  • Incredibly detailed book. Binding cover not ideal.
Incredibly detailed book that I’m treating like an advanced college course. However, at this price or any book really, I should not have a front cover upon breaking binding, turning first pg., immediately hear and feel telltale signs I’m going to loose front cover in no time and I’ll be going to coffee shops often with it as well as my studio. So, I had to spend $15 on book binding tape to reinforce entire front/back pgs., and binding seams inside. Don’t get me wrong; awesome book and only one out there of its kind contemporaneously. When you eventually need to do a second edition, please consider the long term survivorship of your awesome labor of love. ... show more

  • Excellent guide to Studio One
Many developers seek solace in artistic creation when not actively creating code. My personal preference is for creating graphical art through pencil or digital means but many others seek musical endeavors. If music is the preference, and digital music in particular, “The Ultimate Studio One Pro Book” (Packt, 2023) by Dorak Somunkiran offers detailed guidance to develop everything from an individual song to a full show. While noticeably lacking in any coding and with only minimal technical foundations, this book provides step-by-step instructions for every tool and most plugins for the Studio One Pro software. Divided into four parts, the work covers an initial introduction, creating music, editing songs, and then mixing and mastering the entire creation. Recommend for anyone with an interest in digital audio. Part one starts with the most common elements, obtaining and installing Studio One with either the prime, artist, or pro variants. The first option is free, the second is designed for the home artist, and the last is for professional productions. The section covers the basics of the program, installing the appropriate version, and then the basic tabs and instructions. Walking through the tabs highlights a difference between Studio One and other Digital Audio Workstations(DAW) i that Studio One uses song for the smaller element and project for the large one while other DAWs sometimes reverse that flow. The middle sections spend a number of chapters describing how to create and edit music. Creating involves either recording an audio track or directly creating through adding digital music. Once created, every possible option for modifying the sounds is described including eliminating silent sections, transposing various elements from one spot to another, or even changing the pitch and key associated with the recorded music. Not only does the book explain how the tool works with a sample, the author also describes why particular elements might be used. This is a step often skipped during this type of directive documentation. The final section prepares the user to go from their individual environment to playing for a larger audience. A large number of third-party plugins and options are described such as using reverb and other effects as well as useful tricks such as organizing the tracks by color within Studio One or taking advantage of stereo playback by specifying certain sounds to certain speakers. This area also offers the only technical interpretation explaining signal flow through channels and the potential to chain inputs and outputs to different locations. The book wraps up with an appendix suggesting further best practices for everything from technical creation to management practices. While the book did show one what to do with a great number of features, the gap was that no samples were linked or documented to allow the reader to hear the various changes. With any DAW, the true quality resides in how it helps adjust the output, and the lack of samples made this difficult. In large part, this is likely due to the fact that different individuals prefer different music types and adaptions but some connection, even when expanding beyond the merely two-dimensional, would have given a lot of the instructions more impact. Maybe most professional musicians are sufficiently skilled to look at a sine wave or a MIDI track and understand the output but I am not. Overall, this was a great book for anyone involved in Digital Audio Workstations or that process. “The Ultimate Studio One Pro Book” by Dorak Somunkiran provides a step-by-step guide to the paid and free features offered in Studio One. However, since it is intended to promote Studio One, there is no direct comparison to other DAW workstations nor are any samples provided to comparatively assess produced songs or features. If you are in the market for a DAW, Studio One is a good place to start and this book can certainly help. ... show more

  • From A Rookie to a Pro! Absolutely fantastic!!
I was actually a sales rep for Presonus several years ago. I spent years preaching the virtues of Studio One at many Guitar Centers, Sam Ash stores, churches, hobbyists and more. This is by far the most easily understandable manual that I've ever encountered. This teaches you from step one. From launching the app, to learning about dynamics, FX, compression etc, all the way to mixing and mastering. A step by step guide that anyone from a novice, to a pro or from someone coming from another DAW. I believe that this is a go to. I'd especially encourage anyone who's ever taken even a slight interest in music production and techniques to take this book and utilize it to the max . What makes this stand out as well are the screenshots and diagrams. You can literally have the manual one screen while duplicating the process on another (with Studio One running). This manual really emphasizes the powerful simplicity of drag and drop. One does not need to be afraid to launch the software after learning about it's ease of use. In a day and age of having AI and apps do the work for you , it's refreshing to see some authentic and legit techniques that can actually be used in any DAW. That being said, I do believe the more you read this manual and apply it's lessons the more likely that you will stick with Studio One as your DAW of choice, regardless of the iteration you choose. Presonus Audio is a fantastic brand to work with, this only emphasizes it. Great work, wish I could give 6 stars!! ... show more

  • S1 steps is an organized guide
Finally an S1 book that is well written and comprehensive. Can recommend this book to all S1 users. I've used this book in place of the official manual I find difficult to follow.

  • Wow! An indepth but not overwhelming tutorial on how to use an intuitive DAW!
This 360 page tutorial takes a person through the beginning steps of never using a DAW before to recording, producing and creating imaginative song structure and then the full mix and master process. Or, if you are like me, and have used multiple DAW platforms like Pro Tools, Ableton, and Logic Pro, you can use this book as a guide to familiarize yourself with the tools and workflows of this highly intuitive software. I have had Studio One as a stand by DAW for a long time, but before this book I had only used it once or twice; after I took this book and implemented some of its workflows and really gave the DAW a chance, I found that Studio One is a great tool that was made understandable on a simple and searchable level by the genius of Doruk's explanations. Presonus should include this book with the purchase of any equipment that include Studio One, or at least provide a link for access to purchase. It is an amazing resource, and even if you don't get into Studio One, It can become a great introductory teaching tool for beginning audio production students on microphone technique and best studio practices. ... show more
