Description

In the year 2010, an eccentric Gen-Xer travelled the United States searching for validation and purpose. These are his pages. His search was motivated by the confusion of being a humanitarian trapped within the demanding world of consumerism, excess, and superficiality. Approaching a midlife event and amidst a meaningless existence ripe with dissonance and confusion for the future, he departs the comfort of his chaos in search of a more meaningful connection. With no formal agenda, outside a couple scheduled stops, we follow our antihero Francis Byrne from the grimy depths of a three day music festival in Tennessee on to some choice locales in the United States including Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, PA, a game at Wrigley Field Chicago, a questionable locale in South Dakota, an unlikely stop in Wyoming and Denver, a harrowing escape in The Badlands, and a electrolyte-less excursion into the Grand Canyon where a being from the past may or may not be, among others. Intermingled with the random thoughts and segues of an educated, yet naive traveler, the search for an identifiable conduit that transcends the abstract confusion of the human experience into a tangible understanding with sound and definable parameters ensues. During a time where our body and souls has been consumed with the anxiety of being socially distant, let go and return to a world only a short time ago where the soul was free, where the roads were open and the launching pads to increased awareness and creativity; Where an idea of hope was operationalized every second of our opportunistic lives and yet poorly under appreciated. Karmic Payment Plan is a fun, raunchy, and innocent tale set within the confines of a profound existential understanding. A fun read filled with off color humor, stage-scripted dialogue, and an experiential process that tugs on the thread of a good hearted soul that once pulled, will continue to unravel all emotions until the final page. • 100% Recommend
Format: Paperback
Still currently reading Karmic Payment Plan and so far it’s literally like watching your wildest, weirdest albeit close friend hijack a philosophy class and turn it into a rollercoaster ride while listening to a crustacean band at randomly alternating volumes. It’s disorienting, hilarious, and sneakily profound—like Disney for people who’ve seen too much and still want to believe in magic (or at least decent karma). 100% Recommend! ... show more

  • Gen X manifesto... IN A GOOD WAY
Format: Hardcover
“Karmic Payment Plan” by Shawn Christian Stanton bills itself as a novel but reads more like a memoir, and I mean that in the best possible way. Part Gen X manifesto, the book is a throwback to the late 90’s memoir boom that introduced writers Elizabeth Wurtzel, Dave Eggers, Augusten Burroughs and a few others to the masses. It’s also part road trip novel that pays tribute to Kerouac and a more nuanced Hunter S. Thompson. The book does hit on some genre tropes but without seeming cliché. There’s a deceased parent, a broken marriage, a kid brother and a lot of self-reflection. Stanton, however, pulls it off in a style all his own and shows a strong gift for language and can certainly turn a phrase. This is to say, the writing itself is commendable. And funny. There’s a bit with merchant marines eating cockroaches in a New York City bar and the banter amongst friends arguing about getting a ride to the airport will ring true for anyone who’s ever had to play chauffer at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The banter is authentic and the gentle razzing between grown men that have been friends for decades hits its mark. Aside from the landmark and city descriptions during his travels, Stanton peppers the narrative with some political musings without sounding militant, whiny or self-righteous. And that’s pretty hard to do these days, even as Stanton takes you through his evolution from troublemaker kid to local bartender to PhD scholar. Overall “Karmic Payment Plan” is a memoir / road trip novel that avoids the “look-at-me” pitfalls of the genre while allowing the author the freedom and forum to get a few things off his chest. It’s part love letter, part road trip novel and chockfull of Gen X musings and philosophical considerations. I definitely recommend. ... show more

  • An adventure that will make you evoke memories of your own growing pains.
Format: Paperback
Karmic Payment Plan: In Karmic Payment Plan the author, Shawn Stanton, describes it as a "Manifesto" of a "Gen-X-Er" and it shoots out at you like a 12 gauge shotgun blast. Written in the first person and described as "Fictional Memoirs," my Kindle version was 283 pages with 13 different chapters that read as individual adventures but they all tie in together as one great story. The author holds a doctorate degree in Clinical Social Work and and it is evident in his writing but the book makes for a very enjoyable and easy read. Part Gonzo journalism with hints of George Carlin, Kafka, Freud, Tom Robbins, A Confederacy of Dunces, who else? - this book has it all and then some. Stanton takes you along for a ride in his GT Mustang Supreme on an adventure that will make you laugh, cry, smile, be offended and evoke memories of your own growing pains of childhood, first sexual encounters, divorce, loss of parents and loved ones, self-reflection and finding one's self in the crazy ride we call life while only holding one ticket to admission. As a fellow Generation Xer, I easily related to this book, even if I didn't agree with all of the opinions, but I completely understood his reasoning. From strip clubs to National Parks and landmarks, baseball games, sleezy motels and much more, this book has something for everyone. I felt like I was riding shotgun with the author, jamming to the music not just of our generation but from The Beatles to present, as we indulged in coffee and cigarettes, journeying onward to the next music festival, bar, New York City, Key West, Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, while bargaining with the police not to give us speeding tickets or arrest us for public indecency. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (I downloaded the Kindle version) - there were no issues with the Kindle version as I have experienced in the past with some books. I don't see any other books by Stanton on Amazon, so I have to believe this is his first book but I hope he continues with more adventures so I can say I was there with him from the beginning. ... show more
