  • Great ant farm; feel free to learn from my experience:
I read the instructions carefully, but somehow ended up with too much moisture in my ant farm. The western harvester ants I ordered separately on Amazon came with honey and seeds with instructions to simply put them in the ant farm. It turns out seeds + water = plants 🤦🏼♀️ It wasn’t long before I had plants and mold growing and most of my ants were dying. I ordered another ant farm to start over and transfer the remaining ants. This ant farm comes with a tube for transporting, but the ants will not go through it, they appear to be too large. To transport the ants, I had to pop of the top, insert a long strip of paper towel that they climbed up on, and then I just dropped that into the new habitat. To prevent plant growth you need to thoroughly crush seeds before mixing them in honey and putting them in the ant farm. I also had to come up with a way to give them enough food to survive and remove any remaining food after a day or 2. I cut a long strip of card stock, putting the food at the bottom and putting a little accordion fold at the top so that I can pull it out with tweezers and just put a new piece of card stock and new food in every 2 days, and this is working well. The ants are very healthy at this time, and much more active than they were when I was feeding them less frequently. Overall, I definitely recommend this ant farm and the western harvester ants. It’s actually nice having two of the habitats so that I can transport the ants back-and-forth so they always have a nice clean home. One more important piece of advice: order your ants from Amazon when it is between 32 and 85°F, otherwise they will die in transit. Good luck! ... show more

  • Great
The Uncle Milton Giant Ant Farm is an educational and engaging product that offers a unique opportunity for children and adults alike to observe the fascinating world of ants up close. This type of ant farm has been a classic choice for generations, and the Uncle Milton version certainly has its merits. One of the standout features of the Giant Ant Farm is its size. As the name suggests, it's quite spacious, allowing ants to dig tunnels, create chambers, and establish their own intricate colony within the habitat. This offers an excellent opportunity to witness the natural behaviors of ants as they work together to construct their environment. The included gel substance is a convenient alternative to traditional sand or soil-based ant farms. This clear gel not only provides ants with the necessary nutrients and moisture but also allows for better visibility of their activities. It's interesting to watch as ants tunnel through the gel, creating intricate pathways and chambers. The ant farm provides an educational experience that teaches about ant behavior, biology, and teamwork. Observing the ants as they forage, build tunnels, and care for their young can be both fascinating and informative. It's a great way to spark curiosity and interest in the natural world and the intricate ecosystems that ants create. Additionally, the ant farm comes with a helpful guidebook that offers instructions on setup, care, and insights into ant behavior. This resource can be especially beneficial for educators or parents looking to turn the ant farm into a valuable learning experience. In conclusion, the Uncle Milton Giant Ant Farm is a valuable educational tool that offers an engaging and captivating opportunity to observe ants in action. Its spacious design, gel habitat, and educational guide make it a great choice for anyone interested in learning about the behavior and biology of these tiny creatures. Whether for personal enjoyment or as an educational tool, the Giant Ant Farm can provide hours of observation and discovery. ... show more

  • My students LOVED the ant farm.
I was so excited to share this experience with my students. I had an ant farm when I was a kid. I was a bit sad when the ants arrived because one vial most of the ants were dead and the other one a lot of them were not alive but there was about 13 that were alive. I contacted the company and they told me they would send more once all ants died because we couldn't put a new colony in because they would fight and die. Then when I contacted them I needed a certain number and I didn't have it and so we never got the ants which was disappointing. ... show more

  • Great ant farm!
This ant farm is good quality and very educational. The ants started working right away. Make sure any tape the side caps up so ants don’t push them out. Fast shipping and great product!

  • Fun; however, Don't Do For Christmas or Winter Time Gift
We did a lot of research prior to purchasing a AntFarm and besides using something like AntsCanada and finding a local provider through their forums, this is the best product for a beginner/children. I had one when ibwas a kid from the same company. You will want to also order an 8 to 10 inch tweezers and either a pipette or eye dropper bottle from somewhere to remove food scraps every two to three days to prevent mold and to water the ants. Remember, since Queens cant be shipped, the ants will only live two weeks to two months if you are lucky. It's very fun to watch them dig; however, I would definitely steer a buyer away from buying as a Christmas gift or if you live in cold weather climates during winter. They give you a voucher for free ants but you still pay shipping. It takes three to five weeks to ship. We got an order for approximately 60 ants, once shipped, they shipped on the coldest part of the year with no protective packaging, to that point and the directions state they monitor weather, and it took several days for them to arrive and they sat over the weekend at the post office due to arriving Saturday night in town. I got them out of the mail box immediately after the post lady delivered them Monday afternoon and still was left with only 13 alive ants after the 24 hour waiting period to get accustom to the farm and 4 more dying withing two days. It was a blast picking out 47 dead ants from the farm with the live ones not very happy. The directions say to email them; however, I don't want the same thing to happen now that it's colder and you can't mix ants or they coups fight and kill each other. It has been fun watching the few ants we have tunnel through the sand. ... show more
