  • Great ligature
Style: Bass Clarinet Pattern: Cap
Great ligature, I actually use it for my bari sax instead (I have a silver sax so I got this instead of gold) so if anyone is wondering it will work with most bari sax mouthpieces. I use it for jazz as it gives me a brighter sound.

  • Great quality ligature
Style: Alto Sax Pattern: Cap
A ligature isn't going to make a huge difference in your playing, but as for ironing out some subtle imperfections, this one does a pretty good job. It has a very smooth feeling while playing and provides some improvements to control. Pair it with a quality mouthpiece and reed and you get a great sound. ... show more

  • Best ligature there is
Style: Alto Sax Pattern: Cap
Amazing ligature. I've played for 30+ years and own many ligatures. This one easily the best!

  • Very nice Ligature with some personal issues
Style: Alto Sax Pattern: Cap
Overall I like this ligature quite a bit. It looks sharp with the gold plating, and the multiple pressure plates allow for experimentation. NOTE: Swapping the pressure plates is very simple if you know the trick, if you don't it can be a real struggle as other reviewers have mentioned. Watch an online video and it's no problem. The only issue I had was rather fundamental. I have an old vintage mouthpiece (Selmer short scroll that came with the vintage sax), and it must be a relatively small diameter for a hard rubber mouthpiece. I have recently been experimenting with synthetic reeds and some of them have thinner shanks than natural cane reeds. I can just barely tighten this ligature sufficiently with some of these reeds, and that is with the lig positioned as far down as possible at the widest end of the mouthpiece. I had been using the default #1 pressure plate; when I tried the other couple plates (horizontal lines and 4-point), they were even looser than the 'vertical lines' plate. So, I am currently looking at other ligs to find something that fits better. Bottom line, a very nice functional ligature that worked great for my cane reeds but is just a bit too large for the combination of my mouthpiece and thinner synthetic reeds. Oh well. ... show more

  • Does not fit V16 ligatures
Style: Bari Sax Pattern: Cap
Solid all around ligature. But be warned that this ligature does not fit V16 mouthpieces (like a B9). Those are thinner profile mouthpieces that require a different version of this literature (Vandoren Saxophone Part LC090P).

  • Incredible Ligature for any Saxophonist!
Style: Alto Sax Pattern: Cap
The Vandoren Optimum Ligature was the best purchase I have ever made. When it arrived at my house I was impressed. The Ligature came, neatly and safely, secured in its box with the ligature inside the plastic cap along with instructions on how to use it. When I played the very first note with the Optimum Ligature I was shocked, I couldn't tell who was playing because the sound that I produced sounded absolutely amazing. I played around with it for a while and was pleased with it, I tried all of the plates and each had its own distinct sound which all sounded absolutely incredible! The quality of not only the ligature but the "feel" of it, 5/5 stars, no joke. Even though it is a little pricey, it is worth every penny! I bought this ligature hoping to improve my sound, tone, and playing in general and that's exactly what it did. This new ligature was what I needed to step-it-up. I am used to playing on a Rovner "Dark" ligature that got me by, but was no where near the quality and ease I get by playing with this Vandoren Ligature. I have been playing the Sax for years and would definitely recommend this ligature to any saxophonist. Again, I am very, very impressed with this purchase and will definitely continue to use this ligature whenever I can! ... show more

  • Solid, versatile, and a good upgrade
Style: Alto Sax Pattern: Cap
This is a classic ligature. It's not magic, but it does what it's supposed to do without excessively coloring the sound or being too gimmicky. Three different plates give options, but the differences are pretty subtle. If nothing else, the single screw mechanism is smooth and much easier to use than many stock double screw options. If you're a student, I'd highly recommend a good ligature and mouthpiece before getting too excited about upgrading to new sax. ... show more

  • in order to produce a good quality tone
Style: Alto Sax Pattern: Cap
Until I bought this ligature, I didn't recognize the considerable impact that a ligature can have on one's tone. I had to work to get used to this ligature, using the intermediate, number 2, pressure plate, in order to produce a good quality tone, but found that, with this practice, I could get a better tone out of most of my reeds than I had achieved with other ligatures. I then discovered that using the number 3 ligature produced a more open tone than the number 2, which was even better for some reeds. I may do more experimenting with the number 1 plate, but so far have found it to produce too constricted a tone. I am ordering a second ligature so that I can keep one with the number 3 plate installed, and one with the number 2 plate installed. Experience has taught me that ligatures can break at awkward moments. This ligature also sports very good workmanship with sturdy materials. The heavy duty, single tightening screw works exceedingly well. ... show more
