  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Great toner cartridges to avoid Canon’s rip-off pricing
2-1/2 years ago I bought a Canon imageCLASS MF743cdw printer. I don’t do a lot of printing so it was nearly a year before the printer started to complain about low toner. At that point I was in for a major shock learning that a full set of high-capacity toner cartridges from Canon would cost 50% more than I paid for the printer! Immediately started looking for other options. Someone I know recommended TRUE IMAGE cartridges as he had purchased a set for his Canon printer (a different model) and had good luck with them including great support when one of the cartridges was misbehaving. First up, the TRUE IMAGE high-capacity cartridges for my printer (series 055H) cost less than 1/6 of what Canon wanted for name-brand replacements. Another good thing about them is that they come with a logic chip so that the printer can communicate with the cartridges. More about the chip later, but know that it is an essential component. Other brands want you to salvage the chip from your old cartridge and reuse it on the new one, which only works a couple of times before the chip itself dies. Now here is where Canon strikes again. I received the new cartridges but I didn’t want to swap them in until the old ones were thoroughly depleted. That took another 1-1/2 years! Apparently, the Canon cartridges start to report as low when they are less than half used up. Canon makes a great printer in the MF743cdw, but some of the tricks they use are really deplorable. The day finally came to swap out the cartridges. Unfortunately, at this point I did run into an issue with the new ones. One cartridge, cyan, was not recognized at all. Most likely the chip was bad. Further, the magenta cartridge had a slight alignment issue on test prints. It was only a fraction of a millimeter, but you could still tell. What am I to do now? I’ve had these for over 1-1/2 years so my options are limited, right? Wrong! An email to TRUE IMAGE asking for possible fixes resulted in a response the next day asking for more information regarding the messages displayed and a sample of the bad alignment. A day after I sent the requested information I received another email offering to replace both cartridges. One form later, of course there is going to be some paperwork, I had two replacement cartridges on the way which arrived in only a couple of days. The two new cartridges worked great. The design has changed slightly since my original order and the new cartridges appear a bit stronger (as in less flimsy) than the old ones. You can tell the new design by “remove before use” plugs that you take out of the sides. The original design didn’t have these. All four cartridges, two from original order and two replacements, are now working and producing clear printouts. OK, back to the chip. Of course, Canon being Canon, they complain about third party chips. Any time the printer powers on it shows a warning about how bad third party (they call them counterfeit) cartridges are. Once you dismiss that message from the console, it won’t come back until the printer is powered off and on again. The one other thing to be aware of is that Canon won’t report toner low status with third party cartridges. Of course, based on what I wrote above, Canon’s report when toner is low doesn’t mean much so you are not losing anything here. Just do a test page once in a while, using any of the free calibration pages out there, to see when output starts to fade. One other sign may be if the printer spends a lot more time churning between prints. That may indicate that it is having trouble getting enough toner into the right spot for print. Considering the print volume I produce, these cartridges should last me for several years, but hopefully this helps others to diagnose when toner is getting low. In the end, I’m very happy with the product and extremely happy with the support. I definitely recommend TRUE IMAGE for replacement toner cartridges over Canon’s overpriced option. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars They work but I have black blotches on the right side - see UPDATE
Overall these were easy to install. The problem started shortly after installation with the black toner leaving blotches down the right side of the page. The solution is to wipe the excess toner off of the roller and then all is fine for multiple pages. However they do eventually return. I do a low enough volume of printing this isn't a huge problem in practice but it definitely shouldn't be happening. UPDATE: The vendor reached out to me in order to resolve my problem with the blotches and offered several options. I opted for a replacement and just installed it. Upon preparing the new black cartridge I was surprised to see toner on the right side of the roller but wiped it off and installed it. After printing ~20 test pages it appears that the replacement cartridge has resolved the issue I was having with the blotches on the right side of the pages. Based on the above I have upped my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars. Customer service gets 5 stars in this case. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Good, if a bit labor intensive.
Edit 3. Ok, I went back and forth on giving this a 5 star, but I feel like I needed to do another update. This product did require some effort to make functional, but it's not awful after the initial WTF, and once you do it once, the other 3 times were easy. I brought this up to their customer service and they said they added a video so you can see what you need to do beforehand, which is nice touch. Plus, there is potential to save $$$ if you go through a lot of ink like we do. Now, I had my issues with the yellow cartridge. 2x in fact. I don't know if that happened to be a bad batch or whatever, but it was problematic. What did work were the other cartridges, so clearly, I just had some bad luck with the one color. So again, giving a 5 start to a product that didn't work 100% seemed counter intuitive. What really earned it for me was who the customer service folks. The emailed me repeatedly, they followed up after corrections were taken, they offered several options on how to proceed. I truly was impressed. TL;DR - its a lot of work, particularly if your unfamiliar with minor computer maintenance EDIT #2 - after a few dozen prints, the yellow is now bleeding on everything. Great customer service aside, I don't know that I trust the product. EDIT 1** i bumped from 2 to 3 star review because their customer service was very prompt and helpful** When I read that I had to swap a chip, I assumed (my fault for assuming) that it'd be similar to swapping a sim card for a phone. Pop out the old chip, slip it into the new cartridge. All set. When you open the box, you are greeted with 3 tools and a set of directions. One of which is a drill. Yes, a small plastic drill. So I proceed to the first replacement cartridge which happened to be the yellow one. I opend the bag to be greeted by a cloud of yellow powder that settled onto my desk and shirt sleeves. (See photo of the cartridge). Not a good start. I cleaned up the cartridge the best I could but there is yellow residue everywhere, which I'm sure will not be kind to my printer and I should probably not use it, but I'm a glutton for punishment. Now, back to the drill. To remove the old chip, you have to physically break the old cartridge to get the chip to sort or, maybe, possibly pop up and then, ostensibly, use the provided tweezers to remove. The problem is that not only is the chip locked into place by plastic guards, it's glued in place. 2nd photo. You can see how the drill, kind of, pops the chip off of its seating and allows you to remove it. I had to use actual needle nose to remove the chip. The soft plastic pair included does not provide enough grip to extract the glue laden chip from its current housing. Which lead us to the wire-cuttting tool included is to clean and of the glue and/or random plastic shards still attached to the chip. Once free of its prison, and after a plastic and glue sheering session, you then have to cram the thing into the chip housing. it doesn't slide in easily. Maybe I didn't clear off the enough plastic or glue, but I felt like I scraped it down to bare bones, but I couldn't see anymore residue to clean. Long story short, I eventually got the chips switched over (20 minutes instead of the usual 20 second drop in the new cartridge) and everything seems to work after a few test prints, but 2/4 of the cartridges leaked colored powder everywhere and the drill thing eventually snapped so I had to hold it together to get it to function. Too many strikes to try this again. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure to follow directions to get 5-star results
As long as you follow the installation directions to the T, these cartridges will do what it says it will do. Once installed, the color quality is pretty similar to the OEM cartridges. I recommend reading all the details of the product so that you know what is involved and what to expect. Overall, this product is a decent workaround for those who want to save $$$ and not buy the OEM option. ... show more
