • Excellent Bishop
When the physical features of a young boy begin to feminize, lab tests reveal that the root cause is actually a rare chromosomal abnormality and not the "vitamins" he is taking. This novel deals with how this male-born child transforms and how those around him so readily embrace the person "he" was meant to be. Along the way, our sensitive and perceptive young protagonist meets and then helps another tortured soul who has all but given up hope of ever finding or becoming her own true self. ... show more

  • Really enjoyed this story!
This book was really good! It has engaging characters and a bit of fun. Kinda wished for more. Though I also figured more might have come with her 46,XX chromosomes. Maybe like Michelle Elizabeth from The XY Axis.
