A new set of characters, complex, realistically and richly drawn. A dreadful crime, with echoes down the years. Some frighteningly normal small town residents hiding hideous drives. This was a great read, not least because the author lightly sprinkled revelations about the main characters throughout the book without ramming their implications down the readers’ throat. I absolutely love this author. This is the first book in a new series and I can’t wait to read more. The book was on the longer side and I was nervous I would get bored. That was not the case. I loved it. I really like so much about this story - the small county setting, sheriffs department, large family dynamics, characters, drama, mystery, and so much more. Only reason I can not rate this book 5 stars is I pretty much figured out two of the bad guys from pretty early on. With that said I still enjoyed this book very much. And the end shocker was the real one. It all makes sense now but damn that hit me. I even “awed” out loud. Another great read. ... show more

Karin Slaughter wrote one of my all-time favorite books, The Good Daughter, but this one fell short (even though it's super duper long). I knew who done it right away and then had to read forever to be right. I've read 5 or 6 of her books. This one is just ok.
