Description

MANAGE STORMWATER RUNOFF THROUGH SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENTStormwater Design for Sustainable Development presents an integrated approach to controlling stormwater runoff quantity and quality. With a focus on low-impact development, the book describes how to incorporate existing topography and drainage channels, curvilinear street layout, building locations, utilities, and proven best management practices, blending them all into a pleasing whole. The results, as shown by designs and calculations in several appendices, are developments for various land uses that are attractive, safe, affordable, sustainable, and economical to construct and maintain. They allow developers to use 100 percent of the sites for profitable construction, leading to developments that are community assets. This practical guide explains how to determine allowable water depths; develop inflow hydrographs for various components of a development; estimate storage volumes for above, surface, and underground locations; calculate outflow structure hydraulics for numerous types of facilities; and calculate routing curves and hydrograph routing. Real-world examples, calculations, and design plans are contained in this valuable resource.COVERAGE INCLUDES:Low-impact developmentsTriple bottom line (people, planet, profit)Coving and curvilinear streetsPlanningTypes of best management practicesPrecipitationDrainage area estimationTime of concentration estimationDesign stepsAllowable depthsDepth-storage relationshipsInflow hydrographsBasic hydraulicsCulvert hydraulicsRiser structure designHydrograph routingSeveral design examples Read more

  • Five Star Book for Stormwater Practitioners
Dr. Rossmiller’s new book, Stormwater Design for Sustainable Development, is loaded with practical, easy to understand information that will be beneficial to all stormwater practitioners, whether they are involved with the planning, design, construction or operation/maintenance of stormwater facilities. The book provides a good blend of guidance on traditional storm drainage infrastructure such as channels, pipes, and culverts, along with stormwater best management practices (BMPs) with considerable emphasis on sustainable/low impact development practices. What differentiates this book from many others is that it provides practical, “hands on” guidance as to how to design facilities like rain gardens, vegetated swales, and greenroofs, so it can be picked up and used immediately with practical benefit and without the reader having to go to other references. It is no surprise that the material is presented with clarity and simplicity, because Dr. Rossmiller is recognized as one of America’s top continuing engineering education instructors in the field of urban stormwater management. Moreover, Dr. Rossmiller’s career has featured an excellent blend of academia (he was professor at Iowa State University), the private sector (working for consulting engineering companies) and the public sector (with the Los Angeles County Flood Control District and the Iowa DOT plus through performing many assignments for local governments). Through his over 50 years of practice, Dr. Rossmiller has acquired innumerable observations and points of practical advice, and many of these are presented in this excellent reference book. For the stormwater practitioner, this is a five-star book. Jon Jones ... show more

Has very good explanations about the water resources planning and design for urban development. Presents good examples of BMPs, although not everything is explicitly explained to the reader.

  • Current, comprehensive, and pragmatic
The stormwater management specialty has grown rapidly over the past few decades. We've gone from a single purpose-single means approach (get rid of runoff as quickly as possible using pipes and channels) to a comprehensive approach (stormwater is a resource and just one element of a quality urban environment). Ron Rossmiller's book nicely captures, for the practitioner, where stormwater management is right now. More specifically, this book describes and explains how to plan and design the now wide array of best management practices. In addition, the book shows professionals how to integrate stormwater management measures into the urban environment. For added value, many appendices (almost half of the book) provide detailed design examples and related design quidance. Bottom line: If you "do stormwater" you should have Ron Rossmiller's book at your desk. ... show more
