  • Quite happy with my purchase. Great for my walking trails.
This arrived pretty much on time, and was very well packaged. Assembly was straight forward, without significant problems. It came filled with oil, so I just added gasoline (hint: outdoor tools prefer alcohol free gas. It's more expensive, but how many gallons do you actually use?). It started up right away. I love electric start. If you have to stop it away from the electric cord, no worries. After just a few minutes running it is REALLY easy to pull start again. It clears the snow nicely, and all controls work as they should. After 15 minutes of operation, the heated handles begin to feel very nicely warm. A very nice touch. Steering is done by pulling a left or right trigger. This disengaged the left or right drive, causing the blower to turn to the left or right. Because it is tracked, and not wheeled, this works less well than you might expect. The easiest thing is to pull and release the trigger in short, 1 second cycles. Then you get a really easy turn (but not as sharp as a wheeled snow blower would be). This is the price you pay for tracks. The tracks are outstanding for off the driveway clearing. I have 2 miles of walking trails on my land and I can't snowshoe or ski, so this gives me a very nice walking trail leaving about 1/2" of snow on the ground (to avoid throwing sticks and rocks). Replacing shear pins is easy to do without tools, wherever the break occurs. No need to drive back to the garage. I am very happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Two Strikes
The unit arrived non functional. Specifically it would not turn. It took two week of high stress phone calls to Northern Tool, Amazon (which were helpful but not stress free), and Troybilt. Northern's service people misinformed me that the blower could not be returned because it had been fueled. No so, if you drain the gas tank and then run it until it stalls. The Troybilt service guy did not know his tillers from his snowblowers and told me to take it to the closest authorized dealer 63 miles away. I did get a repair manual from him and reverse engineered the steering, but I am not into turning a 255 pound things over to fix it AND invalidate the warranty. Eventually FedEx arrived and took it away and I got a refund but no hair dye for my now grayer hair. I ordered the same unit from Home Depot and it arrived 3 days ago. Yesterday I took a test drive. It will not turn! Go's straight fine. Too bad the driveway is not 28 inches wide. The return process took about 5 minutes. ... show more

  • Great snow blower
Very powerful and fast, hand warmers are awesome and the tracks work great! Love this machine! Our driveway is at 30 degree angle, so we need a powerful machine and this snow blower offers everything we need to keep our driveway clear of snow in the winter. I would buy it again! The price was good for what we got, especially compared to other brands. ... show more

  • A Best Buy for a Tracked Snow Thrower
I believe this model Troy-Built unit is the best value in a tracked snowblower. I compared it to other units that cost a lot more. If I had the cash, I would have gotten the Honda but couldn’t justify the extra cost (double). I did not buy this unit at Amazon but rather was purchased direct from the manufacturer. I am in northern Idaho and have an 800-foot gravel driveway, the initial 150 feet of which is on a pretty severe grade (10 to 20%). This is the third winter for this unit. Typical snowstorms here average 2”-6” with an occasional 10”-12” storm. Because of the length and type of my driveway it is easy to imagine that a typical use would last more than 10 times longer than what most folks would need with a typical urban driveway. A great torture test to say the least. Although the unit was not problem free, I have some good things to say about it. OBSERVATIONS: First and foremost, I noticed that it performed well in most conditions. The steep portion of my driveway was the ultimate test and it did well due to the track. A wheeled unit simply would never have worked with my situation. Electric start – be aware that this unit does NOT have a battery and it requires that you plug it into a 120 volt outlet to use the electric start. I feel it is not needed and I never used it. Very easy to start as there is little pull resistance and fires up on the first pull. Overall, steering via the Touch N Turn system worked well. Users must note that this type of tracked steering requires a slippery surface to operate, so trying to get the unit to turn on dry cement is not going to happen (will require some manhandling). I did find the gear ratios to be a bit funky but switching between them was super easy. First gear was just a little too fast to bite through the compressed snow piles (from snowplows). The fastest gear was just right but there was little difference between 3rd thru 5th gears. There are two reverse speeds with very little difference noted between them. I only used the fastest one as I considered the slow one to be useless. This model has a gravel setting on the height adjustment which was the default setting that I used. The height adjustment is lever operated so I could quickly switch to a standard setting when doing my cement walkways. The electric hand warmers (built into the handlebars) were great! They only took 5-10 minutes to get to temperature. Headlight. Most folks who use snowblowers at night know that the typical headlight that comes with the most snowblowers (without a battery) is poor at anything below full throttle. At full throttle it is usable but not great Build quality was a bit mixed. First the good. On several occasions I unintentionally discovered just how well made the general metalwork was on the auger, housing and the rest of the machine. The first time I, “Abused” the machine was when we had a snowstorm cover up some tools and miscellaneous equipment (from a garage addition going on). I had it at full throttle when, “Blam”, a pair of pliers went flying out of the chute! Although the pliers were destroyed a check of the augers and other components showed no damage! A few minutes later a screwdriver followed suit, again with no damage to the unit except for a broken shear pin. Replaced the pin and a few minutes later I’m back at blowing snow. As you can imagine the gravel driveway also provided it’s fair share of oversized rocks that caused broken shear pins over time (but that is what they are designed to do). Now for the negatives, which thankfully are just two. The warranty is for two years which is a plus. In year number three I experienced the main issue which was that the engine would suddenly quit running for no apparent reason. After much troubleshooting the issue was determined to be that the grounding wire to turn off the engine was shorted due to a faulty plastic insulator that vibrated out of its holder (a press/fiction fit). Hopefully they have corrected this issue. The second issue is that the chute control stopped working and required parts replacement. Be aware that most of the components of this unit from Troy-Built are the same as those of several other manufacturers. This does make it easy to readily find parts at a reasonable cost. Bottom line is that for the money it is a good unit, just do not expect Honda performance or reliability from it. ... show more
