This classic ant farm does everything it's supposed to do--allows you to set it up, add ants, and observe their habits. I learned a lot about ants in the week or so I had it up and running. But, there are things you must do correctly and you must have realistic expectations about how long these ants can keep it up in their artificial habitat. It is a very interesting science project for kids from preschool thru elementary. They really enjoy watching the ants. I used it with my kindergarten class and found equally enthusiastic students in grades 2-3. After your farm has run its course, you can sift the sand and put it away for another time. Reuse is easy. You just need a fresh batch of ants. When you first set it up, make sure all the ports are firmly closed and put a bit of masking tape over them, to ensure no escapees. Same for any cracks at the top. I had no escapees by doing this. Also, very important--use big ants. You can get your harvester ants from Uncle Milton with a coupon inside the kit, or try your own local ants. As long as they are too big to get through any air holes or cracks, they will stay inside and dig. The bigger the ants, the bigger and more visible the tunnels. Expect the ants to last about a week. They don't come with a queen, so their ability to keep going will be limited. Not to fear, however. In a week's time, you will have learned plenty about the ants. Since there is no queen, there will be no eggs and no rearing of young for the worker ants to contend with. After you add the ants, the first 48 hours are the most exciting. They are actively building tunnels, and every few hours you will see progress and new tunnels. This kit makes it very easy to observe this. You may see them trying to take food items down into the tunnels if the items are small enough. After they have thoroughly tunneled the ant farm, they stop building new tunnels and spend their time trying to build hills with the loose sand on top. They seem quite determined to reach the top of the ant farm and will rebuild hills over and over if they are knocked down. There will be steady die-off of ants as the days go by. The ants will try to bring the dead up to the top, and will move them around if they don't seem to disappear. If you can reach in through the feeding hole with something and remove the dead, I think it's a good idea. Don't overfeed them or make it too soggy in there, you will only make them sick. It's a great kit and a very suitable science activity for young kids and elementary students. I fully recommend it.

Totally excellent gift it was so awesome watching them like the things that the ants do that you have no idea about was so cool just don't give them anything outside of what it says to because my boyfriend put in some kind of sugary substance in there like candy or I can't remember what it was and I felt like that was the downfall of the ant colony because they all cease to exist pretty much not long after that but it's a great gift and really really good ant farm like I thought it was awesome

Great ant farm! Ordered this last minute because I had purchased too many harvester ants for my sons’ sets that they received for Christmas which contained the blue gel. The ants definitely prefer this sand ant farm (or found it easier to tunnel) and my kids constantly comment about how cool this one looks as compared to their more expensive gel set. Did not come with the ants (but I think has an option to order) but was definitely worth it for the price and size! My kids are always excited to check their progress and comment every day how awesome this farm is. This picture is just after a few days! Would recommend for great family project and observation fun!

The product itself is great. It looks good, is easy to set up, and works well once you get the ants in it. So, 5 stars for the product itself. However, getting the ants from Uncle Milton was a horrible process. We ordered them right away, but it took SIX WEEKS for them to ship. They shipped via USPS with a tracking number. I checked on the tracking number, but it didn't update for two days, so I forgot about it. The package arrived 5 days after shipping, but there was no notice of delivery either from Uncle Milton or USPS. The ants sat in my mailbox for another 5 days until I happened to check the mail again. Needless to say, 90% of the ants were dead. My son was very disappointed after having patiently waited for so long to get the ants. Eight weeks to get the ants is a very, very long time for a 10-year-old boy. So, do not rely on Uncle Milton for your ants. You can order them, but expect a weeks-long delivery process and lots of dead ants (even the 5 days of shipping would have killed a bunch of them). I ordered ants from Amazon with two-day Prime delivery and will get them this Wednesday. Sure, it's an extra expense, but I would have GLADLY paid it to avoid the disaster we had with Uncle Milton.

I ordered this ant farm for my grandsons. My biggest reluctance was whether the ants would come. It was easy to order them and when they arrived most of the ants were dead (disappointing). however…the ant supplier is already sending me more ants. The abnormally high weather temperatures were likely too much for the ants. The ant supplier was very kind and assured me they would like to see my farm to be up and running as much as I do. I’m very pleased with this educational purchase!

Terrible experience. I purchased this product hoping to enjoy it with my grandchildren during their visit from out of state. Unfortunately, I didn't realize at the time of purchase that the live ants are not actually included and must be ordered separately. The product listing gives the impression that everything needed is included, but I later discovered I had to place a separate order and pay additional shipping for the ants. The process of ordering the ants was not user-friendly, and after placing the order, I was told delivery could take anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks. There was no clear communication regarding when the ants would arrive, and I received no updates after ordering. By the time it became apparent that the ants were not arriving anytime soon, the return window for the product had already expired. The most disappointing part is that the ants did not arrive in time for me to enjoy the ant farm with my grandchildren during their visit, which was the entire reason I purchased it in the first place. Uncle Milton needs to improve both its customer service and product advertising. Customers should be clearly informed that the ants must be purchased separately, and there should be a simple, reliable way to track when—or even if—the ants will arrive. Good luck to those who chose to purchase this product.
