  • Best Value Xbox Controller
Color: White Edition: Recon Controller
The features provided for the cost, even without a discounted priced, are why this controller is the best value for an Xbox controller currently on the market. Pros: Wired for zero input lag 2 textured back buttons (I prefer buttons - not paddles) Lightweight Turtle Beach audio enhancements + mute button built into controller Cons: Type C connection with no locking system at the controller (work around provided later) Don’t let the lightweight frame fool you into thinking this is a cheap controller that is going to be trash like a madcatz. This controller has been phenomenal for 3 years now. My favorite part is the fact that you get Turtle Beach audio enhancements on the controller - something you could only get with TB Elite Headset (not worth the money) or via their Audio Controller ($130 + you can use any headset you like). Big fan of Super Human Hearing in my HyperX Cloud II’s and now I get that premium feature in a $60 controller??? This came out at the perfect time too as the Series X dropped their optical out port, which was a requirement for the $130 TB Audio Controller. The only bad thing I have found so far is of course the type c connection will sometimes disconnect in the middle of gaming, but there is a fix and this will also help you maintain a healthier female type c port on your controller. You must make sure that your wire is coming into your controller from an angle as horizontally even as possible. YOUR CORD SHOULD NOT COME FROM UNDERNEATH YOU BETWEEN YOUR LEGS AND THEN BEND TO GO INTO THE CONTROLLER. The tension on that bend is what wears out the female port, so make sure your cord is generally going straight into your controller when you game and you will be fine. The best way to do a wired controller connection is to have a locking system at the controller port and then have a magnetic quick disconnect on the braided wire just before the USB that goes into your console or whatever power supply you choose. This prevents disconnections and also prevents you from damaging your controller or anything else if you try to walk away with the controller still in your hands. Don’t see any brands using this method though lol ... show more

  • Solid
Ok, a few things to say about this controller and why I purchased it in the first place. I hope this review helps and sorry if it is a bit lengthy. I purchased this specific controller because originally I purchased a PowerA controller with the extra back buttons at my local Wal*Mart. I saw thousands of good reviews and stars on Amazon and so I thought why no. Due to the fact my original Xbox One controller was starting to feels its wear and tare from over the years. Less then 3 months later the left joystick wouldn't go forward and it would jitter. It felt cheaply made, like badly, creaking sounds all the time just from holding it. The power light wouldn't always be on, so I was unsure if I had it plugged in correctly. I kept my receipt and box for warranty and I contacted PowerA for a replacement, which took from time of contact till the arrival, just a day of two weeks. During that time I looked at this Recon controller and wasn't sure because of price was high but then it went down by $15. So heck yeah! Got it in the day after my PowerA replacement arrived. Tried it right away and WOW! Immediate and clear upgrade. 1) The controller doesn't feel cheaply made, it feels really solid. 2) Super Responsive, playing 1st person shooters and Elden Ring games, I had to adjust a bit because it was to accurate. I was over doing it and now I don't need to. 3) Packaging was done right, registered it as well right away. Loved the braided cord and it being USB-C type just makes it so much more better. The Latency is so little, just light speed. 4) Using for headset and trying everything out for the chat part is great, very helpful and love the layout of the buttons at the top instead of having to feel around on the bottom like others. Plus with the D-Pad part of the controller, I love how it isn't just UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT. It has the notches I guess you would say for upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right. It does make a difference, especially in side scrolling games like Street Fight and Mortal Kombat, which I personally do no use the joysticks for. I honestly wish I didn't originally cheap out with the PowerA, but glad that I learned a lesson and I hope this review helps others in decisions like this. I know Turtle Beach is just coming into the lime light of controllers now, but so far so good. I will give an update if something bad happens. ... show more

  • Good Controller but the Cable Connection is very fickle
The controller itself is very solid. I have not had any issues with buttons sticking or stick drift. Depending on the game, the shoulder bumpers can be difficult to reach quickly, but the programmable buttons on the back of the controller solve that easily. The programmable feature works well and is fairly easy to use. My main issue is the USB connection. It jiggles in place and it disconnects with very little movement. If I want to put the controller down during a load screen, it often stops working without fully disconnecting requiring me to unplug the cable, reconnect it and wait several seconds for it to resume working. This can obviously be frustrating in games that cannot be paused like (Elden Ring or Rocket League) and can often result in death or loss. I'm not sure a controller that does not work wirelessly needs a removable USB cable. I would gladly pay a few dollars more for a version of this that is hardwired in permanently. ... show more

  • MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
If you are in first person shooters or play a lot of fighting games and don't have the money for the more expensive elite or pro controllers then this controller for you! It's well built, comfortable and has a lot of great features like programmable paddle buttons that you can set to do moves or button presses that you would normally have to take your tumb off the right stick to press. The sound EQ is incredible! It cleans up the sound and make it clear and precise. The bass hits hard without being overdone. Gun shots and foot steps are clear and feel in 3D. The precise aim mode helps your to get your aiming sensitivity the way you want so your reticle steadier or faster as you are accustomed to. The only short comings that I found with this controller is that it's corded and not Bluetooth and only has two programmable paddle buttons like the more expensive controllers. The cord is long though, about 10ft and if that's not long enough you can always buy a USB extension cord for a cheap price. This is my number 1 controller for now and I don't think another will that it's spot unless Turtle Beach makes a Bluetooth model or add more paddle buttons. ... show more

  • Wouldn’t buy.
I bought two of these in October, so about 6 months ago. One for me, one for my bf. Immediately upon getting them, we notice that on one, when you hit r3 (press in the right joystick) the screen would shoot up like you were aiming the joystick that way (promise I wasn’t, I game on many other controllers never had that happen!) and it would take a second before you could readjust. We deemed that to be the “only in single player/casual games” controller as it could be devastating in any game that required aiming. I figured it was okay, I had gotten them on sale anyway. He would just keep using his old one. My/the second controller worked great. Seemingly. The settings for sound are great, I loved being able to mute and unmute from my controller, and overall it was a good controller so I thought the other was faulty. Let me give you some idea, I game daily, but have for my entire life. A generic Xbox controller lasts me about 18 months give or take before it usually gets a drift or something. About December, 3 months after I get this one, it develops a drift where I’m constantly walking just slightly backwards. Fine whatever it’s not on the aim stick so I’m just like it will be okay. Fast forward to this week, all of the sudden sometimes when I’m walking forward, my character will slow down significantly or even stop walking. I have to fully release the joystick before it will work properly again or press down the joystick. Very annoying. The next day, I’m holding the right trigger and all of the sudden it stops working…. I have to release and press back down to restart what I’m doing. Very very annoying. Both of these issues have persisted intermittently since. I’m throwing out both controllers and will never buy another TB controller. Stick to their headsets. ... show more

  • Your Best Cheap Option for Rear Mounted Buttons
I normally do not buy third party controllers, but after having my second elite controller's bumper stop functioning, I'm done spending over $120 on a defective product. Microsoft needs to put better switches in their bumpers that can withstand regular use. However, I do value the rear buttons which is why I opted for this at a $40 price tag. I have enjoyed the Turtle Beach brand products in the past, so I gave this a try. I was really surprised by this controller. First, the ergos are very close to an original controller. The bumpers are a little bit taller, but otherwise it is a very familiar feel. I do like the stipple on the triggers, bumpers, and rear buttons. The grip on the actual handles are also nice. They offer good grip and are easy to clean. The mapping of the buttons on the back is very easy and straightforward. I use this pad on PC, so I don't plug my headset into the controller, but a big plus if you do are the volume and mic controls right on the controller. The sticks are nice and tight on this, no drift or sloppy feeling to them. The rubber overmould is very similar to a standard Xbox pad. It is a wired only controller. The only critique I really have is I wish they made a little bit of a cradle around the USB-C port to add more rigidity to the connection and deter wobbling of the cord in the port, which can cause damage over time. I go gentle with my stuff, so I don't anticipate any issues, but just something to think about. Otherwise, this is a solid controller with rear mounted buttons that can be mapped for $40, and doesn't feel like you are making any compromises having a cheap controller option. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Might not wanna but if you use a wireless headset
Id give this a 3 1/2 stars outs 5. The controller it’s self is really decent. its feel in your hand Is 99% accurate to how a actual Xbox controller fits in your hand the only slight difference is, it swoops a lil more in at the top of the sides kinda like a ps5 controller just less drastic you can barely notice it. I actually like how the triggers feel and sound compared to a Xbox 1s controller or elite one the d pad also sounds better imo but the dpad is a lil loser/mushy compared to Xbox. the analogy sticks feel and sound amazing tho. Now onto what brought this down from a 5. I bought a wireless turtle beach headset to go with this controller and it was stupid of me. If you want to be able to use the volume buttons, mute, superhuman hiring, edit your mic monitoring or the eq settings on the controller you HAVE to have a wired headset. at first i wasn’t to upset about it till I went to use my audio settings on Xbox to lower the mic monitoring and couldn’t access them because the controller over-rides it meaning it’ll only let you edit the audio from the controller buttons. This was really disappointing because I was so excited to finally get a wireless headset and be able to use the superhuman hearing for cod which I obviously can’t do. I also tried my old turtle beach thats is wired and all the buttons worked but my party could hear a buzz coming from my mic which isn’t there when I use my old controller with sd. I also tried my husbands new wired headset that’s a different brand but it would only pick up every other word that I was saying no matter how high I turned my monitoring up so I think the headphone jack is messed up on the controller I was sent because his headset doesn’t cut out on our other Microsoft brand controllers. Also the “paddle” buttons/ extra buttons are in a bad position for players that hold there controllers tightly on the bottom. The buttons line up perfectly with where the tip of your middle finger touches the controller so if you hold onto it with a lot of pressure you’ll accidentally press the paddles. There’s also no way to really turn the paddles off. Even if you don’t map a button to them the right one will automatically be mapped to your aim button/left trigger which can be a little annoying if your accidentally pressing it while trying to run around the game. If you really like the weight of the actual Microsoft Xbox controllers you may not like this one. Its slightly lighter not crazy light to where It feels empty it’s just light enough to notice. That’s not a big deal for me but I know a few people who really care about that. All in all it’s a decent controller for the price but they really should figure out how to get a wireless headset work with the controller on Xbox especially if it’s the same damn brand Also move the paddles up just a hair or make them tighter to press so less accidentally hits happen. ... show more
