REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK “Our June Reese’s Book Club pick is the perfect summer read!!! The Unwedding by Ally Condie opens with a wedding at a gorgeous resort in Big Sur... but everything begins to fall apart when the main character Ellery discovers a dead body the morning of the ceremony.” – Reese Witherspoon The White Lotus meets Agatha Christie in this bold novel from a 1 New York Times bestselling author, “a knife’s-edge whodunit that’s as much a thriller as it is an exquisite meditation on grief and loss.” (Nicola Yoon) Ellery Wainwright is alone at the edge of the world. She and her husband, Luke, were supposed to spend their twentieth wedding anniversary together at the luxurious Resort at Broken Point in Big Sur, California. Where better to celebrate a marriage, a family, and a life together than at one of the most stunning places on earth? But now she’s traveling solo. To add insult to injury, there’s a wedding at Broken Point scheduled during her stay. Ellery remembers how it felt to be on the cusp of everything new and wonderful, with a loved and certain future glimmering just ahead. Now, she isn’t certain of anything except for her love for her kids and her growing realization that this place, though beautiful, is unsettling. When Ellery discovers the body of the groom floating in the pool in the rain, she realizes that she is not the only one whose future is no longer guaranteed. Before the police can reach Broken Point, a mudslide takes out the road to the resort, leaving the guests trapped. When another guest dies, it’s clear something horrible is brewing. Everyone at Broken Point has a secret. And everyone has a shadow. Including Ellery. Read more

A thrilling read full of relatable living characters and tons of mystery. Highly recommend this read to all who want to play detective and feel like you made new friends at the same time.

  • Beautiful Scenery...But SOOOO Slow....
The Unwedding is a mix of amateur sleuthing, mystery, and suspense, all set against the backdrop of a luxurious resort in Big Sur. With elements of a locked-room and cozy-type mystery, the setting is spectacular – and captivated me from the start. Condie paints the surroundings so well that you can almost hear the waves and feel the tension in the storm. For audiobook fans, the included PDF map of the resort is a cool bonus, and helps to immerse you even further into the setting. Unfortunately, the character development and pacing is lackluster. Ellery, the protagonist, is a recently divorced single mom who is at the resort alone and becomes stranded after a mudslide isolates the guests. She is kind and sweet but is constantly struggling with her past trauma—both from her marriage and a tragic accident. While this backstory provides depth, it also renders her character more passive than proactive. I found her internal dialog to be overly whiny at times, especially when placed alongside the urgency of the murder mystery plot. As a trauma counselor, I appreciate that Condie made a strong effort to explore the complexities of grief and loss through Ellery. However, in this was just the wrong setting for it and it went on way too long. Her constant dwelling on the past seemed to overshadow the forward momentum of the plot. While imperfect protagonists can add depth, Ellery's emotional struggles felt mismatched with the story’s pace, making her less suited for the demands of this suspenseful narrative. I thought the plot started strong, but it gradually loses momentum, and then bottoms out completely. What begins as a tense, engaging mystery gets bogged down by unnecessary dialogue and side plots that don’t push the story forward. There’s a sense that Condie, got a little lost in her beautiful setting and left the main plot to fizzle out instead of intensifying. The ending felt rushed to me and was overloaded with information—some of which didn't seem to tie into the final resolution. Key details were thrown in without enough explanation or connection to the story’s earlier developments. This is definitely a visually rich and atmospheric read that may appeal to fans of cozy mysteries and isolated settings, but its uneven pacing, boring characters and overwhelming conclusion left me unsatisfied. Honestly, I couldn’t wait for it to end. ... show more

  • A good mystery
I loved it from beginning to end. I read it all in one sitting, all in one day! Great book.

  • I recommend this book
The Unwedding is a murder mystery… and so much more. Having never read one of her books before I don’t know if this is normal for Condie; she throws out a lot of red herrings which insures a literary maze-like experience. As I mentioned the book is so much more than a murder mystery to me. First are the richly developed characters and second is the beautiful setting and third is the use of art and narrative to frame the story. I hope you will read it and like it as much as I do. ... show more

  • Interesting premise that turned to cheese
Fun start to the book with an engaging plot and likeable characters. But the story unraveled with an overdone "who done it" reveal followed by a trying-to-hard-to-be-philosophical ending that got a little hokey. Enjoyable read but a let down at TBE end.

  • boring writing
I thought the idea and plot was interesting, but the way it was written and explained lost me a lot throughout the book.

  • Who will solve the crime?
Ellery, recently divorced, is taking her anniversary trip by herself, to Big Sur. At the resort there was also a wedding that was taking place. Ellery befriends two people who are vacationing there, and at first they let her in on their vacation antics, but it soon turns into them trying to solve a crime. The groom is found dead and everyone is a suspect. Then one of the groomsmen turns up dead, and there is a mudslide preventing them from leaving the resort. I felt this story did drag quite a bit in the beginning, I did listen to the audible version and loved the narrators. ... show more

  • The Unwedding
Entertaining suspense, mystery novel. I wanted a bit more depth from the main characters. At times the writing felt a bit like a soap opera drama. Overall a good read.
