I got this bag because I was hoping to get a slightly more structured and laptop-friendly equivalent of the 4oz Osprey ultra light stuff sack, and this was the lightest bag on the market. Anyway, I really wanted to like this bag but the straps are too uncomfortable -- extremely high, stiff, and narrow. Also this is my fault but I should have checked the dimensions -- at 19" it is much longer than a normal daypack -- I wanted to buy this to use as a personal item on a plane but it is too large to be a personal item (although it does smush down a little bit so you might be able to get away with it). ... show more

This is an interesting backpack. It is definitely lightweight. I'd say that it almost has a "disposable" feel to it. My gut says that this material will rip and the backpack won't last too long but I guess only time will tell. The backing feels like thin cardboard (rather than a more padded backing like most backpacks) and so if you are carrying hard, irregularly shaped items, I think it would not feel good against your back. I'm a bit torn about whether to recommend this backpack. If weight is VERY important to you, than I think this may be worth trying out. I don't think it would be suitable for everyday use as a child's school backpack or a work backpack for adults. Therefore, I think it has limited utility. Ultralight is definitely what this is. However, because of that there is no padding and the material is very thin. It might be tough, but I don't think you would want to use this for anything more than the lightest of items and for just day travel. Hiking and such would not be this backpack's claim. The should pads are almost non-existant and the back has almost none as well. I will say that all the seams are very well sealed and the zippers have some good covering, so rain should be no problem with this. I'd say using this for a lightweight laptop bag (MacBook Air or MS Surface) it would probably be just fine, but don't expect it to hold up to rough handling. ... show more

The laptop my son brings to school is heavy enough so this backpack was a good solution to help protect the laptop and my son’s back. The bungee cords in the front give him options to carry a light jacket or sweater when needed. The side pocket holds his wallet and phone securely. I've ordered multiple bags from GBY (their duffle, fanny pack, and this pack) and everything has been great. Out of all of them though, this one is definitely my favorite. The ripstop nylon they use is strong yet light, the bottom is reinforced and the foam throughout provides a fair bit of shock protection, that is at least relative to comparable ultralight bags.
