  • Best product EVER!!!
I do alot of old toy train restorations and would spend hours trying to remove rust. Evapo-rust changed everything! Whether it's a small part the size of a dime or the size of a bowling ball, simply soak it and let it sit (I usually do 24 hours, but 2 hours works as well). Rinse it off, dry it and it's good as new. I started out with a gallon jug, and since it's reusable, it lasted about 6 months. I just found out you can get up to a 55 gallon drum and will be ordering soon. Safe to use without gloves, nontoxic and easily disposed of, Evapo-rust changed the game. ... show more

  • Works great! Much better than vinegar. No scrubbing and won't eat base metal.
This stuff is brilliant for rusty steel, better than white vinegar. I had bolts and bicycle parts that were basically clean, but pretty well rusted. No caked on grease or dirt, a good layer of rust but not caked up thick. I put them in a plastic container of this stuff. It dissolves the rust into the solution, so no wire brushing needed unless the part is covered in gunk. It takes a while. I did the first screw in an ultrasonic cleaner and they were done in an hour. I put the more complicated parts with deep sockets into a container of this and let it soak for a couple of days, they came out beautiful! Depending on the steel it will either come up clean or have a gray/black conversion coating. Great for screws/tools, the conversion coating helps hold oil to prevent future rusting. It won't eat the base metal. Rusty pliers could sit in this for a month, the rust will dissolve but the pliers won't have any pitting except for what the rust did. I wouldn't use it on my antique rifle, because the color might turn, but it's great for general purpose stuff like tools and hardware. ... show more

  • It is amazing stuff
This stuff is amazing!!! you clean the dirt and grease off of an old part. Submerge the part in the Evapo-Rust in a day or two it comes out rust free. It does not have much smell. In fact i used it in my kitchen and my wife didn't make me move!

  • Make sure you wash out gas tanks before using!
Originally I bought a 3.5 gallon bucket of this stuff to de-rust in the inside of my motorcycle tank. The website says to wash any grease/oil and dirt. off of the parts you're going to soak, but after draining the gas from my tank and letting it sit for a day, I forgot to wash the tank out. I filled the tank with Evapo-rust and let it sit for approximately 24 hours and when I checked it it hadn't done anything. I contacted the manufacturer via their website contact form and received a reply that any amount of gasoline would screw up the Ph and cause evapo-rust not to work properly. So that was around $60 down the drain since it apparently ruins the product. It doesn't mention this in the directions I'd read on the website. This time around I soaked it with dish soap 3 times, rinsing it out 3 or 4 times after each soak. I'll update this review once I see how it works this time. **UPDATE** Ok, so I've had my tank soaking for one week and one day and this stuff is doing the job. It's taking awhile, but one of the reasons I decided to go with this stuff was that it only eats the rust and will not affect the metal. I didn't want to have to babysit my tank through the rust removal processes, so being able to forget about it for a couple of days was ideal for me. I think it probably would have worked faster had I drained the product, rinsed the tank, and replaced the product every day. The instructions tell you you may need to rinse your part and resoak to remove a film that might prevent further penetration into the rust. The instructions indicate that heavy rust might need at least an over night soaking, and while I didn't think mine would be considered "heavy" rust, it certainly wasn't light rust. Now that the rust is pretty much gone, there's pretty decent pitting in the metal in there. I wound up buying another gallon locally (total 3 gallons) because I have no way of telling if all the rust is removed aside from what I can see through the filler hole. I would recommend getting enough of this product that will at least mostly fill your tank to minimize how many different positions you have to leave the tank setting. I really want to find something heavily rusted that I can drop into the solution so I can better see the progress. That and it's a bit of a pain draining it out of the tank, rinsing it out thoroughly, and then pouring the product back in. I also filtered the product through a t-shirt each time I drained it out of the tank to remove the little bits of rust that came out. This stuff definitely does a good job and it's safe to use and won't eat anything but the rust. I wasn't concerned about this because I'm getting a dent fixed and getting it repainted, but it doesn't appear to harm the paint at all. I have spilled this stuff a decent amount though this process and aside from making your hands a little sticky, it's easy to work with. If you're in a hurry this might not be the product for you unless your dealing with really light rust, but if you're like me and want something that you can "set and forget" it will work for you. I waited until winter so I wouldn't have to go without riding my bike for the repairs, so this was a perfect solution for me. ... show more

  • Awesome Stuff
Great stuff. 1g jug has lasted me years. Helped me refurbish everything from old hand plane to 9" bandsaw to screws and bolts. Small amount of rust dissolves fairly quickly. Alot of rust may take a full day or 2. Makes rusted parts look almost like new. Can cause metal to darken depending on the carbon content of metal being soaked. ... show more

  • Works well! Follow instructions and be ready to prevent flash rusting after use
I used this on some old bike chain, chain ring, and other parts. It did a good job of removing rust and loosening the tough bits. Flash rusting can definitely occur after using so be ready to dry and coat the item after it has soaked.

  • Took me 2 years to bite the bullet. I'm convinced and buying a 2nd gallon right now.
I've been working on restoring motorcycles in my spare time for a number of years and watched a lot of youtube videos of folks using MetalRescue, electrolysis, vinegar and then, for some reason, I stumbled upon a video of EvapoRust. I'd never heard of it. I thought maybe it was a knockoff of MetalRescue as it was $10 cheaper for a gallon. I thought it probably wouldn't work as well as the videos I've been watching but found $17 a gallon a little easier to part with. Well let me tell you I've been dipping motorcycle parts in there with the rubber still on them, stickers on them, paint on them, chrome on them. This stuff leaves all that alone and takes the rust right off. Places where the paint has been chipped or flaked off and replaced with rust was right down to bare-a@$ metal. Unbelievable. I've used this gallon multiple times and while it's still working I'm thinking it may be time for a fresh batch. I've used this on a corroded-as-all-get-out battery tray, coil bracket, bolts, screws, headlight shell, side covers, even a seat pan! That's a lot for one gallon to handle and it's still going. I want to do a tank so I think the extra gallon will help with coverage. I don't know if they have a 5 gallon bucket but that might be the way to go. Originally this stuff was sort of a light iced-tea color, it has darkened considerably since, I imagine that's the iron content in the water, it's definitely a darker brownish red at this point. I'm pretty careful to let it sit for a while before I pour it back into the original jug and I let all the grit sit at the bottom to get rinsed down the sink. This stuff has a smell to it that is pretty low-key, non toxic... almost like soap. I find the more I use it the less I look forward to that smell though. Small price to pay. Once the stuff has been removed from the solution I run it under my faucet with hot water. I use a brush or my thumb to brush away the dark residue and I'm left with a nice, even, grey metal color that takes a swipe or two with some 00 steel wool to put a little shine on. I hit it with some matte clear coat and install on the bike. Oh, one other thing. I was really worried about flash rusting. It hasn't been a problem yet and some of my pieces I've left for two days after treatment. I find that if I rinse with REALLY hot water it tends to evaporate rather quickly and there's nothing left on the metal to rust. Granted it's winter and the air is very dry. I may have different luck in the summer but right now I'm loving it. This stuff is amazing. It seems to leave the metal with a rough texture (hence the 00 steel wool) but I think that's because of what the rust has done to the original surface. Like I said, one or two swipes and I actually get it to shine. If you don't want the shine, don't steel wool it. ... show more
