  • Easy on the eyes!
Color: Multicolor Size: 3.28 x 3.28 FT
Great set of lights with a ton of customization options. I chose to split the two parts over the two windows in my office/gaming area and just use the normal presets for a little extra ambiance. Main thing I noticed and like about these is they aren’t oppressive to look at. They provide the bit of extra light I need without being overwhelming. Would recommend. ... show more

  • Needs more presets
Color: Multicolor Size: 1.64 x 7.87 FT
Most of the premade designs don’t work on this long skinny version. I’m also concerned about energy consumption while the lights are off because the AC adapter stays pretty warm indicating power consumption. No issues with the lights themselves.

im unsure about this. im also thinking it isnt enough leds to create these images. ill give her another go some other time but i think i am over these lights. Itseems like a great product and ive read the others having success, but i just can not get the lights to line up straight and even.

  • An overpriced waste of your time.
Color: Multicolor Size: 3.28 x 3.28 FT
I have quite a few gripes to pick with this Matrix light and the Twinkly app itself as well. I'll start with the Matrix fixture itself: The pictures do not accurately represent just how sloppy and unsightly this thing looks in person. First of all, the strands of lights do not want to stay in position whatsoever. By default they seem set in their ways to want to angle themselves to their sides if not all the way around and no matter how much you try to manipulate each strand into staying facing frontward they won't budge. Second, the strand are more bunched up than not. Even with both ends affixed to the wall these strands do not look anywhere close to being as neat or straight as they do in the listing photos. There are also some lights that seem misaligned because they are way too close to the bar itself to the point where I kept thinking I must have set the bar in the wrong position but I've ultimately concluded it's not me, it's the way these lights are affixed to the bar, which is messily. So yeah, sloppy and unsightly. It also took me much too long to get this thing connected to the Twinkly app. And I'm not a new user to the world of Twinkly either, as I've purchased a handful of their products in the years since discovering them a few years back. So I knew what to expect of the setup. This unit however just didn't want to connect to the app! I ended up having to reset the entire thing (a process detailed in the way back end of the manual by the way) multiple times before it connected. Oh and to begin the app-pairing process you have to select the correct generation of the unit. Sounds simple enough and usually it is just that as Twinkly had always notated the generation on the box of the product itself. Or at least that had been my experience with their products in the past. Unfortunately the generation of The Matrix is not listed anywhere. Not on the box. Not in any of includes pamphlet/instruction manuals. Not anywhere in this listing (as verified using the search function) and not even on their website. Before I get into the issues with the app, I need to circle back to a point I made earlier - my familiarity with Twinkly. As mentioned, I am not new to the Twinkly world and have owned a number of their products on and off. This is important to make note of here because their app was actually the sole reason I stopped using all of the Twinkly products I had previously purchased and essentially gave up on the brand altogether. The app was that bad. Prior to this purchase I last used Twinkly a half a year ago or so. The app at that time and in the year leading up to it saw a few updates yet not one of them ever addressed some of the most annoying issues that plagued it - with a big one being a weird storage bug, which I'll explain later. The Matrix first caught my eye back when I was still actively buying Twinkly products and in the market for a curtain light. As you may already know, the traditional curtain lights can be tedious to hang up and on a bare wall can look rather unsightly. The Matrix being a bar seemed like a visually cleaner albeit expensive alternative. Price aside, it was too short width wise for the area I was trying to cover at the time. Fast forward to present day. I had a new area to cover and while still not as wide as I needed it to be I decided to give the Matrix a shot and with it Twinkly another go. I figured or perhaps hoped that enough time had passed for the issues I had with the app to have been improved. And as bad as the app was back when I last had it I did love many of the effects. So I went into this purchase hoping for the best and if it worked out I would have purchased two of the smaller Matrix lights to fill in the area this didn't cover. Turns out that plan is a non-starter and I won't be purchasing those two smaller Matrix sets on account of the quality issues I detailed earlier in this review and for the app issues I'll be elaborating on now. Despite wanting to give Twinkly another shot and the benefit of the doubt as far as their app was concerned they have yet again failed to deliver... Not only did the Twinkly app not get any better in the time I was away but it also hasn't had a single update since then! So 6 months without an app update. That would be totally fine if the app was good and stable and without complaints but that isn't the case at all. There are complaints! If you look you'll see them documented across popular forums and channels. Many of which pertain to the storage issue I alluded to earlier. The craziest part is someone from Twinkly has responded to those specific complaints on the forum (though not recently) so they are more than aware of the issue and even wilder they are actively responding to the many complaints on the on their AppStore page. So you know people are upset with your app and still haven't made any changes? What's going on?! The storage issue bug is they only allow you to have a very limited number of saved presets before they tell you you've run out of storage. I recall even reading one of their responses to this bug on a forum where they tried to explain it away but none of what they said or their reasonings made sense. It's a bug and it's annoying and for whatever reason they have yet to fix it. And when I say limited number of presets I mean LIMITED. Depending on the intricacy of lighting effect it could very well be 3 before you're told storage is full. If it's more basic effects you'll be lucky to have 5 saved before you get the dreaded storage/memory full message. It's a shame because there are really nice effects but because they don't care about their app it's all wasted and after awhile those effects get stale and boring. There's only so much you can do with the same few options. I can only compare it to Govee, who is not only very on top of keeping their app updated but also has a section within the app for users to share their own effects to the masses which is very smart because there will always be something new there to try out on your light! It keeps things fresh! Twinkly doesn't even have many stock presets to offset the fact that their app is subpar so many ways. Actually, very weirdly the most stock presets they have are in the category of flags whether it be countries or LGBTQ. Take that category away and there's hardly any. But also why was the investment made for effects in the flag category only? Seems weird especially considering these are Twinkly stock presets for all Twinkly products and not just exclusive the Matrix. Seems like there should've been more effort made in creating more generic and universal stock presets. And I'm not saying to do away with the flags by the way, I'm just saying it's a very limited use case category. Similar to how the seasonal presets have a limited time and place for use. And it's only being pointed out because the more universal/generic/everyday space for effects are lacking majorly. So if you were giving elsewhere this wouldn't even be a factor worth mentioning but alas it is. I don't know if it's laziness or if they just pivoted into a market space they had no intention of actually devoting the time and detail to but if you make a product like this and then you specifically market it towards gamers then you should at the very least have enough understanding to know that the gamers who would buy this would be doing so to add ambiance to their gaming space most likely for streaming purposes, and a flag of 'insert country name here' that barely even looks like said flag isn't definitely not the ambiance you think it is. Yet you've invested 1% in providing ambiance worthy presets. Something to note - I don't know if their lack of app updates is indicative of anything to come but I've also noticed that The Matrix and a slew of their other products aren't readily available on their own website anymore. The smaller Matrix on here is not even being sold by Twinkly themselves anymore but a 3rd party . So maybe they are phasing these products out or planning to exit this space altogether once they've sold off their existing stock. I reached out to Twinkly to specifically ask if this product was being discontinued but they gave a vague denial. But I mean how else do you explain their blatant lack of care for customers in the form of abandoning the very app their pricy products literally rely on to function? It's excusable. I hate that I had to waste this much time writing a novel of a review for a product that has already taken up too much of my time but it had to be said. In fact, this review would now be the only review for the Matrix that isn't by a Vine user. So consider that. And for those who don't have the patience to read all this... I don't blame you! In short - don't buy this, and maybe don't buy Twinkly at all until they start caring about their customers and update their app! ... show more

  • Great for green screen video production!
Color: Multicolor Size: 3.28 x 3.28 FT
The media could not be loaded. Been using to throw lights from source on green screen subjects. Bought a second set so I could get 3D coverage. Behind the scenes photos attached. Connecting to mobile app was easy, connected via WiFi to PC, app on PC was easy enough as well (short demo attached).

  • Very cool space/mood lighting with good app
Color: Multicolor Size: 3.28 x 3.28 FT
This is not my first Twinkly product. I got into their string lights for my Christmas tree two Christmases ago, and was really blown away by the concept. Being able to freely place addressable LEDs and then map them with their app to harness those lights into an advanced display is next level compared to regular RGB lights. As far as I am aware this is the major, if not only, product in the consumer space to do this. (I have used Pharos products to do it professionally in a former life). There are shortcomings, and designs are really 2D even when placed on a 3D object, but it's still a very cool capability. So when i saw Twinkly was coming out with a curtain system I was excited. I got the 1M x 1M curtain set. It comes in two halves that attach together (or could be placed apart, within the length of the wires). It actually makes for a sizeable and impressive display. The system is really a carefully placed string of lights woven back and forth between two aluminum rods to place the LEDs carefully aligned with each other. The included clips make it possible to mount the rods so that it can keep all the wires aligned for the best effect. Setup with the Twinkly app is easy - easier than the Christmas tree lights because all the lights are aligned and facing out so they will map correctly. The app is not perfect but it is simple enough to get designs and deploy them to the lights, or draw an image. This is where the Twinkly curtain becomes less than a five star product for me. Including the ability to draw an image or mirror a PC screen, or supplying patterns that look like images on the app implies that they will be recognizeable on the curtain. And they're really not. The density just isn't there at 480 LEDs covering a square meter. That's like 22x22 resolution (though not exactly because of the 45 degree angle to increase density). So they are great for being super mood or space lighting. Simple patterns like stripes or bursts of color come across. But it's just not made for detail, so things like snowflakes or characters just don't translate. I had to remind myself that this is a $200 programmable and controllable area light, not an LED display. The more abstract patterns look amazing. The ability to add the curtains into a set with other Twinkly lights is also very cool, although I don't think I'm going to move the curtain down to the living room to be near the tree at Christmas. It is super cool to set the vibe in the room. It throws a fair amount of light in a dark room or low light, so it's excellent for a gaming area. The screen mirror feature shines here, as you can light the room to match what's on screen - just don't expect to be able to make anything out from it. It IS pricy, though, so it isn't going to be for everyone. This is the kind of thing I would have loved to have in college, but I certainly wouldn't have been able to buy it. But Twinkly is the first mover on advanced controllable lights right now. There are similar things out with controllable bias lights or area lights (I even have this for my main TV driven by a camera), but the actual mapping of the lights, controlling multiple sets into one scene, and then applying custom patterns or even images is really the next level. Lighting any considerable area will require more than one set (especially if you're going for the tall set). This is the primary reason it's four stars from me - I'm kind of justifying it because Twinkly is the only one doing it so they can charge whatever people will pay for it, but personally I feel like it's expensive for what it is. What I am really excited for is to see what Twinkly offers 5 years from now as technology advances. ... show more
