  • Passed The Treadmill Test!
Size: 13 Color: Black Full Grain
I've spent over twenty years thinking that there wasn't a pair of boots out there that wouldn't give me blisters or stab into the tops of my feet. Along with this purchase I also ordered six other pairs of boots, which were a high-priced nightmare. (good thing I never joined the army} Luckily, this time I had accesses to a treadmill. I put the treadmill on a steep incline, and it's been an invaluable indicator as to weather a boot or shoe will work out on the trail. This was the only boot that passed the treadmill test. My feet were sliding around in these a little, but after inserting an insole my feet locked right in, and the insoles made these boots very comfortable. They've been the perfect winter hiking boot for up here in the mountains. They work great in the snow and rain. I just got back from a hiking vacation in the redwoods where it was extremely muddy. There's no way I could've made those hikes without these boots, and yes, my feet were completely dry after each one of those muddy, beautiful hikes, even after standing in a puddle and splashing water up on them to get off most of the mud afterword. It's so liberating after all these years to have a comfortable boot that I can hike with in any weather condition. I was so happy that I bought a second pair. I'm seriously considering buying the brown leather ones as well, just to have all 3. Afterall, I have twenty plus bootless years to make up for. For the black leather boots, I melted in Sno seal beeswax {available on amazon} which really softened the leather nicely and added another layer of waterproofing and comfort. I'll do the same if I end up getting the brown leather boots. I'm hesitant to use Sno seal on my wheat nubucks because there such a great looking [almost] dress boot, and I don't want to darken the color, they're already very comfortable and have never leaked. I use the nubucks in snow, or rain hikes on gravel or paved roads. I then wipe them down with a wet rag after I finish. Needless to say, I use my black Timberlands for trudging around in the mud, but I also wipe those down as well. ... show more

  • Very good for what they are
Size: 13 Color: Black Full Grain
These boots are comfortable. They fit nicely and feel good under foot. The insoles aren't the best but can be switched out easily if needed. Another plus is that they look pretty nice. I currently have the black ones. I used to have wheat ones but I sadly left them in a hotel room on a business trip. I liked the wheat better, but bought black replacements because I didn't have any black boots and wanted a little variety. They do a nice job keeping my feet warm when it's cold. That isn't to say that they aren't good to wear in warm weather too, but they are especially nice in the cold. They are very nice to walk in, wearing more like a sneaker than other boots I own and wear regularly (Thorogood, Irish Setter, Rockrooster, etc). I find that when I'm going for a casual walk or a short hike, these are the shoes I most often reach for. The outsole is sturdy enough with a good lug pattern that digs in nicely to whatever terrain you find yourself trudging through. There are a couple of things I don't like. First, the outsole is cemented on rather than welted so once the sole is worn out they are pretty much trash. However they do seem to be cemented well as the sole really holds on well. Still, cemented construction isn't my favorite but that's not the end of the world at this price point. The leather quality seems okay, but definitely not anything amazing. Still, there is a good amount of leather on these boots and for the money it's better than most. All in all, I am rating these as 5 star boots. To qualify, I am not comparing them to my Thorogood boots or Irish Setter boots. They are in a different category altogether for me. I'm putting them up against tennis shoes and mid range hiking boots. They are very good in that space. They are similar and on par with some Keens and Ariats I have worn in the past, but are a little less expensive. I'd say they are easily worth the $80 to $100 most people will pay but I wouldn't pay much more than that. They have the feel of a $100 to $120 boot so for less than $100 they are a pretty good value. I would certainly buy these again but next time I'm going back to the wheat color because I did prefer those. The Nubuck leather they are made with seems to be a little higher quality too. ... show more

  • Finally a Shoe That is Actually Wide
Size: 12 Wide Color: Medium Brown Full Grain
I've been on the hunt for a shoe/boot for hiking and general usage for a while now. I've bought and returned many up until this boot. I used to get 11 1/2 4E but could only get " wide" . I went to a foot doctor recently and measured my feet. I'm actually a 12 4E but I am a 3E around my toes. I seen this boot advertising the 4E and I had to get it. First I think it looks a little plain, but I am a little plain, so it doesn't matter. Besides long pants cover the sides anyway and all you see is the toes. I think they look great with jeans. I tried them on for the first time and was super happy. I knew they were a keeper. They went on really well and the laces tightened up better than most boots. The bottom part of the boot tightened up too. It's been my experience that you could tlreally only get the top part tight. This was great as it made them feel better. I wore them today on my trike ride and they were very comfy. The toes had ample room, the foot felt great with good arch support. Very comfortable. I can only expect them to get better with more breaking in. As a long time boot shopper, me just keeping them says it all. I recommend this boot. ... show more
