I used this on a couple live edge pine slabs for my dock bar. The stuff looks great & dried quickly for spar varnish. I brushed on 3 coats. It looked great, but a few hours later I notice one area w/brush marks & a couple that had almost a puddle, like it was too much in those areas. It seemed nice & dry so I took some sand paper & sanded those areas. All of those sanded areas sanded well. The product “talc-ed” up while sanding & didn’t load up the sandpaper with sticky fresh paint sometimes does. When paint is dry it dusts/talcs, if it’s not dry enough it’s gummy. This sanded well within 6 hours @ 90 degrees. Anyways, I wanted to apply another coat that evening so I brushed it on. An hour later I checked on it & was pissed to find everywhere I sanded it, the last coat wrinkled. Apparently, sanding the outer surface opened up the inner layer, which wasn’t quite as dry. The application of more varnish confused the inner that wasn’t as cured/dried & attacked it, wrinkling it. So I let it set for 24 hours, & then really sanded all the wrinkled areas with a DA sander w/150G, then 320G on the entire surface. Then I gave up on the brushing method & since I’ve got some nice spray guns from my auto body biz, I sprayed. Apllied more coats of Gleam, waiting a couple hours in between @ 95 degrees. Couldn’t be happier with the results. I don’t know why I tried brushing it. You’ve got so much more control with the gun. You do have to reduce it about 10-20% with xylene, which in California is thought to find, however Klean Strip makes a replacement product called Painters Solvent. It worked great. ... show more

I have a beautiful wooden front door. It gets punished by the Louisiana sun, rain and weather. I have to refinished every couple of years. Big job! After I stained it, I applied a few coats of Totalboat wood sealer (followed instructions). Then applied Totalboat Gleam Spar and it was very easily applied and it has a finch, honey like hue to it. Looks great and water beads up. I plan to wax twice a year to extend it. Very happy with this product. ... show more

Used it for the wood bed on our trailer. Works great easy to apply, good hard finish but not superhard will scratch dragging heavy sharp objects over the surface. Just wish it wasn't so expensive but it is worth the money.

Fast drying allows for multiple coats in minimal time. Smooth and easy to apply. Produced a beautiful finish. Very pleased. We used it on mahogany swim platform and love the results. Hope it lasts a couple years.

Did a 16 cedar plank outdoor 72" long by 30" wide lounge chair for our Arizona sun patio. New cedar, sanded, applied 4 brush coats easily. Shine was superb! Didn't know how long Gleam could last under direct morning sun and temps over 105 in the summer. 3 summers later, wet towel the dust off, still great shine, no discoloration. 5 stars isn't enough, highly recommend this product from Total Boat (used other spar varnish products requiring more work and less satisfaction). ... show more

Use spar varnish a lot. First time with this brand. Goes on nicely and dries fast. Have to be cautious on vertical surfaces to avoid sags. Recommend a good vapor mask as fumes are very strong. Put on a rolltop desk I built and waited a week before bringing it in the house. Still off gassing and have to leave window open in that room. Hopefully it will fully cure soon. Update, odor is gone now. Looks very good. Have had many compliments. ... show more
