Description

Loaded with labor and time-saving conveniences, the Hoosier cabinet was among the earliest design innovations of the modern American kitchen. This culinary workstation allowed owners to maintain an efficient and clutter-free kitchen by centralizing utensils, cookware, tools, and ingredients all the while providing a space in which to prepare the meals of the day. Bloomington-based cabinetmaker Nancy R. Hiller draws on her years of specialty cabinet making and thorough knowledge of interior design to deliver an entertaining, beautiful, and informative history of the Hoosier cabinet―revealing its influence on the development of the contemporary American home. Illustrated with original manufacturers' advertisements and sales literature―some of which is previously unpublished―as well as color and black-and-white photos, this long-overdue book on an icon of the early 20th-century kitchen will be an invaluable resource to cabinetmakers, antiques enthusiasts, and homeowners planning a period-inspired kitchen. • A Great Read
Very interesting history for someone who owns a Hoosier (I do) or is interested in the history of kitchen appliances. Photographs and illustrations were fun and informative.

  • Wordy wade through.
Pretty cover, good idea, however, the style of writing is unnecessarily wordy, which makes it a less enjoyable study than a college text book. There are other books that cover the Hoosier Cabinet from an historical view, but she says she is presenting it as kitchen history. That history can be better presented in a much warmer way, in my opinion. I returned the book because it had something sticky on the back cover, but if it hadn't been for that, I probably would have returned it anyway because it was a heavy read. ... show more

  • If you love your kitchen and love history, read this awesome book!
This is a great history book on the Hoosier cabinet. I just wish it actually had a more comprehensive listing of the possible Hoosier style cabinet of the period. My Hoosier style cabinet is basically Sellers clearfront as far as I am able to discern from one of the ads posted in the book, but mine has components from the Boone and Hoosier brands as well. I'm still confused if indeed it is a Sellers or a hybrid compilation of salvaged pieces. The cabinet hardware closures are unlike any listed in this book which makes finding replacements frustrating. I personally like the hardware, but they appear to be like the Hoosier brand but modified to act as pull releases for the hidden latches. I still would recommend this book for the fascinating history of this kitchen cabinet. Through it, we learn the progression to the modern day kitchen from absolutely nothing at all. It is truly amazing how innovations such as this cabinet lead to the functional kitchens of today. And do check out the antique ads! You can literally see how much of the advertising methods of the day still impact our advertisements today. Truly an awesome compilation. ... show more
