The North Face Surge book bag is certainly an upgrade from the previous backpack I owned, which was the original North Face Hot Shot from 2007. The build quality feels tolerable. The additional space and storage certainly comes in handy because I do have a large amount of items I carry with me for my daily commute. I will nitpick the water bottle pouches being slightly high for me since I personally like to keep a pack of gum, keys and my in-ear headphones case in those pockets for easy access, but I've grown used to it. Nothing major. A feature I wish this new backpack would have had were the internal sleeves in the bottom of the backpack from the previous generation where the waist belts were located. You could easily slide the belts inside to give it a nice clean look, and you wouldn't also have to worry about the straps flopping everywhere, whether the belt was clipped or not. Overall, I enjoy having this new pack. I believe it was worth the purchase since I desperately needed an upgrade! ... show more

It has the right size and number of pockets too! Not too hard on my back even when it is full of stuff! As I get older I tend to forget things I place in various pockets and then panic at the destination that I forgot them. Sturdy and easy to maneuver.     • Great EDC backpack!
I've used this for about 3 months now as my EDC backpack. It goes to work with me daily as well as on my weekend adventures. It's a solid backpack with tons of pockets to help you sort your gear, whatever that may be. My one gripe with it is the width of the main compartment. It's very narrow. So, while you have tons of places to put smaller items to help out with organization, there's not a lot of space in the "main" pocket of the backpack to store larger items. For example, I pack lunch for myself daily, and it takes some wiggling around to get the lunch bag to fit in there. The side pockets are nice and will accommodate up to a 36oz water bottle with no issues. I liked the fact that they weren't completely made out of mesh material since that's the first place every other backpack I have owned has failed me over the years. Some reviews mentioned that this backpack can sit up on its own without having to learn against something, but that hasn't been the case for me. ... show more

I absolutely love this backpack...except for ONE THING. The space of one pocket take up the space of another pocket. Upon first look, the pockets all seem very roomy. however, start packing items the bag and you soon realize that all the pockets are fighting for the same space. You just have to be extra strategic on how you pack, and what you pack where. I wish they can some extra fabric in more places to alleviate this problem. Overall though it's an amazing bag. the padding is more on the firmer side which i like because it doesn't seem like the padding will wear out as fast. the laptop compartment is amazing. super cushy and a generous false bottom with a bit of structure in the back panel makes me feel very confident my laptop is protected. I wish they gave just a touch more room in the tablet sleeve though. And the organizational components of the bag are extremely useful. Love it love it love it ... show more
