Haynes has always been a good go-to for the automotive DIY guy. They never have great detail but there is usually enough information to help you get the repair done. I just bought this as a backup in case YouTube didn’t have video instruction on what I might need to do. This is also a good source for torque ratings and liquid capacities when in a pinch for exact specifications. Well worth the price. ... show more

I bought a Haynes manual while in college because I could no longer afford to take my ride to the shop. 4 years later and I never take my vehicle in anymore. The Haynes manual gives you the steps and confidence you need to maintain your vehicle by your self. I have saved so much money on labor costs charged by auto shops. I order my own parts and install them on my own. you would not believe me if I told you most shops simply double the cost of the part. This manual will save you thousands of dollars, keep you vehicle in better shape and educate you about vehicle mechanical knowledge. I encourage anyone to buy a haynes for the vehicle they drive.   • Good fall-back guide for the price

I have been doing vehicle repair and maintenance for over 20 years and have used Haynes manuals in most all of the vehicles. In general, Haynes provides decent information about vehicle maintenance on a particular model - but not stellar. The more variation a model has during its production, the less valuable Haynes becomes. This specific manual is a victim of such a reality. To be published across 3 model lines, this manual makes numerous cross-references that are not always accurate. The worst part is that this manual attempts to cover the entire 3rd Generation of 4Runner (the vehicle for which I bought this manual) with minimal acknowledgement of changes throughout the production. Just a couple examples: late production of the 4Runner only have one cable attached to the Throttle Body; have no mechanical cruise control box on the passenger side fender; have the charcoal canister near the fuel tank and not in the engine bay... I could go on, but you get the idea. None of these specifics are noted in the manual - in fact, to read the model you might think you are looking at the wrong engine bay in some circumstances! That's the bad. The good (and the reason it gets 3 stars and not fewer) is that it does give solid info on torque specs and an outline of a general teardown / reassembly of an engine that has minimal changes across various models and years. I kept this manual in the engine bay during my recent work, and was grateful for it when I was performing this task. But I must admit that going online to read about the nuances and watch videos to see the same was critical in my successful work on a 2001 4Runner. If you are well-experienced in working on cars/trucks in general and have access to supplementary details, then this manual is handy. The price is about right given the quality (and sometimes the lack thereof) of info contained within. If you want better information, you will either have to mix in questionable info from forums and youtube or cough up the well-over $100 for a dedicated Factory Service Manual. ... show more
