  • Boots look and feel a little different than they were made years ago. In all still a good boot.
I have a Men’s Sundowner - size 13w.

These boots are SWEET! I owned a pair of Vasque Wasatch hiking boots for the last couple years and after they essentially fell apart from overuse, I had to replace them. Normally I would not be one to order boots online as I know that a perfect fit with backpacking boots is essential. I took a shot with these knowing I could return if needed, but I will not need to. These boots were incredibly comfortable, even before break in. Yet paradoxically, they are very stiff (which I think is a good thing. However, I'm sure some of this stiffness will dissipate after being broken in.) They feel like they will be more than sturdy enough for backpacking. One thing I was worried about was the outsole-- I have always had boots with Vibram soles, and new it would be a gamble with these Vasque made soles. Only time will tell, but after inspecting, they almost seem sturdier than normal Vibram soles. I appreciate the simple design. Vibram likes to make soles with weird patterns/designs. These just have a simple diamond tread. Again, still unsure about durability, but the ruggedness seems to be there. The only (possible) downside so far: I have fairly wide feet and these boots are more narrow than my last pair of Vasques. However, I am confident that the leather will stretch out as the boots are worn in. As stated before, these boots run just a little bit small. If you are on the edge between two sizes (like me,) go with the bigger size. ... show more

  • These Boots Work for Women, too!
I am a female, and I ordered the men's version of this boot b/c I wanted the black color (not available in the women's cut). I normally wear and 8.5-9 W and ordered the 7 in M. It fits great. It is definitely narrow enough to fit a women (much to the complaint of some men, I'm sure). I probably could have worn either the 7 or 7.5, but I went for 7. I put a green Superfoot insole in it, which I highly recommend. The included insole is flat and not good. My 15 year old women's Sundowner's had a much nicer insole (in my opinion). But with the Superfeet and blue laces these are great! I plan to use them as snow boots this winter in Colorado. My previous Sundowners have worked great for that purpose. They are warm (maybe not in -15 weather but in 15-30s), stylish enough to wear around town, slim enough to be easy to walk in, and they have great snow-worthy tread. And they are waterproof. I will hike in them, too, but my main intent was to wear them around town on snowy days. Thanks Vasque! And Amazon (I got a great deal on mine, maybe because not too many men can wear the 7s). Hope these last as long as my brown ones (which I'm still using). ... show more

  • Stiff as a board
Unforgiving boot . Super hard like wearing bricks . A beautiful & well designed boot except for comfort & the fact it would have taken miles before they were broken in & @ the expense of my feet no less . Had to return , sorry .

  • This looks and feels like the old Vasque Sundowners I remember
This is my 3rd pair of Vasque Sundowners, I think I was lucky and didn't get the China made version in the past 2. This looks and feels like the old Vasque Sundowners I remember, although made in Vietnam. Just received and breaking in, so longevity will be determined later. The last pair still look great and wear well, but some red wing sole inserts have rubbed a hole/tear in the goretex liner. Probably need to take a little better care and clean once in a while. Really like the hawthorne look. Maybe Vasque got this right. I did just buy a pair of the china made for my 15 yr old son, they were on sale for $100 at my local red wing store, couldn't pass that up since all the other hiking/backpacking boots are close to that price regardless of manufacturer ... show more

  • These are not the quality of the Italian Sundowners.
I fell in love with the original Italian Sundowners. I could get 2 seasons on each pair with no issues before burning through the soles. They didn't need break in and provided great support. The Chinese versions were an abomination. The stain would come off the boots when you sweat and discolor your songs and I literally had a couple soles break in half. I even had trouble with the stitching. I couldn't get a full season out them despite buying 3 pairs. But this is about the Vietnamese versions. First the good: The soles seems to be of good quality although quite stiff. The stitching is good as is the sole adhesion. I've been hiking with the foot beds that came with them and they seem to be okay although not as good as after market. The boot uppers come together nicely and the lacing hardware is real good. Now the bad: The boot leather is quite stiff in the toe box. This would be so bad except for the ceiling is very low causing my foot to feel bruised after my local hike (5 miles, 2200' gain). I keep hoping they will break in and have hiked them until the sole lugs are a bit rounded. I'm going to try cobbling the toe box open with some car body tools I have. If I can't get it right, I'll probably toss the boots which would be a shame as they are not that far from being decent. They are still quite far, however, from the quality of the original Italian boots. Come on Vasque, Start listening! ... show more

  • Former Owner Of Italian Made model, High Hopes For These
Size: 7 Color: Jet Black
The size 7 were the exact length/size of the women's version in size 8.5. I normally wear 8.5C/D in women's. In the past I had found men's sizes to be one whole size different, not so in this case. These boots are sized to be worn with fairly heavy socks if you are a lady, may be tight for a man needing wide widths. Try them on locally if you have the option. The jury is still out on this version of the Sundowners. I kept these to wear in colder weather, got the ladies size 8C/D to wear with lighter weight socks. I have written a bit more of a review on the women's version that I will update as time goes on, I am not completely sold on this version of the Mighty Sundowner, but I really want them to work out. They have a way to go before I can declare them 5 star. ... show more
