  • completely overlooks critical role of iodine (and other nutrients) in hormone health
This book completely overlooks iodine's critical role in hormone health, especially for women. As an MD, the author takes the usual party line of iodine deficiency not really being a problem ("because the table salt we use comes fortified with iodine" p 246). What is overlooked is the huge problem of bromine, chorine and fluoride displacing iodine in the body, aside from the fact that the amount of iodine you get from salt (if you even eat processed salt) is insufficient for good health and hormone function. Women not looking at this foundational nutritional deficiency will needlessly end up on bioidentical hormones that are just covering up the problem, not fixing it. In addition to this oversight a lot of the supplement advice is just really outdated and/or basically useless. Overlooked are excellent nutrients for women's health like nattokinase's ability to dissolve fibroids and breast cysts and cure endometriosis (there is even a highly effective patented version of this natural enzyme as a supplement for this purpose, not mentioned in this book at all). At the end of the day MDs are just woefully uneducated on holistic health. They didn't study it at all in school and their schedules are too busy to study it in any depth once they're out of school. Because medical schools are funded by the pharmaceutical industry, the principle "authority" MDs have is knowing what pharmaceutical to prescribe for a specific set of symptoms. The trend of MDs trying to be authorities in the area of natural medicine is tragically just ruining the effectiveness and power of it (and keeping you running back to your own MD, therefore keeping them in business). It's like expecting your car salesman to be an expert mechanic. It's just not what they do. ... show more

  • Negligent Advice - Be Careful!
I read through this book, and all the various hormonal imbalances, and took the quiz. Based on the results I followed a few of the recommendations for low progesterone. One of which is to take the herb called Chasteberry (1,000mg/day), which the author recommends to restore hormone balance when progesterone is low. After 4 months I noticed a significant weight gain - an inch on the hips and thighs and a couple inches around the middle! What a disappointment! I run 3 times per week and do weight training 2 times per week so this should not have happened! BEWARE of CHASTEBERRY, and beware of the fact that the author doesn't tell you about side effects. I googled it after noticing the weight gain and found plenty of websites that caution you about it. Wish the author had. What woman would knowingly take anything that could cause weight gain! ... show more

  • Keeping in mind that this was written in 2013. Worth reading. Picture from Dr. Wright book.
Update: Though this is not my #1 choice on the subject, I still refer to her book for questionnaires that help point to hormonal imbalances without having to continually test. That and nutritional information is this books strength!!! I would say this is my #2 choice book on the subject after reading 7 and countless internet information. The author was still relativity young, not menopausal, and her focus is premenopausal. There is a little more information available than 6 years ago. This was still a good read for some information on herbs and basic hormone imbalances. She does mention that Chaste Tree or Vitex is NOT for menopausal women. Since we now know vitex blocks other hormones it should only be used for a short time by people who can benefit from boosting progesterone production while blocking production of estrogen or androgens. She does a good job at pointing out that excess cortisol is a big culprit in messing with our hormone balance! I would add especially if you haven't messed up your natural ability to produce hormones by tubal ligation, hysterectomy, birth control, major stress, lack of excercise, lack of getting in the sunlight... The author gives some good natural approaches as well as mentioning bio-identical hormones but also at times leans a smidge to much toward FDA approvals and pharmaceuticals. She does also bring up the importance of adaptogens for cortisol control. One thing I would add is that Korean ginseng can raise your blood pressure, while Siberian ginseng does not. Jiaogulan was not mentioned but is my adaptogen of choice! There IS one typo/mistake about the 3 types of estrogens which we now know are actually 5 estrogens and the one that is predominant in healthy women is Estriol NOT Estradiol. Do a search about Estrogen Quotient or EQ. ... show more

  • A Shot in the Dark
I was more confused than informed. Given the complexity of hormones and symptoms and overlap of symptoms between condtions described, I didn't feel comfortable moving ahead with anything suggested. Summary: Buy a whole bunch of nutritional supplements...we'll even sell them to you for a magic cure. While I don't doubt that hormone imbalances are a significant cause of ill health, but given the complexity of hormones, this book is more of a crap shoot than a cure. The risk of self-diagnosis should be considered. ... show more

  • Fixed my night hot flashes after a horrible experience with estrogen cream
This book was recommended to me by a friend of a friend. I've been in menopause for about a year and a half and the hot flashes all night long were really messing up my sleep. I was given an estrogen cream by my gyn and within three days it caused a rash all over my legs that lasted weeks. I had to stop taking it. I'm so glad I gave this book a shot. She walks you through exactly what chapters to read and what chapters to skip based on your exact symptoms. What's even better is that she lays out steps as in what to try first, second, and third in that order. She doesn't jump right in to herbal stuff (which sometimes makes me uncomfortable). For my particular problem, step one started with basic combinations of vitamins to try. Who knew. Within a week or less I started sleeping through the night for the first time in months. I'm the first of my friends to go through meno. I will share it with all of them as they join me! ... show more
