    • Does what it suppose to do, spring in the handle is a joke though.
Overall it aided me very well in stretching a pretty large canvas over a frame so no complaints there. the spring in the handle though is ridiculous, it pops out every chance it gets, and after putting it back in a couple of times after it popped-out again, I just threw it away. Does not really detract from the usefulness of these pliers though. ... show more

I bought this multiple times. It works really well. I make canvases and sell them, this works really well, it tugs the canvas tightly to the wood frame. Highly recommend this.

    • Poorly designed and cheaply made "imitation" of what a canvas stretcher should be.
Poorly designed and cheaply made. The spring mechanism (which is critical for proper function) is terribly made. It fell off with first use. The bends in the spring where the spring ends insert into the stretcher handle are inadequate, causing it to fall apart with the slightest lateral pressure. the "roller" part of the spring gets caught in the trough where the roller spring is meant to travel causing it to jam. Also the "gripper" teeth are not very aggressive, making it harder to hold canvas under tension. This is a cheaply made and carelessly designed Chinese product by TCP. If you really want a reliable stretcher, spend a few $$ more on something better. ... show more

    • Classic example of why to buy good tools
This is an example of why it's often better to spend a little more to get something worthwhile. The problem is that it works good enough to get by but not really all that good. The spring intended to open the pliers is flimsy, and it catches and binds. The small thing designed to make this tool easy to use in fact makes it harder. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more. This was to be a gift but isn't gift worthy. I have a similar pliers that I've had for over 50 years. It has worked flawlessly the whole time. This one will never do so. Skimpflation - to save a penny on the manufacture they used a smaller gauge wire spring and by doing so rendered the tool much less useful. ... show more

I normally buy pre-stretched canvas. However, for the project I am working on right now I needed 48" x 60" canvas, and they run over $200 if you purchase ready made. I don't have a lot of practice in stretching canvas, so I watched some videos on how to do it before starting. These pliers work very well. Make sure you are giving yourself enough canvas slack on the back of canvas to be able to grab the fabric edge while also propping the pliers against the inside edge of your stretcher bars. Also, fold the edge of fabric canvas in half before gripping it with pliers. This will make the edges stronger, prevent tearing, and will give you better results. ... show more
