Truly a Bargain

Right off the bat you need to know you may not get a new (as in never sold or worn) watch. This model from the Timex T2N collection has been out of production for several years and apparently Timex in the Netherlands has a number of the watches available. This was the second watch I bought from Amazon. The first one shipped from the UK proved to have a faulty compass motor. It was returned to the UK (on Amazon’s dime, of course.) The second watch—the one this review covers-- came from Amazon USA and has been a delight to own in spite of it, too, being very lightly used. First, it was missing the plastic guard under the crown which prevents the watch from running and wearing down the battery. Second, the strap shows signs of being used. Lastly, the box was not original to the watch. However, unlike my first purchase, this one came with tags and instructions and aside from the strap showing slight use, looks brand new. It was also $1.50 cheaper and I note Amazon has reduced the price again by half a buck from what I paid for mine. At under $80 this watch is a STEAL! Just look at the prices here for the same watch but with a different colored dial and strap. If this type of watch appeals to you with its many complications--in the watch world, the term “complication” refers to any function that does something other than basic timekeeping—this is one you should consider. While on the large side, it is comfortable to wear. The leather watch strap is well made and very durable but if you want to change it, Aliexpress is the place to go with prices 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the identical item on eBay. NOTE: my intent is not to be a shill for Aliexpress who clearly want to be known as the Amazon of Asia----they are not---but if you are willing to risk $10 for an item that is $30 on eBay, consider them. I also recommend spending $5.00 for Amazon's buyer protection plan which gives you a total of four years coverage. Over the years I've filed several claims with Allstate (who administers Amazon's plan) and have zero complaints. The Pros: + Very handsome looking + Beautiful, super comfy brushed leather wristband + Accurate watch mechanics + Lumenescent hands and dial + Temperature taking + Water resistant watch and band + Great customer service + Four year extended warrenty for $5 US with one phone call to live agent + Large selection of interchangable bands + Has highEST tide indicator hand The Cons: - Time difficult to read - Most of face dedicated to temp scales - No hour numbers nor numerals on face - Poor instructions - Poor compass - Face printing not accurate - No alarm - No moon phase - No hour chime GENERAL This Intelligent Quartz compass watch comes in dozens of different configurations and features, depending on the model and year. My watch is the T2N721 Tide-Compass-Temp watch. It has a cream (aka natural) colored face, and a brown brushed leather wristband. It is a large watch, very handsome looking. Interestingly, Timex has sort of hide the name Timex in small font under the top bezel. Anyone looking at the watch being worn will not see that it is a Timex. They will just notice a very attractive looking time piece. OBSERVATIONS The brown brushed leather wristband is actually one of the nicest features of this watch. Beautiful medium brown band, almost suede-like, super comfy and durable. Rugged clasp. The hands of the watch are the same color as the face, making time reading somewhat difficult. Especially with three other hands to sort out. ( Second hand, red indicator hand (aka fourth hand), and highest tide hand). On the positive side, the hands and dial are very lumenescent, watch is very easy to read in darkness. Go easy using the Indigo light-it is very bright and will drain a battery with regular use. Mostly this is a temperature taking watch. Two temperature scales, Celcius and Farenhiet, take up a large portion of the watch face. To the extent that there is no room for hour numbers or numerals. Instead, there are small black squares where to indicate the hourly positions. Actually they are not small black "squares", but look like small black trash cans or waste baskets to me. Great for seeing how much time you are wasting at work. And if you are bored, you can always take an ambient room temperature reading. I would of much prefered to have a moon phase indicator than a temperature feature. Temps are everywhere: on our cell phones, on TV, the radio, and on our little thermometers. Moon phase is not as ubiquitious as temp, and also ismuch more usefull. Plus, this watch would really look awesome with a nice moon phase indicator. The printing of the watch face is poor. If this watch was made in Switzerland or Japan, all the minute marks would be equi-distant and aligned. But this watch is made in the Phillippines, so we cant expect such attention to detail. The hours 'till high tide and low tide numbers are not aligned with the waste baskets, niether. There is a silver hand that most people dont know the function of. Timex makes no mentio of it in the directions. Most people think that the function of the silver hand is to make the watch look cool. But it actually has several different functions. This is the "highest" tide indicator. When setting the high tide hand, when the circle in the silver hand perfectly frames the chrome date bezel, this indicates highest tide. Also useful for reading highest tide. The compass is a disappointment. Accurate to only + or - 45 degrees. It will give general direction bearing, and often this is all you need. But never depend soley on the watch compass. Make sure you have a real compass on hand as well. (Cell phone compass app should suffice). The compass is difficult to calibrate. You should be at least 250 yards away from any motor vehicles or iron fences. The directions for calibrating the compass do not remind you that you need to "set" the red indicator hand (aka fourth hand) first, before you even think about calibrating the compass. Failure to first set the indicator hand first (like I did) makes compass readings be way way off. The date can be tricky to set also. Here again, the instructions are poorly written. My date was a day off every day, even though I followed the directions and reset the date every day. Anyone experiencing this problem should disregard the date setting instructions. Pull the crown all the way out, (not half way out as per the directions), and advance the watch hands 12 hours. Push crown all the way in when done. SUMMARY This watch has been in production by Timex for several years now. This model seems to be being discontinued. It is very hard to find new ones in the box available anywhere at any price now. This particular model, with the cream colored face and brown leather strap is fast becoming a collectors piece, largely due to its beauty. I predict that by Christmas, 2014, you will no be able to find this watch new in the box for sale except for the occasional one on ebay. Expect to pay around $200 US if you find a new one for sale. I feel lucky to have been able to find a new one for sale. I live on the coast, and I am a boater. The tide, and highest tide feature is very nice and very accurate. Great watch!

Like this watch a lot! Fit and function are great! I had 3 requirements for a watch. 1) Indiglo. I hate the wimpy little light you get if there is no Indiglo and luminous hands are not always enough. I must have gotten a 2nd gen because the Indiglo on mine is bright and illuminates a large enough area that it works fantastically. Even in the dim light but not full dark that makes it hard for me to see things like that. Having said that, the luminous paint on the watch hands is bright and lasts a long time on this watch! 2) Analog. I feel like a digital watch is something I wore as a kid, and now that I've grown up, it looks silly IMO. 3) The band could not be leather ( Starts to stink after a while) nor could it be metal links ( The wife complains about it getting caught in her hair) and while this is a little softer than I expected, and it feels a little unusual, it is very comfortable. The Compass works well, the Thermometer reads close enough after you have taken it off your wrist for a while, that I can hang it up at night when camping and get a good idea of how hot/cold it is. I have not run to the beach enough to test the accuracy of the Tide indicator, but I imagine that will be close enough as well. The watch looks good, tells time, is visible when I want it to be, is comfortable to have on, and even has a few doo-hickies on it that are cool. ... show more

Beautiful Paper Weight

I was really excited about this watch. Way more than I would usually spend on a watch. It was a few weeks before I got it sized. Once I did I stated wearing it daily. Often I would glance down at it struggle to read the dial, read it and then say to myself, that can't be the time. Check my phone and sure enough it was wrong. Come to find out, it's not that it was keeping the time inaccuarately, it is that the minute hand and hour hand are misaligned (out of time) with each other. With the minute hand zeroed (12oclock) the hour hand points directly in-between two hours, rather than precisely to one of them. By the time the minute hand makes it to 25min past the hour the hour hand is already reading in the next hour making reading the dial pretty much impossible. I'm outside of the return window now. I've got this brand new watch that is a useless paper weight. It there is any way the seller or Timex could help me out that would be really great. ... show more

I love this watch!

I had been looking for a tide watch for the past few months. I didn't find very many options. Most advertised tide watches only cover 200 beaches around the world which is great for surfers but I'm a sailor on San Francisco Bay and wanted something a little more accurate. My other option was a smart watch but I wasn't sure it would really be practical for me. I found several models from Timex and decided after reading the reviews to buy this one. I've been using the watch for 5 days and love it!! The tide feature is pretty accurate. In 5 days it's probably only off by 15 or 20 minutes according to the estimates by NOAA for the area where my boat is berthed. The temperature is affected by your body temp, but after checking the temps over the past few days it's pretty close to take 10 degrees off for body heat. I haven't used the compass much but it does appear to work fine too. Some reviews complained about the buttons and crown. They are durable, solid and don't appear to cause concern of breaking. The band is silicon and fits very comfortably. I wear my watches a little loose and it feels great. It has some stretch so if you want to tighten it down it would still be flexible and comfortable. So far I'm very happy with the purchase and don't want to take it off. It looks good with casual wear but could be worn with a suit as well. I would recommend this watch to anyone looking for a well built and solid tide watch. ... show more

Thick watch, thick leather band, small characters, elegant watch.

Very thick watch, very thick and stiff watch band. Very small characters on dial. The watch itself is 13mm thick, so a big watch. The leather band is also very thick, 3.75mm, making it very stiff. It makes it somewhat uncomfortable to wear, although I suspect it could get "broken in" eventually. But it also make it very difficult to fasten and unfasten the strap. The writing on the face, especially the tide and temperature markings, as well as the date window, are very small. If you need reading glasses, you won't be able to read them. Mine came with no instructions at all, but I was able to find them on the Timex site. That said, I do like the overall design of the watch, so I'm debating whether to keep or return it. ... show more

Pleased with capabilities

I am pleased with the capabilities of this watch. Accuracy of the Temperature is very good but the watch must be removed from your wrist for temperature of your surroundings. The Temperature response is slow. The compass is accurate and can be set up to include variation correction for True readings. I find the Tide readings very good and matching the information from my Tide Clock. The tide feature is most important to me as I live in the Northeast Tidal area with tides of nine feet ot more and walk on the beaches daily and opperate marine vessels. The compass is interesting and would be of greater use on land navigation as boats have many compasses available. The temperature is great to check in the morning before I place the watch on my wrist. Also very important is the time keeping capability, which I find excellent. I do like the analogue display of the compass better than the digital display I have on another watch. I do agree with others that the Watch Band will have to be replaced soon. Due to the size and weight of the watch, it has to be secured snugly and removing it requires sharp bending of the band to release it from the clasp that holds it. The powered indiglow works well but viewing the Glow from the radiation dots and hands is not effective very long after it is removed from the light. I find this watch a good value. ... show more
