  • This will teach you how to use the product! It is worth the time you put in to it!
I own a small online retail business and I want to create several short videos for it. I majored in Broadcast Communications in college, so I have some idea what I'm doing . But college was 30 years ago. I haven't done any "film-making" in a VERY long time, and I have actually NEVER done it on a computer. That's right, I have never used iMovie or anything like it, believe it or not. So when faced with the task of trying to save money and make some short videos by myself, I decided to go with Final Cut Pro X, because it was highly recommended. I installed the trial version, took one look at it, and thought, "oh boy, what have I gotten myself into?" I immediately bought two books: this one and the Learn by Video "Introducing Final Cut Pro X." I started out with the Learn By Video, because I thought it would give me a good visual jumpstart, and I was right. It gives an excellent overview of what the product is, and basically how to use it. I will review that product separately. I liked it a lot and highly recommend it. After completing the Learn By Video book (I didn't do the exercises, I just watched the lessons), I fooled around with the product and created a rough cut of a little video for my business (I had already recorded the footage and taken some photos, etc). THEN, I dove into this book by Diana Weynand. Wow, I love this book. First of all, it is a training course; it is not a reference manual (although you could sorta use it as a reference manual after you finish the book). You need to start at Chapter 1 and go through to Chapter 12. It will teach you many of the finer points of using the product, such as placing markers, the Precision Editor, etc. It takes time to go through it all, but it will be worth your time and effort. Allow yourself about 90 minutes per lesson. Even the lessons that say "60 minutes" have exercises at the end that take extra time. But it's all good! It's creative! You take the footage that Diana provides and you play with it, using the skills you just learned and have built upon, to reinforce everything. And doing it is fun, IMO. I already know some things about how to do storytelling with video from my college training. I find this book interesting because it not only explains how to use Final Cut Pro X, but it teaches you something about the film making process. I find that very enjoyable. If you don't know much about video storytelling, check out Lynda.com, because they have some really good courses you can take about video production. The author, Diana Weynand, is not just a technical writer. She is professional editor and director and has worked in film and TV. So she brings a lot of practical industry experience to this book, which I really appreciate. The book is not just one long slog of "click this and do that." It actually is rather interesting, IMO. As I write this review, I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book. If you do one chapter per day, you'll know this product very well within 2 weeks. I highly recommend it. With a combination of the Learn By Video book and this one, you won't be looking at Final Cut Pro X , wincing, and reaching for the Tylenol. You will know what to do. The combination of this book and the Learn By Video will give you the skills and confidence to get started. You just need to be patient. It will take a few weeks to get up to speed. If you need to know the product instantly and have no experience with products like this, you will just be frustrated. You need to give yourself a few weeks to learn and understand it properly first. Soon I'll be done with that first video that I've created and plan to upload it to YouTube and put it on my retail website. So far, I'm pleased with how things are going. And I'm happy that I didn't have spend a lot of money on in-person training. After this, I may also buy Apple Motion, because I understand that it has a lot of additional titles and effects. And if I do, I will probably do a similar training course for that. So in conclusion: I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Great Book for a Versatile Application
Weynand has structured this text such that, while crammed full of useful information and tips, it is nevertheless easy to follow. She makes use of several projects (provided with the included DVD) that appeal to different interests, but for me the most interesting to work with were "Delicious Peace" (a promotional video commercial for an African coffee maker) and "From Zero to Hero" (a promotional video for NASCAR). I'm not a hot rod kind of guy, but I have to admit that the way Final Cut Pro X so easily and seemlessly integrated the driver interviews with racing shots—all with Weynand's guiding hand—was riveting. By the time she had me adding SLOW MOTION effects, SOUND effects, FREEZE FRAME, and other devices, the final product was quite professional looking. And this is my first attempt at working with film production software! Throughout the book the author provides various methods for doing things, including KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS (always listed again at the end of each chapter), and she covers all the basics, including: Exploring the Interface, Importing Video, Organizing Clips, Editing Clips, Applying Transitions, Working with Audio, Titles, Themes and Generators, Re-Timing (Slow Motion, Reverse Motion, etc.), Color Enhancement, and more. I had only two problems with the text: One, since I was working with version 10.0.6 of FCP X, on occasion the menus/displays were at odds with those shown in the text (a very minor problem); Two, some of the projects used in some of the lessons were not there! This was a frustration. So, I simply used other projects and still followed her directions as best I could, applying the new lessons to different projects. Even with this handicap, I still learned about 95% of what the book had to offer—and that's A LOT! Yes, this text is well worth the money. I can't believe how much faster my workflow is now than when I was first just trying to figure Final Cut Pro X on my own just reading the owner's guide as I worked. PRO's: • Completely CUSTOMIZABLE KEYBOARD COMMANDS (as with Logic Pro 9, Sibelius, Microsoft Word); • Very FLEXIBLE and INTUITIVE INTERFACE; • FAST PROCESSING; • Generous bank of SOUND EFFECTS and SPECIAL EFFECTS; • Easily incorporates VIDEO CLIPS with PHOTOS and AUDIO; • FAST, EASY SHARING capabilities (to QuickTime, YouTube, etc.) CON's: • Older text a bit out of sync with newer versions of FCP X • A few of the DVD Project Clips don't show up in FCP X for some reason (most do, though) Overall Assessment: I STRONGLY RECOMMEND both Final Cut Pro X and especially this text by Diana Weynand. The book will orient your thinking into the world of film and greatly improve your workflow. ... show more

  • Good Survey Course for FCPX
First off, let me say that I'm not taking this course for certification but am merely trying to learn the software and be more efficient in my workflow. I'm about halfway through this basic FCPX course and my summary comment is that it does a good job of covering the basics. It does involve a time commitment and the ability to resist jumping ahead (especially if you're a FCP7 user), but overall it is well thought out in terms of "metering" the information flow and in illustrating the multiple ways to accomplish a given task. The authors have also made a conscious effort to make it more engaging by including color on industry best practices, Occasionally this is a little corny ("the director just walked in and wants to see all of the wide shots from the day's shoot"), but if you're not in the biz on a day to day basis this approach gives you something to think about when you edit your own video. I didn't have any issues installing and mounting the tutorial files that are on the enclosed dvd. My only regret is that I didn't shop around first, as my 8 year-old son found some coupon codes online that would have it cheaper than on Amazon... ... show more

  • Defective lessons download
This book should be a useful guide, however the lesson files on the DVD are defective. I have been unable to load them despite following the instructions in the book (Error with file format). This is unacceptable; I intend to return this book Monday.
