Description

Tried & True was first conceived around 1990 when a master cabinet maker in upstate New York became concerned over the amount of toxins that he was exposed to on a daily basis and thought, "How did people create pieces that last hundreds of years in a time when todays solvents and chemicals were unknown?" This question led to years of research centered around Shaker and early American woodworking and finishing, resulting in a line of products based on natural linseed (flax) oil and additives (beeswax, pine resin) that would have been available on an early American frontier with no modern processing. Every Tried & True product is made from 100% renewable ingredients and free from all solvents, has 0 VOCs, no synthetic compounds, no toxic heavy metal drying agents or anything else that could be harmful to humans, pets or planet.

I just received this yesterday. I’d watched a few videos on best finishes for outdoor wood and came to the conclusion that due to UV exposure, all finishes will fail, but oils can easily be reapplied without sanding and scraping old finish off. This was delivered well with no leaks. Today I decided to try it out on my cutting boards, since I discovered that this is food safe. I had to figure out how to open the can, due to 2 metal clips over the lid & edge of the can. Once I popped them off with a small screwdriver, I easily opened the can with a pain can opener. The polymerized linseed oil was easy to apply a thin coat with a shop towel. More directions from you tubers with experience is more detailed & helpful than the basic instructions on the can. Not much smell and was able to safely use it in the house. So after a coat, leaving for 5-10 min & then wiping, I’ve left it to dry/harden overnight. I may experiment with some techniques I saw others do to get a glossy finish with multiple coats & sanding/buffing in between coats. When I was packing up, I experienced a little of what another reviewer here described. The lid doesn’t want to stay shut all the way around, when hammering it back on. It will pop up slightly on the opposite side. I don’t want to take any chances with leaking, so I gently hammered the 2 metal clips back on opposite sides. Hopefully that will keep it shut & keep it from leaking. I appreciate that they put the clips on to prevent the lid from popping off, but it does seem like maybe they should find a new can/lid manufacturer to avoid this altogether. Still waiting to see how the finish holds up on my cutting boards as well as the outdoor bench I plan to use it on. ... show more

Usually I have issues with dust in finish in my one car garage, this went on thin and smooth and didn’t need any extra steps to buff to a nice feeling finish

Food safe and just a little bit does alot. Really beings out the natural beauty of hardwoods. I useit on alot of koa and mahoghany. Thats redwood burl in the picture with 1 coat.
