Description

Edwin Salamand has lived on a farm his whole life. The problem? He's not very good at farming, or anything involving the outdoors, for that matter. When his salamander farm goes belly up, he decides to move to a nearby city. A deal too good to be true goes awry, and he ends up with a dusty old bookshop filled to the brim with unassuming level one skill tomes. Pamphlets, really. It's not the most exciting windfall, but it's a path to an honest life, one that Edwin is confident he can handle. Because running a bookshop for beginners has got to be safe and simple, right? It turns out Edwin's little shop is sitting smack dab in the center of not three, but four magical schools for people that actually enjoy getting soil underneath their fingernails. Also known as, adventurers. As eager warriors-in-training, alongside the occasional rowdy orc, descend upon Edwin's humble little shop, he's going to find himself unexpectedly teaching lessons big and small. Maybe learning them, too, because sometimes it's not the size of the book that matters, but how hard you throw it... The Level One Bookshop is a cozy LitRPG-lite story that blends slice-of- life episodes and the occasional bookworm-worthy adventure. Read more

  • Wonderful cozy story. Excellent work.
Format: Kindle
This is a story of a young man who rises from a failed business to take on a new challenge, growing in character throughout. By his honor, honesty, and courage he achieves success in the most meaningful way - the respect and support of true friends. No stats, no grand battles, no swearing, & no sex. Instead, a well-written narrative that is interesting & entertaining, with a little comedy thrown in. Highly recommended for those who enjoy cozy slice-of-life. ... show more

  • Good read but not my cup of tea
Format: Kindle
There are a lot of positives about this story. The author carries the drama and intrigue through till the end, for one. It’s a compelling story where honesty and hard work pay off. If you are looking for a cozy read though, this book may not be what you had in mind. It wasn’t for me, anyway. The plot centers around the main character having to deal with navigating a corrupt legal system paid for by his biggest competitor. It was actively stressful and the protagonist’s mostly passive handling of the situations did not make it better. So, bottom line, it’s a good book with lots going for it, but don’t expect to feel a bunch of warm and fuzzies while reading about this bookshop. ... show more

  • A well done, if a bit formulaic, cozy fantasy.
Format: Kindle
This was a nice reworking of a standard theme. Edwin is working on a second chance. He has bought a rundown bookstore and needs to make it a success. Almost immediately he meets two helpful people and an antagonistic competitor. The story is a series of increasingly serious difficulties and small successes. His earnest character is what carries him through. The writing, while not inspired, is workmanlike and easily carries the reader through the story. The proofreading is above par for KU books as is the interior consistency. I do disagree with the author’s choice of boiling tea instead of steeping it, but tastes vary. The surprise revelation during Edwin’s hearing felt a bit contrived, but the actual ending satisfactory, even if its foreshadowing was a bit obvious. This is a true cozy; gaining friends, overcoming obstacles, learning and growing without any nail biting confrontations or battles. I’d read this again if I wanted a quiet read on a rainy day. ... show more

  • Cozy but also irrational
Format: Kindle
So, the book was fine unless you actually think about stuff. Like... why was the villain the villain? And did the ex-mercenary gal just basically decide to start working for the protagonist for free? The whole -you need a cozy tea nook- and suddenly she is outfitting it... and nothing discussing *WHERE* these books are coming from/being supplied by and how fast they can be supplied... I've worked in a specialty bookstore. This one sounds cozy enough but the constant bureaucracy, corruption, and over the top villain made no sense. And for a theoretically cozy book, took me out of the world and kept me annoyed. Hopefully the next plot is about something actually cozy and not some unexpectedly obsessive not-even-an-actual-competitor shopkeeper forcing himself into every scene. Plot ideas if you need them: Trent realizing that his necromancy can also restore damaged books... Mercenary lady's own shop failing because she was working for free at the bookstore. The supplier of books having a shortage due to scribes going on strike for better pay. That one really nice Healer gal leveling up and dating Trent. (Please!) This may have been written with AI assistance, there is just so much that doesn't make sense. Not going to continue the series. ... show more

  • perfectly cozy read
Format: Kindle
I like the characters & the magic. Books & teas & not overly complicated but still engaging & endearing. I honestly am mildly cranky there isn't a second book yet. Will purchase book 2 as soon as I see it. Read on KU, plan to go ahead & buy it as soon as I finish my review--especially because I haven't been finishing all of my KU books this week. Some were absolute swill. This was one of the better KU books I read this week--& I read a lot. Don't just read on KU & actually buy it so maybe the author will hurry up & do a book 2 faster. ... show more

  • Sweet, pleasant story
Format: Kindle
Not a grand swashbuckling adventure, rather a cozy story of growth and friendship. Edwin is a likeable young man with strong moral convictions that guide him in his journey. I quite liked this tale.

  • Nice and cozy
Format: Kindle
I didn't know much much I needed the cozy LitRPG genre until recently but it has helped me a lot mentally. "The level one book shop" is a great addition to the genre! It has a nice mix wholesome storytelling and nice world building. Most importantly for me, it introduces the characters in a pace that doesn't confuse you and that's nice to see. Looking forward to book 2! ... show more

  • cozy and now in need of tea
Format: Kindle
Love the little adventure he went on. From finding found family. To staying true to his word. I am interested in seeing where this story goes. And to see what he can get with his new class. All in all.. loved it and could definitely use some tea now.
