In the movie, Ramius sets the plot in motion when he murders his political adviser, burns his orders, and steers his sub Red October towards American waters, hoping to defect Robbed of much of the book's Cold War appeal by the time of it's release, the movie was nonetheless embraced by American audiences; it was among the ten highest-grossing movies of 1990.

    • One of the most entertaining action films you can watch
This is a fascinating action film adapted from a fascinating book by Tom Clancy. Even though it takes place back during the Cold War between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R., the film is gripping and will hold anybody's interest right from the opening scene to the final scene. Bonus: it's a pure action film and can be watched by the whole family. The plot has been modified from the novel by Tom Clancy and slightly simplified to work better on the screen. Briefly, a Russian submarine commander, Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), plans to defect to the United States; the Russian government tries to stop him by trying to sink him and they convince the American government that Ramius is a rogue commander who wants to nuke America. Jack Ryan, a C.I.A. analyst (Alec Baldwin), is convinced that Ramius is actually trying to defect and winds up going to extreme lengths to assist Ramius. The cast was superbly chosen. Sean Connery is the Lithuanian-born sub commander (a perfect performance - and he has an interesting accent in the film); Alec Baldwin is Jack Ryan (interesting to see him when he was young and thin); James Earl Jones as James Greer the C.I.A. head (great character part); Sam Neill as Borodin the 2nd in command of the Red October (another great character part); Scott Glenn as Bart Mancuso, an American sub commander (and his portrayal makes you hope ALL American sub commanders are like him); Richard Jordan as the National Security Adviser (makes you almost like politicians); Tim Curry as the Russian medical officer (wonderful character part- who knew Tim Curry was really this good?); Courtney Vance as "Jonesy", the American sonar operator (a pitch-perfect performance); Fred Thompson (yes, THAT Fred Thompson before Law & Order) in a really good part as an American Admiral. You can't beat this cast and their performances. The scenes that take place inside the subs are good, but the technology you see are strictly Hollywood - the computer systems and controls are a bit cartoonish - but that's okay - this film is pure entertainment. For years I had the VHS tape and snapped up this Blu-ray version and I am impressed with it's magnificent quality.     • Sean Connery in a McTierman mobie adapted from Tom Clancy's novel........What else!!!
Great movie from tom Clancy eponym novel The only critic I could think of is the lack of feminine figures but the boys are all fabulous actors...all together a great movie. As a suggestion, people interested by cold war movies should consider "The Russia house" also featuring Sean Connery

Excellent Movie. A huge technology was shown in this film. Good tactics in submarine technology was also presented. Excellent choice of acters.

    • Still the best of the Jack Ryan feature films.
Now that I have seen the 'Jack Ryan' first season on Amazon Prime, I would go so far as to say the John Krasinski is my favorite Jack Ryan. (I do not know that I had ever really considered whether or not I even had a favorite Jack Ryan actor, but after I had finished the TV series, I was asked by a friend how Krasinski compares to the four actors who have come before him in the films.) As for 'The Hunt for Red October' I would still say that it is easily my favorite of the Tom Clancy film adaptations. To be fair to Alec Baldwin, since we only get to see him in the one film (in which he does solid work portraying the character, but we do not see enough of him to be able to make a fair assessment as to how good of a Jack Ryan he is (or could have been, had he played the character once or twice more). Sean Connery's charismatic and commanding performance as Marko Ramius easily overshadows Alec Baldwin's serviceable performance as Jack Ryan in this film. All in all, this 1990 film hold up considerably well in the near three decades since it was first released, and I found it to be just as enthralling to watch as I did when I first went to see it in theatres all those years ago. ... show more

    • Another timeless classic
There is something about submarine films that just attracts me, maybe it's because I was in the military or because I enjoy small spaces or both. But the plot in this movie is its greatest asset. The acting is wonderful and the cinematography tops and it will have you rooting for success in every predicament thrown at you. The only negative I can see is the acting in the scene of the Russian sailor singing the national anthem [most of the extras do not know the words]. But that's just a bump in the road to an otherwise completely enjoyable film. This was filmed in 35mm so the 4k version is also probably worth the money. Looking into that as my next purchase. I read a lot of the reviews here on amazon.com, and elsewhere on the internet, before buying this Blu-ray disk. Some of the reviews criticized the quality of the Blu-ray version of this movie. Because I love-love-love this movie, I bought it in spite of the bad reviews, since we just bought a Blu-ray player a few weeks ago. I was not disappointed in the least; in fact, I was thrilled at the video quality of the Blu-Ray presentation. I don't understand all the negative reviews! We had watched the movie on DVD, a week before we bought our Blu-ray player and new HD TV. When we hooked up the new player and TV, we decided to re-watch the DVD, just to see how it looked on the new set-up (since it was fresh on our minds, having just watched it). Although we still enjoyed the movie (as we always do), it was staggeringly disappointing to see that the DVD is non-anamorphic... it had black bands not only top and bottom, but at the sides as well. And, the video quality was not up to par (remember, I am talking about the DVD here)... grainy and sort of dust-spotted on the new HD TV. When I decided to buy the Blu-ray version, we just had to watch it again. if you're tracking my story, this was the third time we'd watched this movie in a little over a month. We were both blown away at the quality of the video, esp. since I'd read some negative reviews. The grain was fabulous, the blacks were inky but had lots of detail, the sharpness of the video throughout the tonal range was terrific, and the color was great... overall, very crisp and vibrant. The picture filled the screen from side to side, with black bands at the top (typical letterbox presentation) so we were able to enjoy the full width of the new TV. The sound was no different than it had been on the DVD, but we don't have a home theater setup with 5.1 sound (we run our sound through a very good component system with excellent speakers, but it is not surround-sound or anything like that). I think I read somewhere that the sound had been optimized for 5.1, so if you have that kind of setup, you'll enjoy the Blu-ray even more than I did. So, if you're on the fence as I was, my advice is: buy the Blu-ray disk and enjoy! I'm glad I did. ... show more

    • Great movie
I'm beginning to be sorry that Blu-Ray won. My HD-DVDs consistently play, start up quickly without a bunch of crap at the beginning, and the user interface is rather nice (Toshiba A2). Compare with my Sony BDP-300 (comparable generation player): takes forever to load, often a bunch of unskippable crap, and even though I updated the firmware last December, when I got it, it won't play Hunt for Red October. I'm downloading the May/June update to see if that makes it work, but if I have to update firmware every time a new release comes out on Blu-Ray, I'm bailing on it. Update: the commenters are somewhat right, but this is a blu-ray disk and that is a factor. Fortunately, players have improved dramatically since the original review, though I stand by my comment that the wrong one won (mainly because region coding is a joke), though as they say, this isn't really the place for it. The movie itself is one of my favorites, and in particular, I love the music. I also love how they dealt with the Russian language issue - most movies would either just have them speak english or russian with subtitles. Since a lot of the movie takes place there, and a lot of people don't like subtitles, they started that way to say "yeah, we know they're russian" and then "faded" to english. ... show more
