  • Great book to read before and after managing for a while
This book is exactly what I needed and was looking for. There is a lot of great information for those who have never managed before. I think this book would be useful for someone who has been a manager for a while also. It really focuses on what today's managers are going to face. This book really covers a ton of subjects from building trust and confidence to building a dynamic team to writing job description. There are a few chapters I skipped over because the information was not urgent for me right now. I will go back and read through it though. I know I will keep this one as a reference as I work through my first year of so of managing for the first time. ... show more

  • Valuable Information
Many times, new managers, supervisors, and lead-persons are thrown into a leadership position with no idea of how they are supposed to manage. According to The First-Time Manager that is known as the sink or swim approach which makes this book an excellent selection for that newbie manager. Wouldn’t you like to know how to manage people without being that Boss? Come-on, we’ve all had one of those, that Boss in our lifetime. You know the one who never has anything good to say about your work performance and never seems to appreciate how hard you try to please the Boss. Is there more to managing people besides cracking the whip in hopes of getting a couple of extra completed orders out of them? According to Belker, McCormick, and Topchik, there is more to managing people then telling them to move their hands faster than their mouths. Loren B. Belker who is now deceased was an executive for a Midwestern insurance company for 30 some odd years. Gary S. Topchik is a managing partner for SilverStar Enterprises, Inc. which is a consulting firm that specializes in management development. Topchick is also the author of The Accidental Manager and Managing Workplace Negativity. Jim McCormick is not only an author, but he is also a speaker and a professional skydiver that is known for being an expert in intelligent risk-taking and innovation. He is also the founder of The Research Institute for Risk Intelligence. Many leadership topics are covered in this book such as how best to respond to team members appropriately. Don’t be one of those bosses that correct their workers in front of everyone. Take them aside and explain in private without making a show of the incident. You will build more trust with your team members and not hurt department morale. Without spoiling the book, the information found in this book is well worth the read. I did give this book a four-star rating only because some of the information sounded repetitive. However, that may have been the writers’ purpose since much of what is written in this book is helpful to all new managers and even some leads who have been in their position for some time would find this book useful if they want to learn to motivate their workers. If you are looking at becoming a manager, supervisor, or lead-person soon, I highly recommend reading this book. Even if you have been in your position for some time, there is probably at least one chapter that would benefit your leadership role making this book well worth the time and effort for your next book to read. ... show more

  • Practical, inspiring and useful
Absolutely extremely useful! Very practical and realistic. Made me even laugh a few times when I went like, "Jesus, this is exactly what I've been doing!!! And now I see WHY it never actually worked..." It changed quite a few of my views, made me question a few others. Quite insightful. Easy reading. I recommend it, not only to new managers, but also if you are more experienced and is training or looking for new talents who will have a position of manager sooner or later. ... show more

  • Excellent overview for new managers. A must-read
A very simple, yet effective read. Really makes you think about your management style. As a new manager, it provided me a great deal of information that I’ve brought with me to the office every day. Could use a modern “digital” take, but ultimately, managerial skills and the advice provided here stand the test of time. A must-read for all new managers, especially since we don’t necessarily always teach what it means to be a manager. ... show more

  • Good intro to management
Easy read covering a range of more or less relevant areas for a new manager. Not much is highly innovative or surprising in terms of content or lessons, but it's useful and worth absorbing nonetheless.

  • The First-Time Manager
I was recently promoted to manager and thought that this would be a good intro book, to get my head in the game related to managing people. I had already been acting as a lead and my manager had been handing me various items to manage so I was beginning to be prepared for the job full time. First impression: What I have found is that a lot of the information in this book really is just common sense and being a good person. I think that that book is a good resource for getting you thinking in the right direction from the get go, but it is not going to be a good resource long term for any sort of management methods or philosophies. What I think I have learned: It MIGHT be a book I refer back to from time to time just to validate that I am sticking true to "the path of good management", but there will be many more things that I can and will learn from my tenure as a manager, management mentors/colleagues and from other books that I will eventually read. Overall impression of this book: I go believe that this is a good book to have read. It is going to help point me in the right direction. It is going to help me with bringing lots of little details into focus. All of these things I already knew a little bit about... or knew were things that I needed to be aware of. This book just helps to bring them together in a more specific point of view. Conclusion: I will say this. If you have read one or two `new manager' types of books you are probably done. No need to read another. I say this because I am currently also reading "The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days, by Peter Fischer", and so far half way into that book a lot of the information is much the same. I am glad I read this book, because it DOES have good information to help me focus. But I think that maybe I am finding that the book, "The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days, by Peter Fischer"... was a little better fit for me and my needs. If I do read another `new manager' book, it would need to be from another point of view... written for MY manager or my direct reports, or in some way try to be completely different from what I have already been exposed to. ... show more
