  • A great book about luxury hotels
Format: Hardcover
I have been scouring the internet for books about luxury hotels. Most of what I could find have been coffee table books that focus on a single hotel or hotel group. For example, such books exist for AMAN, Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula, and Rosewood. They are usually self-published or come from the usual gambit that includes names such as Rizzoli and Assouline (the latter book was also published by Monocle and is in my estimation the best one among this lot). What I wanted was a book that showcased a variety of such hotels across multiple brands. This book provides exactly that—an expertly curated selection of the best 100 hotels (and you can rest assured on the selection, the Monocle taste never falters). Also included are more in depth profiles as well as words on how to start and successfully run your own hotel. Whether you are someone who travels internationally twice a month or someone who has never travelled before, you will find great joy, and perhaps even some inspiration, in the pages of this book. By the standards of Monocle, I have never stayed in a luxury hotel—and probably will never, at least not for a long time. Still, I enjoy books such as this one to help me get if only an iota closer to what that experience might be like. However, I can imagine the seasoned traveler with his overflowing stack of AMAN luggage tags and battle worn RIMOWA classic cabin getting just as much out of this book as I did. In my estimation, this book also has high rereadability. I understand that the Monocle brand is all about the pride of eclecticism and being a worldly citizen but sometimes I wish this book also showcased some of the more flashy, gaudy, and ostentatiously expensive hotels as well—something I am sure Wallpaper would have made sure to do if they wrote a similar book. But alas, Monocle does love their traditional ryokan that has no website and can only be booked via phone (and they speak no English). So expect to see a lot of those such places. My only gripe about the book is that it did not include more of the "obnoxious" places such as Four Seasons, Mandarin Orientals, and Peninsulas—places where people go solely to throw their weight around. The Leading Hotels of the World recently published a collection of three books about their properties. I have not read any of them but they seem to be also quite good. I suspect what will be detailed in those pages will be a little more ostentatious than what Monocle has presented. For those with beyond a fleeting interest in luxury travel, I would combine this book with any number of the aforementioned coffee table books (especially see "The World of Rosewood", also published by Monocle); the other hotel books published by gestalten; and, of course, the Wallpaper City guides—which, if I must say, are still better than their Monocle counterpart. I also love the YouTube channel "Lartisien". ... show more

  • Inspiring
Format: Hardcover
I will have this book for the rest of my life. It lit a fire within and I found inspiration on every single page. There was an obvious absence of US motels and hideaways which I think was a sad oversight, but overall it really filled me with a sense of coziness.
