  • Family black sheep (1925 : Fletcher)
This old-fashioned suspense tale starts with a village romance between young aspiring lawyer Ben Heckitt, whose much older sister, the highly respectable, somewhat stern Keziah, has raised him from childhood, and even younger Pepita Marigold, the pretty, flirtatious daughter of an old sea captain and a long-dead Spanish mother. Ben and his sister live in a big old house by the sea that has been their family's home for nine generations, while Pepita lives with her father in a small village house. It's a bad day for Ben and Keziah when their long-lost Uncle Joe, their mother's brother, unexpectedly turns up in Middlebourne after an absence of nineteen years. Keziah remembers him as a smuggler and a rogue; she had hoped never to see or hear from him again. Ben had never even known he had an uncle. That night, after hearing horrible screams from the direction of an old gallows, a grisly seaside landmark, they come upon the still warm body of a disreputable looking stranger, hanging from a noose. Keziah has a terrible feeling that Uncle Joe was somehow involved, though he was supposedly in bed asleep at the time. By morning, however, Uncle Joe has taken his bag and departed as abruptly as he arrived. Inspector Cherry, the young Scotland Yard detective sent to investigate the murder, learning of Ben's legal aspirations, enlists him as local guide and unofficial assistant. When a wealthy neighbor finds an incredibly valuable ancient Chinese vase missing, likely stolen the same night as the murder, it seems the two crimes must be connected. Ben goes to London with the Inspector in hopes of picking up Uncle Joe's trail there, but without success. Back in Middlebourne, Ben feels he's had enough experience as a detective to follow up a clue on his own. This turns out to be a big mistake. Pepita, less confident, tries to warn him, but in vain. Beneath certain old houses in seaside villages like Middlebourne and its neighboring towns lie deep cellars and networks of underground passageways, the haunts of smugglers for generations, into which a man can disappear never to be seen again. Fletcher was very popular in his day, publishing over one hundred mysteries. I've read a dozen or so, and some stand the test of time better than others, with plots that are complex and plausible enough to hold one's attention. This particular story, though, with it's smugglers' lair, monastery ruins, exotic treasures, and mysterious Eastern servant set on revenge, recycles gothic and sensationalist motifs and lacks somewhat in originality. Still, you may enjoy the picturesque settings and colorful minor characters. (It's explained on p. 133 that the "Kang-he" vase is really "K'ang-hsi." Today it would be known as Kangxi (1662-1722) and a single vase might sell for more than a million dollars.) ... show more
