  • Well written and a helpful guide
Format: Kindle
This particular book was intriguing to me as I just began creating food for my senior lab. This book mixes nutritional insights with practical recipes, making it a great addition to your list of needs for dog owners who want to ensure their pets receive the best homemade meals. The book is divided into two main sections: a detailed guide on canine nutrition and a collection of easy-to-follow recipes. This book covers everything from essential vitamins and minerals to understanding specific dietary needs based on breed, age, and health conditions. The author emphasizes the importance of balanced diets and provides tips on avoiding common pitfalls when preparing homemade dog food. The recipe section of diverse meals, ranging from simple everyday dishes to more elaborate treats, alone is worth having the book. Each recipe is designed with average pet owners in mind, ensuring that meals are quick and easy to prepare without compromising on quality or nutrition. The instructions are clear, and the ingredients are readily available, making it accessible even for those new to cooking for their pets. I particularly like its focus on using natural ingredients, but the lack of specific serving sizes and calorie counts could be a minor drawback, to some pet owners. ... show more

  • A wealth of information and detailed explanation to follow.
Format: Kindle
I absolutely love this book! You can tell the author is extremely passionate with helping our doggies live a healthy and long life. She goes into detail on what everything means as far as what certain vitamins, proteins contribute. She provides a chart on weight and what amount to feed is recommended depending on activity level, from puppies to seniors. The recipes are amazing and easy to follow and most items are things that I usually buy for us humans🤭. The book goes into detail on reading labels on kibble food if that is the route you go. I have been making homemade food for my dogs for a few months and my poor fur baby is still so itchy. Now that I know what he has a food intolerance to, I can do better. There are so many recipes in this book that have the ingredients that he can have. The author has mentioned the “food carousel”. That’s what I feel like I have been on for a few months. I am jumping off that carousel and making these recipes. Best wishes to you and your fur babies. ... show more

  • 68% of the book is not recipes
Format: Kindle
The first 68% of the book is all about canine nutrition needs, plusses and minuses of the commercial Keeble, and tips on how to introduce a dog to a new diet. At 68%, we see the first recipe, Chicken and pumpkin. The recipe is pretty involved and includes Balance It canine supplements. The recipes are broken down into Chicken, turkey, pork, and beef recipes. There is also a section for special diets, such as low-carb, low-fat, and hypoallergenic recipes. When I looked up Balance It supplements, I found their website has excellent recipes. I especially liked a free custom balanced recipe application, which generates a recipe for a specific age dog or cat. It even allows you to enter medical conditions to tune the recipe. I am glad the book mentioned this supplement so I could find the BalanceIt website. This is a thoughtful book, and using this approach to feed your best friend requires a serious commitment of time, money, and thought. ... show more

  • Does the link for the free book really work?
The book was ok but there was a promo for a free dog treat cookbook in which I received the link but it doesn't work and I cant seem to find a way to communicate with Ava Barkley to see what the problem is. She also has an empty FB page.

  • Limited
I've been feeding homemade raw diets for over 30 years. Some things really annoyed me. First, dogs don't need carbs. You will never see a wolf grazing in a grain field. Second, the diet really lacks variety. It might meet basic AAFCO guidelines, but dogs like variety just like people. For a newbie to home feeding the book. Is okay. It's a foundation. A place to start. ... show more

  • Great Guide/Info
Format: Kindle
I really love how this book is non-threatening. Meaning, if anyone has done any research, there are those who are against kibble and those who are against raw or gently cooked. Ava explains all the realms of beliefs and the pros and cons in this book. She gives factual information so you can decide what suits you and your fur baby the best. This book is also an easy read, it's not too technical, it has a lightness about it. I especially like it because it's not 400 pages worth of scientific stuff to filter through. Through. It's actionable items with short and precise details. This one truly is an easy reference guide. The recipes that are included seem to have ingredients that are fairly easy to source, and the instructions are clear. I have purchased many books on how to feed dogs properly, and I will put this one at the top! ... show more

  • Comprehensive and Written with Care
Format: Kindle
This is an excellent primer on the whole cook-for-your-dog school of thought. More than half of the book is devoted to analyzing the notion of preparing food by hand instead of buying kibble by the bag. The latter half is a collection of meals that are well-balanced to meet all of doggy's health needs. The main issue about going this route seems to be the negative health issues that can result from blindly following a dry food diet. If you do decide to be a chef for your dog, then all the details of nutrition are now in your own hands. Suddenly, you have to consider all aspects of your dog's health needs, and this book seems to be following accepted guidelines on that score. It appears to be well-researched and authoritative. I doubt that most people put this kind of care and attention into their own diets. ... show more
