  • This series in patently incredible
I don't watch many "movies" because I am more interested in non-fiction topics. But when I became a premium member and just so happened to have a Roku III, only then did I discover "The Unit." I was amazed that this offering was originally available on regular TV and soon I became a huge fan - and I hate the words "Huge Fan." The cast was absolutely spectacular, and even though this group represented the "best of the best" in military service (and I mean the wives as well as their "warfighters") there were understandable chinks in everyone's armor ("no let's not go to the running car - let's go to the shack with the chainsaws") and no one was a saint in the way they lived their personal lives was probably a mirror to the human condition. While I rate Dennis Haysbert as the best of the best, all of the cast members were incredible. There were some disappointments in that some fantastic cast members were not carried for all 69 episodes, but I realize if you're that good a performer or hostage to logical story changes, there will be other lucrative projects and folk have to "move on" to grow in their careers. So be it, but I will miss this series when it expires after 4 more episodes. As a retired Naval Officer so proud of what our Navy SEALS and the special forces of all of our military forces do to take the fight to the "bad guys" of the world, I highly recommend this series to anyone who is unaware of the truly incredible work that these guys and gals do to keep US out of harm's way and do so under the Radar of public acclaim. David Mamet is to be commended for his efforts in this series. I recommend on Amazon his book: "The Secret Knowledge," published in 2011. It is a book that Victor Davis Hanson has said is "...a moving lyrical good-bye to the contemporary Left in its 'all-too-well-known manifestations' and '...readers will delight in the fascinating ways...'" he documents his case. ... show more

  • So good CBS had to cut it....
I was fortunate enough to channel surf onto an episode of this series midway through season 2. I immediately added it to my DVR and ultimately bought the DVDs for all 4 seasons. Like many others, I'm disappointed to see it end. The Unit has always told a strong story in each episode. Some series become predictable early on, but that never happened here. Stories continued to surprise, characters continued to develop. I'm old enough that I don't feel attached to fictitious characters, yet those in The Unit pulled me in. I occasionally found myself facing a challenge at work asking "What would Snake Doc do?". As strong as the storyline is, the characters made this series. Exceptional. Like others, I am dissatisfied to see the series end. Many story lines are unresolved, and there is obviously still gas in the tank for more episodes. I'm a middle-aged guy who has finally earned some disposable income that doesn't jingle in my pocket, yet modern marketing deems me irrelevant. I don't watch so-called reality shows (not my reality BTW) where nearly-naked nit-wits generally make buffoons of themselves. I don't know the people who do watch them. But to watch TV today, they are both loaded and easy to separate from their loot. I'm not sure what it takes in TV-Land to make a show financially successful. In my world, the successful show is the one I'll stay up past midnight to watch, even when I have to be to work early the next morning. The successful show is the one that I think about for a couple of days, not a couple of seconds, after watching it. The successful show is the one I wait for anxiously each week. The successful show is the one I will miss when some TV executive nit-wit (who would fit perfectly into his own reality TV) cancels it. In other words, this show. Get it. ... show more

  • "A SUPERIOR TV SERIES OF THE MID 2000S-THE UNIT!"
Riding on the success of his TV series "THE SHEILD" on FX,Shawn Ryan and David Mamet's "THE UNIT" series was a well-made drama action format that realistically portrays our Military men in the finest way ever! Dennis Haysbert delivers a five-star performance as the leader of his elite team when he's not telling viewers if they're in good hands through his Allstate insurance commercials these military men also try maintaining their family lives on base. the former CBS series from Twentieth Century Fox Television and Ryan's Mid Kidd Productions deserved a longer run since its 2006 debut proving that network stupidity is still a major handicap in this business! co-starring Robert Patrick ("TERMINATOR II:JUDGEMENT DAY") as "Col.Ryan" the team took care of extremely dangerous mission and threats of the early 2000s after the 9/11 attacks showing a no-nonsense approach over how the Military defends our Nation against terrorists and other enemies of our country! an extremely superior Television series most worthy of any die-hard collector's ultimate collection,i'd highly recommend this series to only the most serious fans of realistic TV dramas that are well written and well produced-truly worth its weight in gold,i'd buy the entire seasons of this series for viewers to watch and enjoy. a sentiment unworthy of the CBS network's dismal track record of canceling great TV shows that deserved longer runs as "THE UNIT" did! buy this series,,it's worth it!! ... show more

  • THE SEASON THAT SAVES THE SERIES. I WISH.
I collected and revisit the first three season of this fine series. In those first seasons the plots occasionally slid in soap operatic's, straining focus and credulity. Good as the shows were, they seemed to evade perfection for catering to a wider audience. This final season seems driven by wanting to go out with a roar, not a whimper. No compromises while production values soared, plotting and writing seemed more like I'd expect from a brilliant talent like David Mamet. By the way, a fine feature film showing his writing/producing excellence would be Spartan. THE UNIT Season Four's episodes are grittier, more realistic and certainly more consistently entertaining. I hope some non-Network executives pick up and run with this fine series. If you like such military action, you might also consider OVER*THERE Over There (13 Episodes), from Steven Bochco of NYPD BLUE fame. The series didn't last a year; no doubt because its authenticity was, if not politically incorrect in depicting the ironies of the Mid-East wars, the depictions of gut-wrenching battle conditions and ambiguities of the rightness/ wrongness of the politics involved. Both aborted series seemed aimed for the Soldier of Fortune macho market; SOF people I've spoken with re these two fine prematurely-pulled series swear by them. But they swear at or about anything. ... show more

  • Great show - too bad it's gone. Awesome theme music!
An excellent show. It was sort of mucked up a little by the writers, by confusing dramatic plots related to the families, but the parts where the team members are doing their actual jobs was very entertaining. I'd love for this show, or one like it to return - but focus on the missions performed by our SpecOps forces. Perhaps a theme of "JSOC" (Joint Special Operations Command) - where they could include Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force special operators in various missions. And then focus very little on incorporating their families into 'missions', and instead highlight the fear, hardship and pride associated with military families (spouses worrying, children missing parents, team members missing families, excitement when they come home, being able to afford things on low-pay, etc.). Also, someone needs to turn the theme music into a full work. It is really awesome! ... show more

  • Intelligent and Riveting
Impossible as I thought it could be, the fourth season of the Unit is even better than the last. I couldn't wait to receive it, and it didn't disappoint. The Unit is by far the best program television has seen in a very long time. It is nothing short of criminal that it has been canceled. My family could have easily watched another ten years of this riveting show. In the days of mindless programming, the Unit features strong, intelligent men and women with plots that grab you from the first moment to the last. The characters are all wonderfully developed, the action as good as any movie, just more realistic...all this without obsceneties! Hollywood, should use this program as the model for so many of their action movies, although the Unit does set the bar very very high. If you buy only one television series, this is the one to buy. It is nothing short of criminal that CBS canceled the Unit. However, they did cancel the Equalizer and Beauty and the Beast before this. In other words, when it comes to quality and intelligent programming there is a very short lifespan on CBS. ... show more

  • The Unit Season 4
Season Four continues with its story of "The Unit" that takes out all enemies, foreign and domestic, of the United States, as well as the interaction of personalities of the team. Two new characters have been added this season: a man and a woman. At first, I was put off by the new female character as the usual Hollywood P.C. garbage is to have a "tough" female who can do anything a man can do, maybe even more, when there are enormous physical and psychological exertions. For another example of this just look at the Hollywood myth with Demi Moore playing a tough soldier in the film "G.I.Jane." Demi Moore admitted that in reality there was absolutely no way she could keep up with those SEALS and it was all play acting . . . as if we who live in the real world ever need to be told that. Fortunately, the producers of The Unit have not taken the G.I.Jane route here, but have blended into a very believable female role that nicely complements the male characters and leads the viewer to being very happy she is on The Unit's side. It's just a shame that this is the last season, another one or two seasons would have been nice. Worth seeing. ... show more
