(Feb 2025) A Matty Maggiacomo Book Club Selection “Simmering with rage, propulsive and laugh out loud funny, Victorian Psycho speaks profoundly of horror both within and without us.” —Catriona Ward From the acclaimed author of Mrs. March comes the riveting tale of a bloodthirsty governess who learns the true meaning of vengeance. Virginia Feito’s Mrs. March was hailed as “a brilliant debut . . . [by] a writer who keeps pace with the grandees she invokes” (Sarah Ditum, Guardian)—from Daphne Du Maurier and Shirley Jackson to Patricia Highsmith. Now, Feito returns with her “silver-polish sentences and her eerie psychological acumen” (Constance Grady, Vox) to unleash an entirely new antihero on us all. Grim Wolds, England: Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House prepared to play the perfect governess—she’ll dutifully tutor her charges, Drusilla and Andrew, tell them bedtime stories, and only joke about eating children. But long, listless days spent within the estate’s dreary confines come with an intimate knowledge of the perversions and pathetic preoccupations of the Pounds family—Mr. Pounds can’t keep his eyes off Winifred’s chest, and Mrs. Pounds takes a sickly pleasure in punishing Winifred for her husband’s wandering gaze. Compounded with her disdain for the entitled Pounds children, Winifred finds herself struggling at every turn to stifle the violent compulsions of her past. French tutoring and needlework are one way to pass the time, as is admiring the ugly portraits in the gallery . . . and creeping across the moonlit lawns. . . . Patience. Winifred must have patience, for Christmas is coming, and she has very special gifts planned for the dear souls of Ensor House. Brimming with sardonic wit and culminating in a shocking conclusion, Victorian Psycho plunges readers into the chilling mind of an iconic new literary psychopath. Read more

  • Dark and Funny
Format: Kindle
The Pound family gets more than they bargained for when hire Winifred Notty to be their governess. Ms. Notty has quite a Christmas planned for them! Unfortunately, the more she learns and stays with the family, the harder time she has sticking to those plans... This book was a fever dream. Once I started, it was hard to put down this weird and interesting book. Very darkly funny, very gory. It was an interesting juxtaposition with the proper way the book was written versus the content of the novel. I was a bit let down at the ending, truth be told, but it was honestly the most realistic. If you love novels of mad women, this is a great one to pick up! ... show more

  • Fever Dream Drenched in Dark Humor and Hysteria
Format: Kindle
Story:4.75 Stars Narrator: 5 Stars (1 female narrator did Great!) Victorian Psycho — A Fever Dream Drenched in Dark Humor and Hysteria Victorian Psycho is best described as if, Sweeney Todd and Jane Austin had a baby and an acid trip all wrapped in one! I mean that in the best possible way. Winifred Notty takes a job as a governess in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pound and their two children. From the very beginning, the main character Winifred’s internal monologue kills. It's witty, unhinged, and hilariously self-aware in that "am I the problem?—yes, and I'm thriving" kind of way. The way she psychoanalyzes everything around her, including herself, is both disturbingly accurate and laugh-out-loud funny. A perfect balance. Brutal acts are paired with absurd politeness, making the horror oddly hilarious. It’s wicked, witty, and perfect! The men in this book? HA! Imagine an entire cast of characters who think women should “stay quiet” while they explain the science of hysteria in between bouts of erectile dysfunction and fragile egos. Every man in this book is either a pompous fool, a sexual predator, or a walking lecture on why the patriarchy deserves to be dismantled via scalpel. And our girl? Winifred handles them the way one should, with sarcasm, surgical precision, and absolutely no remorse! 💅🏻 She's sharp, cold, and devastatingly clever, silencing smug Victorian men with a single line and leaving them looking like fools. It was AMAZING! Victorian Psycho is Bridgerton for the deranged. It’s American Psycho in a corset. This isn’t just feminist rage, it’s gothic, and absolutely unhinged vengeance. Would I recommend it? Only if you like your novels like your revenge, messy, dark, and soaked in bodily fluids. ... show more

  • Too long
Format: Kindle
This would have worked better as a vignette rather than a novella. Maybe more of a Penny Dreadful or a short story (less than 50 pages). For all the wonderful prose and somewhat in-depth descriptions, it just doesn't hold up. The physicality of the actions taking place are just unrealistic, combined with the unreliable narration, which makes this miss the mark for me on the horror scale. I found myself bored at the end, even with the increasing action and horrific elements. Even the little forays into Winifred's past did not shed light on this present behavior because it made no sense. The only explanations provided were that she may have delusions/hallucinations and she loses time often. The most unreliable of narrators but without rhyme or reason. This had the opportunity to be great, but it just fell into the middle distance of remembering the storyline but being disappointed with the execution. (Pun intended or possible not, keeping in theme with the book.) Was it okay? Yes. Did it always make sense? No, but not in a gripping, thought-provoking way. This book is more quotable than anything else. Full of exacting truthful observations of everyday life that are interesting, but that's about it. I found the storytelling lacking. What's the point of creating all this mayhem if there is no follow-through on any possible ramifications? Where is the suspense of the plot? The threat of being caught before the plan is complete? 2.5 ✨️ ... show more

  • Committing the ol' stabby stab stab on some fellows.
Format: Kindle
This book is a hilarious satire akin to American Psycho. Through the eyes of Winifred Notty, "the perfect Victorian governess," we are voyeurs privy to the going-ons in the vile, privileged household of the Pounds family. The narrator is a psychopath, but you may feel empathy for her, and if not for her, for the young girl Drusilla Pounds who will be raised in a household that does not respect her as a human being with any sort of agency. It would be difficult to exist as a woman in a society more constricting than a corset without losing one's marbles and committing the ol' stabby stab stab on some fellows. I hate to say that I identify with Notty at all--but her obsessive mind and constant doubt of memory and sometimes reality remind me of some symptoms of OCD (the doubting disease). Maybe that's why I like characters like this so much. Perhaps I ought to get my head examined by the phrenologist. Anyway, I shan't entertain this Darkness any longer. Great book. Beautiful prose. Biting wit. ... show more

  • Love the story! Hate the binding!
Format: Hardcover
Reviewing the actual book. When I got to page 9, the binding had already broke, and pages were coming loose. Great story, poor binding.

  • Unhinged, hilarious, and gruesome
Format: Hardcover
3.5 stars Our narrator is definitely a psychopath and this was an unhinged, hilarious, and gruesome read. It was entertaining to follow a governess who is openly annoyed by her child subjects and the people she works for. The book is packed with humor, but as the story unfolds, we learn more about the narrator’s past and the darkness that consumes her. At times, her antics were exhausting, but I was definitely curious to see how it would all play out. There’s also a little twist at the end that I liked. Overall, this was a wildly manic yet engrossing read. ... show more
