  • Perfect for a reluctant reader!
This book changed how my son feels about reading. He'd always been a reluctant reader. But this book showed him that he could read something fun all by himself. My son loves all things mystery.. so this was a perfect book in this series for him to start with. This book is easy enough to read to give him confidence but not so easy that it feels too young for him. It includes a tutorial on 'How to read a graphic novel' and has a glossary at the end too. When my son was stuck on a word he didn't know, he could still understand what was going on in the story because of the illustrations, which then would sometimes help him figure out the word he was stuck on. This book is in AR bookfinder as a 1.8. Which I believe is exactly right. Oh and my son just finished 1st grade and is an average reader (just in case this helps you know if this book is right for you child). ... show more

  • Great starter graphic novel
Great intro for a 5 year old to graphic novels, and more wholesome than Captain Underpants or Dogman (no poop jokes).

  • Not at that price
I paid 5 and change for the kindle edition. My 4 year old solved it once the problem was known without getting to the clues. The 6 year old read a few pages and got board. I would recommend this book if it was under $3. Otherwise I hope we can find another mystery which can hold his interest.

  • This exciting mystery of the missing Monster Card is an excellent introductory venture into the graphic novel!
Ethan and Zack loved to play Monster Cards. They would spread them over Zack's bedspread every Saturday to check out what they had. Zack wasn't into trading, but they had a lot of fun. Ethan got lucky when he bought some Monster Cards and he found "The most priceless Monster Card you could get." He was sooooo excited, he could hardly wait to show Zack the special card. He tucked it safely in his coat pocket and called up to tell Zack he was coming over. Ethan had his knapsack slung over his shoulder, smiled, and waved when he saw Zack. "Hey Zack!" They spread their Monster Cards all over the living room floor and when Ethan told him of his big discovery, Zack said, "No way! Let me see it." It was time for the big unveiling, but when Ethan searched his pocket it was nowhere to be found. There was nothing left to do, except turn into a couple of detectives. Ethan was very upset, but would the two junior detectives be able to solve the mystery of the missing Monster Card? This exciting mystery of the missing Monster Card is an excellent introductory venture into the graphic novel. Many reluctant readers love the visuals graphic novels have and often gravitate toward this format. In this particular book, the young reader is introduced to the format and receives instructions on "How to Read a Graphic Novel." The mystery aspect is appealing to its intended age group, the four to eight-year-old, and has a very interesting story line that will hold his or her attention. The graphics are clean and will not overwhelm the younger reader. In the back of the book is a glossary, discussion questions and suggested writing prompts for homeschool or classroom use. ... show more
