Description

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER •NAMED ONE OF THE BEST NEW COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Epicurious • EATER • Stained Page • Infatuation • Spruce Eats • Publisher’s Weekly • Food52 • Toronto StarThe dazzling debut cookbook from Joanne Lee Molinaro, the home cook and spellbinding storyteller behind the online sensation @thekoreanveganJoanne Lee Molinaro has captivated millions of fans with her powerfully moving personal tales of love, family, and food. In her debut cookbook, she shares a collection of her favorite Korean dishes, some traditional and some reimagined, as well as poignant narrative snapshots that have shaped her family history. As Joanne reveals, she’s often asked, “How can you be vegan and Korean?” Korean cooking is, after all, synonymous with fish sauce and barbecue. And although grilled meat is indeed prevalent in some Korean food, the ingredients that filled out bapsangs on Joanne’s table growing up—doenjang (fermented soybean paste), gochujang (chili sauce), dashima (seaweed), and more—are fully plant-based, unbelievably flavorful, and totally Korean. Some of the recipes come straight from her childhood: Jjajangmyun, the rich Korean-Chinese black bean noodles she ate on birthdays, or the humble Gamja Guk, a potato-and-leek soup her father makes. Some pay homage: Chocolate Sweet Potato Cake is an ode to the two foods that saved her mother’s life after she fled North Korea. The Korean Vegan Cookbook is a rich portrait of the immigrant experience with life lessons that are universal. It celebrates how deeply food and the ones we love shape our identity. Read more

  • Part Cooking Part History
My wife and I love this book. So far, we've made two of the recipes and they're fantastic. The storytelling is a nice addition and the food photographs are mouth watering. Here's a picture of the KKANPOONG TOGU (Spicy Crunchy Garlic Tofu) that we made.

  • Excellent cookbook
I am so excited about this cookbook!! I generally use online recipes way more than cookbooks, but this is a great way to get someone to branch out into Korean cuisine. I've already made the boricha (barley tea), fishy sauce, and date and ginger tea. You will need to go out and buy some ingredients if you're not already making a lot of Korean food in your house, but once you have a nice base of ingredients you can make anything in the book. Highly highly recommend!! ... show more

  • The author understands vegetarianism.
Interesting to read the author’s approach to vegetarian dishes that were not traditionally vegetarian Korean.

  • Beautiful cookbook with easy to difficult recipes
This is a beautiful cookbook with several recipes I would like to try. For me, many of the ingredients will need to be ordered online at a price higher than a grocery store, as these items aren’t carried in local stores (one area I live in is in SW FL, the other a northern metropolitan area). But, if I choose correctly and plan ahead, I’m sure I will have delicious meals. I look forward to really digging into this book. There are great explanations of Korean traditional ingredients, which I appreciated. ... show more

  • Beautiful Cookbook
Normally, I don't read stories included with recipes but these were so beautiful and tied in with the dishes perfectly. I haven't come across a recipe that seems too difficult yet, or ingredients that are too hard to find. I look forward to making all the recipes.

  • Great Recipes
Well I anxiously waited for this cookbook. It was initially supposed to come out sooner. When it didn’t, I promptly emailed Joanne to see if I missed it or what. She was kind enough to email me back and let me know the projected release date and said her publisher wanted MORE recipes. (Not surprised. She’s amazing) I’ve been following Joanne for a while on IG, and I so appreciated her sharing her versions of these classic Korean recipes. I am a Korean American, and the one thing I sorely regret, is not learning how to cook from my mother. I learned on my own so I never really knew how to cook Korean food. It was quite intimidating. This cookbook does a good job of giving both the experienced cook and the novice cook good instruction. I’ve made quite a few of these recipes and they have all been amazing. Each time I say “this is not like my moms… definitely better.” LOL. I wanted to write my review now, after I had made quite a few of recipes. I also chose now because I had heard this cookbook got a one star review based on availability of ingredients. I must say, I lived in big cities all my life and now live in the country. I agree that yes, when you’re in a small town like mine, it could be more difficult to find these ingredients. But isn’t that for anything that isn’t classic “American” type ingredients? Did someone really buy a Korean cookbook and think they didn’t need some Korean ingredients? I mean… I live waaaayyy out in the country with one neighbor in sight and I can get ahold of the ingredients I need if I really want them. (Hello online orders). I don’t think it’s fair to rate someone’s hard work so poorly when the issue is a user error, rather than one of the product. If you’re unhappy with your own lack of will to complete the task you set for yourself, be disappointed in yourself more than anyone else. This cookbook is great and I truly feel blessed for it. I miss Korean food so much and there are I think 2 restaurants in my town and surprisingly enough, not Korean! LOL. Anyways, wonderful cookbook, and good recipes. She has a way of Koreanizing dishes and is very creative. If you have the fiery pasta, it reminds you a lot of tteokboki which is amazing for me because I can’t get rice cakes here! Love it! I felt that it was necessary to offset the negativity of that one star review because that’s simply not fair. This cookbook was clearly very well put together and beautifully done. Don’t hate. Appreciate. Thanks, Joanne for everything. ... show more
