Description

Few people realize how sophisticated and intelligent bats are. Merlin Tuttle knows, and he has stopped at nothing to find and protect them on every continent they inhabit. Sharing highlights from a lifetime of adventure and discovery, Tuttle takes us to the frontiers of bat research to show that frog- eating bats can identify frogs by their calls, that some bats have social sophistication similar to that of higher primates, and that bats have remarkable memories. Bats also provide enormous benefits by eating crop pests, pollinating plants, and carrying seeds needed for reforestation. They save farmers billions of dollars annually and are essential to a healthy planet. Tuttle’s account forever changes the way we see these poorly understood yet fascinating creatures. “Grips and doesn't let go.” — Wall Street Journal “It’s a terrific read.” — Huffington Post “A whirlwind adventure story and a top- shelf natural history page-turner.” — Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus “One of the best, most interesting books I’ve ever read.” — Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs Read more

  • Great insights

Great book about wonderful animals.

  • a wonderful look at studying bats as well as the life of a nature photographer
Format: Paperback
I was attracted to this book because I was researching bats. This book was about Tuttle’s career of studying and photographing bats around the world. His work brings to reality the important work these mammals play in maintaining the ecological balance of nature, both as pest control and as spreading seeds. Things I liked about this book. This a great book of the adventure stories Merlin has lived in his life studying bats. It is also a wonderful story of finding his purpose in life as a teenager and having the gumption to live it out. Why you should read this book This book brings you into a greater appreciation of how every creature plays a part in the order and maintenance of our universe. It will also give a greater insight into what is behind the beautiful wildlife photos and videos you enjoy. This book lived up to the back cover copy by showing examples of all the items and concepts hinted at on the back cover. ... show more

  • While it was fun and interesting to read
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book because I was doing a multi-genre large project for my college english class and my subject was going to be about bat conservation. The book was very interesting for learning about bats but not necessarily for research purposes. What was not clear to me (perhaps it was my fault, was this was a collection of mostly stories about his past escapades. While it was fun and interesting to read, but I bought it more for real current statistics and information, not old stories. If you want to read a book about funny stories about studying bats, then this is great. Yes, it does go into a lot of scientic information about the studies, because it was not current information, I couldn't use much for my research. So if you want a research book this is probably not the best. I got an A+ on my assigment but it was due to information I gathered elsewhere. I do know a heck of a lot about bats now, though! ... show more

  • Bats
Format: Kindle
I loved this book. I have met Dr. Tuttle and he is a kind, very dedicated, engaging advocate for bats, that truly have been misunderstood. This account of his lifelong pursuit to change our perceptions of the world of bats to our delight and economic prosperity is frankly exciting and filled with his worldwide adventures encountered along with teams of scientists, volunteers, benefactors, and politicians who are actively researching, promoting and changing for the better, through persistence, the fate of these lovely creatures. It would be a great introduction to conservation for children old enough to appreciate the message and for anyone who wishes to learn how to bring others to an understanding of the need for conservation measures. ... show more

  • The Real Truth About Bats
Format: Kindle
If you've grown up being afraid of bats or if you are a big fan, this is the book for you. Merlin Tuttle became fascinated with bats when, as a teenager, he discovered a bat cave on his property. He since became one of the leading bat experts in the world and one of the first to protect these valuable creatures from destruction. He was the main driver for protecting the famous bat colony of the Austin Congress Avenue bridge. Much like the monster in Frankenstein, these creatures have been sought out and destroyed because of fear fueled by ignorance and misinformation. The truth is, bats are essential to the environment. They eat bugs that are detrimental to crops. In Texas alone, they can eat up to 100 tons of insects in one night. They pollinate more flowers than hummingbirds, including ones that only bloom at night. Those are just of few of the fascinating facts I learned from this very engaging book. Tuttle is a good storyteller, and after reading this book, I am definitely on Team Bat. ... show more

  • Read this if you love bats and even if you don't
Format: Hardcover
This was one of the most delightful books I've read. The main point of interest is of course the bats. This isn't a biology textbook, but you will learn a lot about different species of bats, especially vampire bats which get their own detailed chapter. The other major aspect is conservation efforts, and it's fascinating to see how those have changed over the years with new technologies and resources. It's also a bit of a travel book, as the author goes to various locations around the world in pursuit of helping bats. Throw in a sprinkling of political drama and media sensationalism (not polemical, just describing hurdles to overcome), and there ought to be something in here for everyone! What struck me the most while reading was just how much the author was able to accomplish simply by talking to people. Rather than screech and holler, Tuttle took the time to really understand the perspective of people who were causing harm to bats and worked to help them. In doing so, he not only greatly advanced conservation efforts, but also turned many "enemies" into great champions for the bats. It's an important lesson to learn. ... show more
