Description

Two reclusive sisters. A crumbling mansion. A dead doppelgรคnger. The New York Times bestseller from the author known as the American Agatha Christie. The Birches was one of the grand mansions of the 1920s, with a ballroom, tennis courts, and, of course, a swimming pool. But after the crash of โ€™29, when Lois and Judithโ€™s father killed himself to escape his debts, the family turned the summer home into a fulltime retreat from the world. Decades later, Judith is the queen of New York society, a fast-living beauty whose nerves are beginning to fray, while Lois still lives in the dilapidated old mansion, writing mystery novels to pay the bills. She is about to encounter a mystery of her own. To stave off a nervous breakdown, Judith moves in with her kid sister. Terrified of an unnamed threat, she nails her windows shut and locks the door. Soon, a woman is found dead in the poolโ€”a stranger who bears a shocking resemblance to Judith. In a family with a history of tragedy, a chilling new chapter is about to be written. Read more

  • Life Twenty Years after The Great Crash of 1929 (Read during COVID-19)
This is my 2nd Mary Roberts Rinehart & oddly it's the last one she wrote, published in 1952. I've not read the one other reviewers are saying The Swimming Pool is a reworking of so I never saw the end of this one coming. During COVID-19 I'm finding/reading a lot of classic authors, one of whom is Mary Roberts Rinehart. She gets credit for "the butler did it." She also gets credit for the had-I-but-known approach to mysteries. There was only one instance of the several nods in this direction that caused me to finally roll my eyes. What I enjoyed about reading The Swimming Pool in 2020 was seeing the aftermath of the effects of the 1929 Great Crash on a previously wealthy and prestigious NYC family. The story isn't about the loss of their wealth. That's just background information. In the early 1950's, the Great Crash of 1929 was just something that happened to them and everyone else they know. But I'm reading in 2020 while watching COVID-19 impact the wealth of the world again. At some point COVID-19 will be just something that happened to us and everyone else we know. It will be over and we will have recovered. I like these Rinehart books as a way to watch the world change. I read Agatha Christie's Miss Marple books with that same sense of watching the world change during the same time frame -- before WWI to well after WWII. Rinehart's Americans seem more optimistic to me that Christie/Marple's English. Rinehart writes well. If you enjoy well written mysteries, I think these are worth your time. ... show more

  • Good read
I like stories set in NYC in this time period. Good whodunit but not entirely believable. Who strolls around at night when there's a killer on the loose?

Great mystery right to the very end! Kept me guessing from one chapter to the next, and I couldnโ€™t put it down. Loved it!

  • Excellent, like all Rinehart Mysteries
Mary Roberts Rinehart's mysteries are wonderful. They're creative, clean, and hard to predict. In this one a body turns up in the pool, which obviously couldn't have anything to do with the people who live there. Or could it? Why else is one sister keeping herself locked (literally) in her room? Who is she afraid of? Does she have a guilty conscience? I won't spoilthe plot, but it's an excellent, well-written read. ... show more

  • Life & death after the Crash
The Maynard family lost their fortune in the crash of 1929. Mr. Maynard fairly promptly shot himself. His wife kept up appearances by marrying daughter Judith to a multi-millionaire. When the story opens, the formidable Mrs. Maynard only survives in an imposing oil painting. We find ourselves at The Birches, the old Maynard country house in Westchester, still grand but thoroughly dilapidated. Twenty-eight-year-old Lois is living there with her older brother Phil. He's an underachieving lawyer; she's writing crime fiction and just getting by. The oldest sister Ann is living in genteel poverty with a husband and children. Judith, the rich, famous, fast-living beauty of the family, is about to get a divorce. Spoiled first by her mother, then by her husband, Judith is not a family favorite. When she decides to stay at The Birches, that's it for peace and quiet. She moves into the best room, and has her windows nailed shut and new bolts put on her door. She acts like a person in terror of her life. Not long after, the dead body of a woman who looks rather like Judith is found floating in the pool. This is only the beginning of a plot rich in murder, blackmail, concussions, gunshot wounds and a great variety of deceptions and misapprehensions. Lois does some amateur detecting that only succeeds in making her look suspicious. On the plus side, she gets romantically involved with the manly Irish policeman who finally solves the case. Other interesting characters include a hen who's also in love with the policeman - and a teenage nephew who's thrilled to be in the thick of a murder case and won't go home. This really is a fun read, with a nice vintage aura. ... show more

  • Good reading!
Rinehart is a classic mystery writer who cannot write a dud. All the books I've read by her so far hold my interest and transport me to the 1920"s-30"s. Even though there is a sameness about her books - which I find enjoyable - her stories are so well developed and intriguing that I can't wait to get back to them. (I do limit myself to fiction at bedtime, and when I can't sleep). The Swimming Pool has tons of family angst, a little romance, and twists and turns galore. ... show more
