Description

Patrick Mitchell is an academic and has had a lifelong love of open fires. He built his first fireplace at the age of 15. After gaining a degree in physics he continued to work on fireplaces of differing ages and noticed that recently installed examples rarely perform as well as those that date from before 1950. This prompted him to study the principles of heat and air flow in fireplaces and to research their history. There is little information available on good fireplace and chimney design which might account for the decline in fireplace performance, and prompted him to write this book. With tables and charts to explain how to design, install and build real, domestic fires. By understanding how open fireplaces work, the reader might even be able to diagnose problems with existing installation. This is essential reading for architects, builders, restorers and ambitious DIY people. Read more

  • Ok book
Format: Paperback
Not what I was expecting. This book does not have the details for chimney design that I was expecting when looking at the table of contents. It is more of a history of fireplaces types.

  • A great read for those who want to build a good fireplace
Format: Paperback
It is a thin book with black and white photos, but it accomplishes its purpose. It was written by an English physicist and the main theme is a detailed overview of the aerodynamic of smoke and how to build an efficient open fireplace. Each section of a fireplace is presented and explained. Tables are provided with the measurements of each part for fireplaces of various dimensions. The introduction, explaining the evolution of open indoor fireplaces throughout history is also very interesting. ... show more

  • All the Design Information needed for an open fireplace
Format: Paperback
This book has all of the engineering design information needed to understand how an open fireplace operates. There aren't any photos of beautifully executed fireplaces but it explains all of the details needed to properly design and build a foundation, the firebox, and the chimney. There are rudimentary line-work illustrations of design elements. It reads much like a specification so as an Engineer I love it. For those beautiful photos of finished fireplaces that we all need for inspiration I recommend that you look at masonry design books, or search online. To design the geometry of an open fireplace and select the materials from ground level to chimney pot this is the best source of guidance. The author spent 50 years studying and building them and this book is his summary! I purchased my copy from a UK vendor so I'm not listed as an Amazon verified purchaser. ... show more

  • good content could improve printing
Format: Paperback
good technical content. its a book that deserves better printing (color pictuares, paper quality). even do the title states its focus on open fires, it would be nice for a next edition to adress massonry fireplaces. also would be nice further investigation on untraditional fireplaces (like 360 open fires). but thats all just nice to have. ... show more
