I’ve used several USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 enclosures, and this UGREEN 20Gbps M.2 NVMe/SATA SSD Enclosure has delivered the best speeds so far. It works great with my ThinkPad X1 laptop. My only complaint is that the enclosure gets quite hot during cloning an SSD. I was concerned that sustained high temperatures might affect the SSD over time, so I decided to add a cooler. A USB Phone Cooler turned out to be a great solution. It brought the SSD temperature down to around 35°C, which gave me much more peace of mind during extended use. I also recommend spending a few extra dollars on a good Thunderbolt cable. I’m using a Thunderbolt 5 Cable that works very well. Fast enclosure + quality cable + active cooling = excellent performance. 🚀

This is now my favorite USB drive. It's priced well, uses a metal screw to secure the drive, comes with a thermal pad that makes good contact with the casing, and the casing is all-metal. One thing to note is the thermal pad instructions say to peel off plastic from both sides. This is straight up wrong. The black side is part of the thermal pad and is there to close the gap between the drive and the metal case. When you leave the black side alone, it makes great contact with the case and temperatures are improved significantly. Also, the cable that comes with it is sub-par as another reviewer noted (thank you for testing). I purchased a ZeroneTeck 6 Inch USB C Cable [2-Pack 0.5FT] kit and this cable works great, getting me to full speed bursting and settles in at around 1.4GB/sec sustained, which is typical of the Gen4 drive I have installed in it, so the drive is the bottleneck, not this enclosure.

edit: The cable that came with it seems to be a slight bottleneck. I purchased a Cable Matters 20Gbps USB-C cable (the one rated for 240 watts of charging) and the results improved quite a bit on the read side. The read speed benchmark is now over 2000MiB/s (see second screenshot) and the real-world data transfer saw the read speeds go up to 1.85 GiB/s average over about 50GiB of data (ignore the bump at the start where cache helped it write at over 2.75 GiB/s). Write speeds stayed the same basically, real world transfers still rock solid around 1.15GiB/s. I paired this enclosure with a Kingston SNV3S500G Gen 4 drive and the speeds were pretty fast. So fast I didn't believe the benchmark and ran it 3 times, twice at 5x4GB and once at 5x16GB with very comparable results. Real world data transfer (source drive capable of over 7GiB/s read/write speeds) saw the max write speed around 1.15GiB/s sustained over the 67GiB of files I was using to test with. Copying the data back the other way averaged transfer speeds of 1.05GiB/s (see edit, faster with different cable). During benchmarking and transferring the peak temperature I saw with CrystalDiskInfo was 40C. Speeds do change with temperature. When testing the read speeds at 24C I saw consistent speeds over 1.8 GiB/s but the same test at 35C saw some dips below 1 GiB/s. A note about the installation, I had trouble with the thermal pad in two ways. First, the instructions say to remove a plastic layer from both sides, but I wasn't able to get the black-colored side to peal off cleanly. It got about 3/4 the way and then broke the rest of the pad off with it (which turned out to be a good thing). With most of the pad on my NVMe drive the drive tray slid very easily into the aluminum housing, basically the pad wasn't contacting the case at all. I used the chunk that broke off and put it in the middle of the rest of the thermal pad, doubling the thickness there. Then I really had to squeeze the drive tray into the aluminum housing, with good contact between the pad and aluminum. The drive feels pretty warm when active so I think there's good contact there now. I plan on using this so I can dual boot linux without having to mess with my main drive. Seems like it should be plenty fast enough.

Does what it says . Good cooling on my 4tb 9100 pro. Samsung magic says wrong serial number so know you can't use this to migrate os without another tool. High speed and well built. Needs thunderbolt 3 or higher for full speed . Perfect weight to stay put. Fit and finish are on point

The written instructions, Step 4, say to remove the protective film, stick the pad on your drive, then peel the protective film off of the other side. There is an accompanying illustration which shows the film peeled back on both sides of the pad. Don't do it. There is a thick, clear plastic on one side that comes off. The other side is dark brown and does not come off. I tried and the pad under the brown layer comes with it. My guess is the instructions are from another device with another type of pad and another style of case closure because sticky side out wouldn't work with this sliding enclosure. Going back to the listing I saw the graphic instructions there and they are okay.

This was an impulse buy on one of those black Friday sales. Not sure I would have ever tried it at full price. But I had a spare 1TB m.2 that was going unused so I bought the enclosure. With the recent insanity with memory and drive prices I am very happy I did. It works great. Not as fast as if the m.2 was actually installed but far faster than flash drives. So far very happy with this device.
