Description

Triplicate, is the new three disc studio album from Bob Dylan. The collection features 30 brand-new recordings of classic American tunes and marking the first triple-length set of the artist's illustrious career. With each disc individually titled and presented in a thematically-arranged 10-song sequence, Triplicate showcases Dylan's unique and much-lauded talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader on 30 compositions by some of music's most lauded and influential songwriters. The Jack Frost-produced album is the 38th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since Fallen Angels, which was released in early 2016. For Triplicate, Dylan assembled his touring band in Hollywood's Capitol studios to record hand-chosen songs from an array of American songwriters such as Charles Strouse and Lee Adams ("Once Upon A Time"), Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler ("Stormy Weather"), Harold Hupfield ("As Time Goes By") and Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh ("The Best Is Yet To Come"). The titles of the individual discs are 'Til The Sun Goes Down, Devil Dolls and Comin' Home Late. According to Bob Dylan, "I am finding these great songs to be a tremendous source of inspiration that has led me to one of my most satisfying periods in the studio. I've hit upon new ways to uncover and interpret these songs that are right in line with the best recordings of my own songs, and my band and I really seemed to hit our stride on every level with Triplicate."Dylan's two previous album of classic American songs, 2016's Fallen Angels and 2015's Shadows in the Night, were both worldwide hits and garnered Grammy Award nominations in the category of Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Both albums received worldwide critical acclaim, with Randy Lewis writing of Fallen Angels in The Los Angeles Times, "[Dylan] immediately liberates songs from the big band/big orchestra world from which they emerged, and in which they are most frequently revisited…. [He] reaches to the blues at the core of many of these songs. Thus, they elicit the ache of romantic yearning and loss that often gets subsumed by swelling orchestral forces, background choirs or by singers who are more focused on crafting elegant vocals than finding emotional resonance." The Telegraph's Neil McCormick awarded Shadows in the Night five out of five stars and described the work as "spooky, bittersweet, mesmerizingly moving [with] the best singing from Dylan in 25 years." Jon Pareles wrote of that album in the New York Times, "Mr. Dylan presents yet another changed voice…a subdued, sustained tone….Shadows in the Night maintains its singular mood: lovesick, haunted, suspended between an inconsolable present and all the regrets of the past."Bob Dylan has sold more than 125 million records around the world.

  • Give credit to the Dylan band.
As a huge Bob Dylan fan of course I'm going to love it. The great part about these albums from the American Songbook era, shows how great Dylan's band is. Unlike any artist that has gone into the studio to redo these song (i.e. Rod Stewart), where the band has been chosen for the artist. Dylan has chose his band. Another part I like about these albums too was the songs were not as mainstream in the 40's and 50's so it gives you more of an original feel. I'm a big fan of the Big Band Era, and I think Dylan and His Band have done well with their works from the era. ... show more

The reviews I see so far are like our politics these days--highly polarized. Here's my two cents. Simply put, I absolutely love this album and can't stop listening to it. I was very fond of Shadows in the Night, not so much for Fallen Angels. Triplicate trumps them all. Bob is 100% dedicated to this music. If you have an open mind to Dylan, as in you could appreciate ALL of Bob's phases--folk, plugged-in, born-again, born-again again--then this music will be an epiphany. If you're still hoping for Blonde-on-Blonde (II), you will be disappointed. But if you want a renewed and all-in Bob, this is for you! ... show more

  • One of many career highlights. Best of the Sinatra phase. A classic
Terrific album. Bob has interpreted these songs wonderfully. Triplicate is on another level than Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels. This album is not a sleeper like those 2 could be: the arrangements are livelier and there's even horns introduced on this album. His weathered voice combined with his way to inhabit the words and outstanding arrangements really bring these beautiful classics alive. Highly recommended. One of many career highlights from Dylan. There's also the great limited edition vinyl, as opposed to the standard vinyl that is found on the same page as the CD, which can be found here: Triplicate (Deluxe Limited Edition LP) ... show more

  • Wonder packaging of well sung songs by a Master.
Dylan proves he isn't just a Singer Songwriter. This is the third release of Sinatra standard and his voice isn't Sinatra. But he does a wonderful job in pulling off these songs. The arrangements are great and Dylan's pacing and phrasing are beautifully done. The vinyl packaging of the Deluxe set is perfect. The three records are house in 78rpm book style jacket. It's a great motif for American standards. ... show more

Such a beautiful product. Just to look at, its fantastic. They went all out for the deluxe version. This triple album MUST be the end of Dylan's era of doing standards because I don't know where he will go from here. He hit the nail on the head, perfected what he was working on. I still feel that Shadows In The Night was the masterpiece of the series, but Triplicate is just flawless for creating the mood of the era. ... show more

  • Less is sometimes better, unless you really dig classics I guess!
Decent standards. Bob's voice sounds strong and emotive. To my taste though, more is not always better. 3lps (even though the total run time is not super long) I will not spin all that often. A few good cuts like "The Best is Yet To Come", but for me, the songs on this and the previous two records are a little too saccharine at times and not what I want from Dylan. That being said, if you liked the last two efforts of his, you'll probably love this, since the quality and tone are about the same. ... show more
