Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is one of the best JRPG's ever made. It has fun combat, incredible music, a deep story, great visuals, and one of the best casts of any game ever. This game was kind of ignored in 2025 due to Claire Obscure existing, but I can easily put this game above that one. People consider this game niche, and that needs to change as many people are missing out on a true JRPG experience. The story starts off lighthearted and gets deeper as you progress. You play as Estelle Bright and Joshua Bright (adoptive brother). Estelle is a high energy, high motivated individual, while Joshua is quieter and more calculated. They complement each other well and where one lacks, the other picks up the slack. Throughout their journey they encounter the military, crime syndicates, corrupt governments, and secret organizations. It's a blast overall and there is so much to this story that you are always looking forward to what is next. I don't want to spoil anything. The combat is excellent as you can swap between turn-based and action. The action combat is more so you can break the enemy to get an advantage in turn-based combat, but it can be used to just put small enemies out right away. You can equip different gems to get different abilities, for example, water-based gems grant healing abilities while fire is more aggressive. This allows you to build your party how you want, similar to Materia in FF7 but better. You also have character specific abilities that use CP, which you gain by attacking or taking hits. It's a great system that never gets old. Visually this is the best-looking Legend of Hero game to date. It makes the other one which is still ongoing look bad. The anime aesthetic is nailed perfectly, and the environments/towns are gorgeous. Performance is great on both PS5 and PS5 pro with no bugs to report of. The music is top tier and gets stuck in your head easily. Really gives those retro JRPG vibes but more modern and I love it. Over all 10/10 game for me with nothing wrong with it at all. You could argue it's a bit long but man, you get your money's worth for sure.

This is bound to be remembered as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. As a modern remake of the first game in the long running Trails series, this is the perfect starting point if you’ve ever been curious to try it. And if you are already a fan, this is a fantastic remake.

The original game was one of my two favorite video games of old time. First chapter and second chapter. And this remake is a love letter to the original first chapter, so you can imagine how good it is. The game looks like if a fantasy tale comes to life and you get to explore its wonderful and beautiful world. It's amazing. If you love RPGs, this is a must-by.

Having played through all of the Trails series, this remake was incredibly welcome. I think this will appeal to newcomers and introduce the series to a new generation of gamers. 11/10, would recommend for any fan of JRPGs.
