  • Not Japanese Trapdoor Snails
Size: 5 Count
These are not Japanese Trapdoor Snails. They are Chinese Trapdoor Snails and are different. Thankfully the seller refunded my money. I set the snails free in a pond. They don't look great for an aquarium. I'm sure they are fine for a Koi Pond. They should update the description so people know these aren't the green colored Japanese Trapdoor Snails. They are brown Chinese Trapdoor "mud" snails. ... show more

  • Got a lot of Extra, but so many arrived dead/sick
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1)
I ordered these to do a fishless cycle for a new tank. They kept the algae population nicely in check while my bacterial colonies were developing. Pros: 25 snail bag arrived with 45 adult snails and around 50 juveniles. So I definitely got my money's worth. Cons: The snails are not being raised in a healthy environment. - Most were covered in a thick layer of green algae. - Many had damaged shells, some with perforations, chips, cracks, and other serious damage. - Some of the snails had parasitic worms of some kind. They look like hookworms, but not 100%. - Of the original adult population, 4 were dead, 3 were damaged and died as a result. 5 had to be culled because of their parasites. 5 otherwise healthy looking snails died within a week. If I had received 25 as initially ordered, I would have lost 2/3rds of my stock within a few days of purchase. But because I received so many extras, I still very out ahead. Do not purchase these if you intend to use them in an established fishtank. They are not a US indigenous species, so do not purchase these if you intend to use them in a pond or other outdoor setting where they could invade the local population. ... show more

  • They were actually as advertised
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1)
I bought 20 for my Koi pond that was gross a few mths ago. I never saw them again after putting them into the pond. I also didn't really look very hard. The. Other day I finally did. They are all still alive trying to clean and clean and clean. During the day they stay at the bottom, I live in Florida so it's very hot. At night they are on the sides. Some reviewers said that they came sickly, stinky, slimy etc. Mine were Black and Big. They are green now, but seem to be happy about it. The water is Crystal Clear now, Just the sides are green. The rocks on the bottom are at least 60% cleaner, and when I check the water ph occasionally It's perfect. Somehow there is a Crawdad or Crawfish in there. I think it must have been with the snails. Extra Bonuus Cleaner:) YaY Bottom line. If your reading these reviews, then you need help for your pond. These will do the trick, for sure, and with no chemicals. Also the Lilly pad is happier, and Blooms constantly. ... show more

  • Arrived healthy?
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1)
I'm not sure about the health of these snails. Several arrived with large holes (pic. w/red circle) and deep cracks in their shells. There are a few that look like they have been bitten on the foot. Many are oozing some kind of slimy string looking stuff (2nd and 3rd pics) I have only had Mystery snails, bladder snails and Black Japanese Trapdoor snails to this point so I don't know if this is normal. The smell is unbearable. There are no dead ones so I'm not sure where the smell is coming from. Maybe the pond muck they were in? I'm not even sure if I received what I ordered. I had Japanese trapdoor snails a few years ago and these are totally different. They are much larger than the ones I use to have and the shell is completely different. I bought 25 and received maybe 29 + 2 babies on 6/21/19. By 6/23/19 I had 29 adults and 19 babies! I wish now I had ordered less not knowing I wasn't going to get what I thought I was getting. All in all, I am very pleased with my snails and the speed of getting them. I'm just concerned for them. They aren't eating and are barely moving around in their quarantine tank. ... show more

  • Satisfied customer
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1)
My snails arrived timely and well packaged. All were large or very large except for the several extras that were included at no charge, and even those were of good size. All were alive and seemingly healthy and are now happily living in my pond. Regarding another reviewer's comment about being able to obtain these snails from your local pond for free, I'd recommend being careful with that, as there are similar-appearing snails that have undesirable traits not shared by Japanese trapdoor snails, such as eating plants and multiplying quickly. ... show more

  • Hard Working Snails
Size: 50 Count
Well packed and shipped all arrived safely and alive within 2 days packed in a plastic bag with the snails and water, inside another plastic bag with a cold pack, and in a styrofoam cooler. When I checked on the snails the next day they had moved to all areas of my pond happily doing their job eating the algae. Great service and fast response contacting customer service. This is my second purchase from Toledo Goldfish and they will be my pond go-to provider for my pond because of their quality and service. ... show more

  • Robust Snails Upon Arrival
Size: 5 Count
I just placed an order for a second batch of snails, based on the robust nature of the first five. The snails live in our 100-gal horse trough with some red minnows (mosquito control), and everything I can use for algae wouldn't be great for the fish. I can't say as the snails have made much of a dent yet, either, but they're severely understaffed for the job! In any event they're adorable and arrived healthy long enough ago (a couple weeks?) that I'm convinced they'll stay that way. Do note that the guarantee expires 2 hours after delivery is made--that took me by surprise, and I would have been SOL had the snails been dead, since I brought them inside on a busy day and let them sit in a cool spot for an hour, which ran me over the 2-hour window. ... show more

  • Nice snails!
Size: 5 Count
I ordered 5 snails and received 9. Arrived quickly. Packing was excellent. Snails are bigger than I expected. Within 15 minutes all 9 were happily scooting around the quarantine tank, munching algae. Yes, they do stink...the smell is one I distinctly remember from mucking around in ponds and mud holes looking for "treasures" when I was a kid! I would imagine that some time in a nice quarantine tank will cut down on or eliminate the mud smell. update: after 12 hours in clean water snails have NO SMELL at all. All at work stripping algae from tank. ... show more
