I would have appreciated a bit of advice on how and where to place the thing. But it arrived in good nick, on time. It is sturdy. Now my neighbor and I are waiting to see if it entertains the chickens (and us).

Like other reviews mentioned, it's got padding behind the keys. I thought it was there to protect the quality during shipping. I tried to look for instructions on the package to see if I could take it off but there is none. I'll have to get a knife to scrape it off but I don't have the patience to sit there and do that. I think that's why hens aren't interested in it.

Don't bother trying it with a cockatoo. I did that. Our Too enjoyed it as a chew toy and dismantled it within a week. He didn't see any potential in it as a musical instrument. However, it did last an entire week, which is a long time to remain intact around a cockatoo, thus proving its durability. It would likely last for years with chickens, who have much smaller and less powerful beaks.

I got this as a funny present for my granddaughter who was raising chickens. We thought they might be bored, they weren't laying yet. I have to say it took the chickens about 5 minutes to start pecking at it, but I had drawn a black dot with some "legs" on each of the metal pieces of the xylophone. The tones weren't very loud but it was fun watching the chickens jump over each other to get a turn at playing the xylophone. It really worked! It also had a little cuddlebone attached to it and they liked that, too. Was it coincidence that they started laying within a week? No. It's their age...and their rooster. But I've heard that music makes plants grow, so it wasn't Mozart, but it was pretty cool. I'm thinkin' about taking these chickens on the road. I play the Uke, I'm looking for a drummer and a banjo player....

They have no interest in it. Maybe if I worked with them a few hours a day they would but unfortunately my busy schedule doesn't permit it. I wanted happy chickies that weren't bored. It's well made and cute so not a waste in that regard. I recommend it if you have a single pet and have time to teach it. My chickens are very happy and well cared for just not musicly talented lol.
