    • The Grande Finale to Scorsese’s Mob Epics
The Irishman is, quite simply, a Masterpiece. When it was released last year many people were put off by its slow pace and epic length so the film didn’t get anywhere near the recognition it really deserved. In Comparison with Scorsese’s other Mob films such as Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Casino, this one is not nearly as fast and flashy and it moves much more leisurely. But that actually works perfectly with this material and the story Scorsese is telling. The Irishman is much deeper and more melancholy than those films - but don’t worry - it still has plenty of the action and drama that those other other films are known for. It is a story about friendship ...betrayal..and ultimately ....supreme regret. Deniro Pacino and Pesci are all absolutely Magnificent- as you would expect. As Frank Sheeran, Deniro begins by playing his typical gangster persona throughout the early part of the film , then as Frank gets older and the drama unfolds, he brings incredible resonance, regret and sadness. There are some sequences here that are among the finest and most powerful of his career. Pacino is sensational as Jimmy Hoffa with an electrifying performance that really captures the charisma that made him one of the most powerful figures in the Country for many years. Joe Pesci returns to acting in his first role in many years as Russell Bufalino - and of course just casually delivers the best performance of his career. On the surface he seems to be playing a father figure and mentor to Sheeran- but underneath he is as Menacing and as cold blooded as any character he’s ever played. Instead of the fiery gun blazing of Tommy DeSimone from Goodfellas, this time he is QUIETLY a killer -who leaves the dirty work to others. And Pesci seems to relish it. Stephen Graham is also a standout as Tony Pro, Hoffas main rival and he steals just about every scene he is in. As always with Scorsese’s films,The music is just great, perfectly capturing the different time periods the films story takes us through. The films length is formidable, but as you watch the story and Scorsese takes you into his world - you wont even notice it. The Irishman really feels like a Grande Finale to all the other Mob films Scorsese has done - a perfect conclusion to the story he began with Mean Streets and then took through Goodfellas and Casino. This is also likely the last time you will see these talents working together at the very top of their craft like this... so it truly is a film to be treasured. ... show more

    • A genuine masterpiece of film acting and storytelling.
Do not be swayed by the running time...once you get into the movie's rhythm it just sinks its hooks into you where you can't look away. Loved Parasite, but this should have gotten the Oscar for best picture. Easily top 5 of Scorsese's filmography. Top 5 of Pacino's work. Top 5 of De Niro's work. Best Pesci performance of his entire career. And the silent heat seeking missile of Anna Paquin's glares who hardly has any lines is not only the moral center but nearly steals the show. Just keeps getting better after each viewing. Required viewing if you love movies and great acting. ... show more

    • Almost perfection
This is a very good movie. I’ve watched it twice and picked up some subtle things that I missed the first time which made it much more clear. It’s almost like a curtain call for Scorsese and his characters and concludes the end of an era. There won’t be any more movies made like this in Hollywood as the demographics have died out just like the main characters. Just add Goodfellas and Casino to the mix and you have a perfect trifecta.     • This is really a great film.
Two-dise aspect ratio 1.85:1 by the Criterion Collection, I don't think its a 4K resolution even though it says it is because it plàys in my regular Samsung Blu-ray player. Its a Blu-ray dise for sure. First dise is the movie, second one is the special features behind the scenes look at the production of making The Irishman and features interviews with director Martin Scorese and numerous members of his cast and crew. Also comes with a small book called (I heard you paint houses) based on the movie. I think there was alot of work put into making this film. I'm really happy with it. It came on time in great condition. ... show more

    • Scorsese's Later Life Masterpiece
This film is NOT Goodfellas and NOT Casino. If that is what you are looking for, you will be disappointed. In fact, it is the anthesis of those films. The Irishman is richly textured, often slow, quiet and contemplative in tone and by the end, emotionally devastating. The performances are uniformly excellent. Scorsese's direction is far more subdued, depending more on composition than visual pyrotechnics. The Criterion packaging is excellent with beautiful cover art and the extras fascinating. Only a Scorsese commentary could have made this package better. ... show more

    • Really Good movie.
It's good to see the old actors from the movie "Goodfellas" back together again, except Ray Liota is missing. This was a serious movie, the men didn't play. if it's your time to go, then you go. .. One thing I want to note. the movie initially would not play in my Blu-Ray player"Samsung". but I found out that I needed to update it by connecting to the internet, once I did that, the movie played fine.. ... show more

What can I say? This is an amazing production, and every aspect is superbly done. Who but Robert De Niro could make you empathize with someone who murders people--even his friends--for a living? Highly recommended, if you haven 't already seen it. (I would note that the disc would not play on my Samsung Blu-ray player, but fortunately it does work on my Sony.) ... show more

    • Similar in tone to Goodfellas
The movie is about 3 1/2 hrs long. Interesting film, similar to Goodfellas & Casino about the mob involvement with Hoffa. I have always felt DeNiro was a arrogant & belligerent person, but that doesn’t take away from his acting. I do believe they could trim 30 minutes off the plot & without cutting the substance. Some scenes were painfully overlong. Joe Pesci looked old to me compared to My Cousin Vinnie. Very low key & looked tired. Al Pacino still comes off as an Italian mobster instead of Hoffa and as a matter of fact, at times Pacino & DeNiro looked very similar in hairstyles, so you have to look close to see which was which. All in all, it was a fine movie based supposedly on a mobsters memoirs who killed Hoffa. Whether true or not, who knows? It’s one explanation & worth watching. ... show more
